Choose a craft by matching its steps, fine-motor demands, tools, and materials to the child in front of you—not just the age printed on a kit. Around age 8, many children can follow kit directions; from 9 to 12, children are increasingly ready for meticulous, detail-oriented techniques. These are starting points, not milestones every child reaches on schedule.
Start with what the child wants to make
Interest matters: a child who cares about the result is more likely to stick with several steps or practice a new technique. Ask whether they want to make something to use, display, give away, or learn to do. Then check that the project fits their demonstrated skills and the amount of adult help available.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) describes children’s craft interests and abilities by age group in its 2020 Age Determination Guidelines. The guidance is descriptive, not a guarantee that every child of a given age is ready for a particular project.

Around age 8: guided projects and room to experiment
CPSC describes children ages 6–8 as interested in experimenting with art and creating realistic or interesting effects; at about 8, they can follow kit directions. Possible projects include beadwork, simple sewing, miniature looms, collages and scrapbooks, clay or modeling dough, papier-mâché, model-making, watercolor, and simple pottery.

For a first try, look for clear directions, sturdy materials, and parts that are comfortable for the child to grip. Open-ended materials can let the child decide how the finished work looks, even when an adult prepares a difficult step.
Ages 9–12: consider more precise techniques
CPSC says this age group is increasingly capable of detail-oriented techniques and meticulous work. Ideas include calligraphy, sketching, crochet, embroidery, knitting, needlepoint, puppetry, doll making, mosaics, and ceramics. The guidance says children 9 through 12 are “ready for technical training in art, if they wish.” That wording supports offering instruction when a child is interested; it does not mean every child should be expected to master a technique.

CPSC also lists tools such as sewing machines, wood burners, screwdrivers, and pliers. Treat these as higher-supervision options: decide whether the child can use the specific tool safely and whether an adult can prepare or supervise the relevant steps.
Adjust the same idea up or down
A project does not have to be all-or-nothing. Make a first version easier by reducing the number of steps, using larger parts, or having an adult prepare a tricky section. Add challenge by inviting the child to work more independently or handle a more precise step when they are ready. In either case, leave meaningful design choices to the child.

Compare projects before choosing
When several ideas appeal, compare them on the factors below. This is a practical checklist, not an official CPSC scoring system.

| Tools and materials | Does the project involve sharp tools, heat, loose small parts, fumes, or dust? Which steps need adult preparation or direct supervision? |
Choose the option with a manageable level of challenge and a supervision plan that works in practice. A kit’s age recommendation can help inform the decision, but it cannot tell you whether that particular child is interested, ready for its steps, or able to use its tools safely.

Check craft materials and set up safely
For children up to age 12, the CPSC’s Art and Craft Safety Guide advises against products carrying cautionary or warning labels. It also cautions against solvents and solvent-based supplies, self-pressurized containers, corrosives, inhalable dust-producing processes, old or unlabeled materials, heavy metals, and high-temperature hot glue guns. Follow the product directions, provide close supervision, and keep food and drinks out of the art area. Store leftover materials away from children and have them wash their hands after crafting.

HealthyChildren.org, hosted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), recommends choosing water-based supplies over those containing chemical solvents and unscented water-based markers over permanent or dry-erase markers. Look for the statement “conforms to ASTM D4236” and the ACMI Approved Product seal. These labels help you assess art materials, but they do not make misuse safe or guarantee complete safety. Avoid donated or found supplies unless they remain in their original containers with full labeling.

Even a product marked “non-toxic” can be harmful if used in an unintended way. A child’s individual needs also matter: CPSC notes that asthma or allergies may increase sensitivity to fumes, dust, or skin-contact products. Physical, mental, visual, or hearing challenges may affect safe use or hazard recognition, so adapt the setup and support to the child.
Understand age labels and small parts
A kit’s age label is useful information, but it is not a complete assessment of suitability. CPSC considers several factors when determining whether a product is intended primarily for children 12 or younger, including manufacturer intent, marketing, consumer recognition, and age-determination guidance. Craft materials marketed to this age group may be children’s products, and art materials must meet applicable hazardous-material labeling requirements. The label alone does not establish that a project suits a particular child.
Small-parts rules and choking warnings chiefly address hazards to children under 3. If a project uses beads or other loose pieces and younger siblings are nearby, keep the pieces under supervision, pick them up promptly, and store them safely. Follow the package’s age guidance.

Are water-based art supplies always safe?
No. Water-based supplies are generally preferable to products containing chemical solvents, but no label makes a product safe when it is misused. Follow directions, supervise use, and store materials properly.
