Before buying, check its network, hub or Thread needs, and setup requirements. Matter can make cross-platform control easier, but its label alone does not guarantee that every platform supports every device type or feature.
Start with the system your household already uses
List the smart home apps and voice assistants people in your home use, along with any hub or controller already installed. Decide which apps and household members need to control the new device. That gives you a clear target: compatibility with a specific platform and device type, not just a familiar brand.

Check the platform owner’s current compatibility information for the exact model. Google says devices already marked “Works with Google Home” remain supported; its compatible smart home devices list also identifies Matter device types supported by Google Home. Apple advises checking whether an accessory supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter before trying to add it to the Home app. See Apple’s accessory troubleshooting guidance.
A manufacturer’s general claim that a product works with a particular ecosystem is not a substitute for confirming the model and device type in the platform’s current information. If the product listing uses a “Works with” badge, check what the platform’s own listing says about it.

Check the device type and the features you need
Compatibility can depend on what the product does, not just which smart home standard it uses. Confirm that your intended platform supports the device category and the particular controls you care about. Do not assume every feature will appear in every app in the same way; check the manufacturer’s current documentation for the exact model as well.
This matters especially when choosing a Matter device for more than one platform. Matter’s multi-admin capability allows a device to be controlled through multiple Matter-certified apps, but platforms may support device categories at different times. Google explains both points in its Matter setup and control guidance. Confirm support in each app the household plans to use rather than relying on the Matter label alone.
Match the connection to your home network
Read the model’s connection requirements and compare them with your home network before buying. Google describes Matter devices as communicating over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. Amazon notes that most smart home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so a device that needs that band may not connect if your network setup does not provide it. Check the product’s own requirements and your router or network settings.

Google’s Matter guidance covers local communication over Wi-Fi or Thread, while its Matter preparation guidance describes Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread options. For Alexa, see Amazon’s smart home device connection guidance.
Find out whether you need a hub or Thread support
Some devices need a compatible hub or controller; Thread devices may need access to a Thread-capable hub or border router. Check whether a speaker, display, or hub you already own provides the capability required by the exact device. Google notes that some Matter devices need a hub supporting Wi-Fi, Thread, or both. Do not buy another hub until you have checked the device’s requirements and your existing equipment.
For a Matter device, Google recommends checking the Matter logo on the packaging or product site and connecting the relevant hub device to the existing Wi-Fi or Thread network. Its Matter preparation guidance explains these requirements. A Matter-compatible label by itself does not mean that every product needs a separate hub.

Check the setup steps before you commit
Some accessories require extra hardware, a software update, or initial setup in the manufacturer’s app. Confirm whether you will need a manufacturer account, firmware update, or additional equipment, and whether the device can then be controlled in the smart home app your household prefers. Apple recommends checking these requirements when an accessory will not add to the Home app; see its troubleshooting guidance.
