Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose a smart display by starting with the smart-home platform and devices you already use, then match its screen, camera, and control features to the room. Amazon Echo Show models suit Alexa households, Google Nest Hub models suit Google Home households, and Echo Hub is aimed more at controlling a smart home than serving as a general-purpose screen. No single model is best for every home, and features vary by model and market.
Start with your smart-home platform
List the voice assistant, smart-home app, devices, and routines your household already depends on. Then check that the exact display model supports the functions you need with those products. An ecosystem match can make everyday controls and routines easier to use; a brand name alone does not guarantee that every feature will work.

- Alexa household: Compare the Echo Show models. Amazon also positions Echo Hub as a dedicated smart-home dashboard.
- Google Home household: Compare the Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max.
- Mixed-platform household: Matter can help compatible devices work across platforms, but check support for the particular device type and feature. Matter does not make every setup flow identical.
Google says Matter-enabled devices communicate locally over an existing home network for Matter commands, rather than requiring cloud routing for those commands. Matter-certified apps including Google Home, Apple Home, and Amazon Alexa can provide cross-platform control. These are standards-level capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature is available on every platform or in every country. See Google’s Matter guidance.
Match screen size to the room and job
Think about where the display will sit or hang, how far away you will view it, and whether it is mainly for quick information or shared household use. A bedside screen and a large wall-mounted calendar are different kinds of purchase.

Sizes and intended uses above come from Amazon’s Echo buying guide and Google’s Nest Hub comparison. Consider counter or desk space, viewing distance, and whether wall mounting is practical before choosing by diagonal measurement alone.
Decide whether you want a camera
A camera can make video calls and camera-based monitoring more useful, but it may not suit every room or household. Google lists a camera on Nest Hub Max and does not list one for Nest Hub (2nd gen). Amazon’s Echo Show models described in its buying guide include cameras; for example, its Echo Show 10 listing specifies a 13-megapixel auto-framing camera.
Rank #2
- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
If video calls or monitoring are priorities, compare the exact model’s camera and calling features. If you do not want a camera in the room, favor a model without one listed and check its physical controls and account settings rather than relying on product-line assumptions.

Check protocols and device compatibility model by model
Smart-home connectivity is not uniform across a brand’s displays. Amazon lists Zigbee, Matter, and Thread support for the Echo Show 8’s built-in hub; do not assume those protocols are included on every Echo Show. Google lists Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max as Matter hubs supporting Wi-Fi and Thread.

- New size, more viewing area: The 11“ smart display features a vibrant Full-HD touchscreen with 60% more viewing area versus Echo Show 8 (2025 release), built-in smart home hub, AZ3 Pro chip for powerful performance, and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Content looks and sounds incredible: Watch shows on Prime Video, Netflix, and more on the vibrant Full-HD 11" screen and enjoy room-filling spatial audio, crisper vocals, wider sound stage, and up to 2x bass versus Echo Show 8 (2023 release). - Your everyday assistant: The 11" display makes it easy to see recipes and calendars at a glance, find meal inspo, and manage your shopping lists. With Alexa+, find recipes based on foods you love, make reservations, order groceries, and more.
- Simple Smart Home control: Pair and control thousands of devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. Easily view your camera feeds. Manage lights, thermostats, and more using the display or your voice. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature, presence, or visual ID detection.
- Crystal-clear video calls: Video calls feel natural on the vibrant 11" screen with a centered, auto-framing camera, 3.3x zoom, and noise reduction technology. Use live view to check in on your family, pets, and more while you're away.
A Matter hub may be needed to add devices and provide local or remote control. Google also says IPv6 must be enabled on the home wireless network for Matter to work properly. Before buying, check the current compatibility information for both the display and each device type you plan to use, and confirm that your router supports IPv6 if you intend to use Matter. Matter support is not proof that every product feature, device category, or setup path works everywhere.
Compare entertainment, audio, and household features
Consider the services your household actually uses and whether the display’s speakers and screen fit the way you listen or watch. Vendor feature lists describe supported uses, not comparative performance tests.

Check the current service and feature list for your region before buying. The manufacturer descriptions do not establish which display has better sound, screen quality, responsiveness, or reliability in everyday use.

Choose a dashboard-first device only if control is the priority
Echo Hub is positioned as a smart-home controller rather than simply a larger Echo Show. Amazon describes controls organized by room or function, routines, live camera feeds—including viewing up to four streams at once—audio control, and photo display. The buying guide describes built-in hub connectivity, wall-mounting options, and an optional tabletop stand. Amazon also describes a microphone-off button and controls for deleting voice recordings on its Echo Hub feature page.

Choose this kind of dashboard if convenient access to devices and camera feeds matters more than a general-purpose entertainment screen. Check current software status, included hardware, protocol compatibility, and local availability because those details can change.
Review privacy controls before placing a display
Decide whether a camera and microphone belong in the intended room, then inspect the device’s physical controls and the account settings for camera, microphone, and voice history. Google says its connected-home privacy commitments apply to listed devices and services when used with Google Accounts; Amazon describes privacy controls for Echo Hub. These vendor statements do not amount to an independent comparison of security or privacy between products.
Verify price, availability, and the exact generation
Prices, stock, warranty terms, included accessories, and supported features vary by country and can change. The product specifications cited here do not establish a current price comparison or local availability. Check the manufacturer or retailer listing for the exact model and generation in your market before purchase.
Quick Recap
A practical shortlist
- Choose an Echo Show model if Alexa is already central to your household; narrow it by room, camera needs, screen size, and the exact protocols you need.
- Choose between Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max if your home uses Google Home; the Max is larger and has a camera, while the 2nd gen is smaller and has no camera listed in Google’s comparison.
- Consider Echo Hub when a dedicated, mounted or tabletop smart-home dashboard is the main goal, rather than a conventional media-first display.
