VictoriaLogs is logs-focused and offers a single-binary quick start plus Loki JSON API ingestion; OpenObserve combines logs, metrics, and traces and documents migration from Grafana LGTM. Loki may still be the better fit if its label-first search model and your existing Grafana setup suit the way your team investigates incidents. These are architecture choices, not benchmark winners: test them against representative marketplace logs before deciding.
What matters when searching marketplace application logs?
A marketplace investigation may start with a service, environment, or region and then narrow to a particular order, customer, request, or trace. Those fields do not have the same search-design implications. In Loki, labels identify log streams; the system indexes those labels rather than the full text of each log line. Queries use labels to select streams, then examine the log contents.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction makes cardinality important. Service, environment, region, and—in deployments where it is useful—cluster or namespace are reasonable candidates for an initial, bounded label set. Order IDs, customer IDs, request IDs, and trace IDs can have many distinct values. Making such unbounded values labels can multiply streams and create large indexes, small chunks, and degraded performance. Grafana’s Loki documentation states: “Loki was not designed or built to support high cardinality label values.”
Keep high-cardinality identifiers searchable without making them labels
For fields such as order ID or trace ID, consider structured metadata or query-time parsing instead of indexing each value as a label. Structured metadata is intended for high-cardinality fields that need to remain searchable without multiplying indexed streams. Parsed fields can also help with ad hoc investigations. Validate the choice against the actual queries investigators run and the behavior observed at your expected volume; a field’s usefulness to search does not automatically make it a good label.

What does “signal before storage” mean?
It is a pipeline design choice: normalize, filter, redact, or route telemetry before it is persisted. A collector or processor handles that pipeline work; it is not itself the log database. The OpenTelemetry Collector is a vendor-agnostic receiver, processor, and exporter. Vector documents log aggregation, transformation, and routing capabilities.
Decide what the pipeline should do
For a marketplace service, possible pipeline policies include normalizing field names across services, redacting secrets or personal data, dropping noisy low-value events, and routing audit or security records under distinct retention controls. These are design options, not defaults guaranteed by a collector. Define the policy with the teams responsible for application behavior and data handling, then validate each transform so it does not remove fields needed for incident response or audit.

Separate collection from persistence
Collectors move and transform telemetry; the selected backend stores and queries it. Decide which component owns each transformation and routing rule, and test the complete path from application output to investigator query. That makes it easier to distinguish an ingestion or transformation problem from a backend query or storage problem.
Which self-hosted backends should you evaluate?
The relevant choice depends on whether you want a logs-focused system, a broader observability platform, or continuity with an existing Loki and Grafana workflow.

| Option | Documented scope | Why evaluate it | Questions for a trial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grafana Loki | Label-indexed log aggregation, LogQL, and object-store or local storage | Your Grafana investment and low-cardinality labels already fit your workflow | Can common investigations start with selective labels? How do structured metadata and retention behave at expected volume? |
| VictoriaLogs | Logs-focused database; single-binary quick start; multiple collectors and ingestion APIs, including the Loki JSON API | You want a self-hosted logs backend with a simple initial deployment or Loki ingestion compatibility | Does its query language suit investigators? What are the resource, retention, backup, and cluster requirements at your workload scale? |
| OpenObserve | Unified logs, metrics, and traces; SQL and PromQL; local or Kubernetes deployment; multiple ingestion methods | You want several observability signal types in one platform or a documented migration route from Grafana LGTM | Does a unified platform simplify operations? How do query workflows, access control, storage, and migration behave in a representative trial? |
When a logs-focused alternative is the more natural test
VictoriaLogs is a candidate if the immediate requirement is log storage and search rather than a unified logs, metrics, and traces platform. Its documented single-binary quick start can simplify an initial self-hosted evaluation, and its Loki JSON API support may be relevant where existing ingestion uses that API. Compatibility with an ingestion API does not by itself establish that queries, operational procedures, or every migration requirement will transfer unchanged.
When a unified platform is worth testing
OpenObserve is a candidate if consolidating logs, metrics, and traces is an explicit goal. Its documentation describes SQL and PromQL, local and Kubernetes deployment, multiple ingestion methods, and a migration route from Grafana LGTM. Whether that breadth reduces operational effort—or adds capabilities the team does not need—is a workload and team-fit question to test.

When staying with Loki makes sense
Loki remains plausible when the team already uses Grafana, understands LogQL, and can begin investigations with selective, low-cardinality labels. Its label-first design is not a general-purpose index of every log-line field, so a workload that depends on frequent broad searches over arbitrary text or identifiers should be evaluated carefully rather than assumed to fit.

- Query ergonomics and field discovery: Can an investigator move from service and time range to order, request, or trace details without awkward parsing or label design?
- Ingestion and collector fit: Do the formats and APIs used by your applications and collectors reach the backend as expected? Confirm which transformations occur before storage.
- Volume and cardinality: Replay representative logs and query patterns. Observe ingestion, resource use, and query behavior under expected workload conditions.
- Retention and storage: Determine how retention is configured, what storage is required, and how the chosen retention policy affects the data investigators can access.
- Operations and availability: Assess deployment, scaling, maintenance, backup, recovery, and high-availability requirements for the topology you would actually run.
- Security and access control: Verify authentication, authorization, network exposure, and how sensitive fields are handled throughout collection and storage.
- Migration effort: Test ingestion compatibility, query rewrites, dashboards, and operational changes; do not infer full migration compatibility from support for one API.
- Signal scope: Decide whether combining logs, metrics, and traces addresses a real operational need or whether a logs-focused backend is sufficient.
Interpret vendor performance claims cautiously
VictoriaMetrics says VictoriaLogs performs typical full-text search queries up to 1000 times faster than Grafana Loki, and that VictoriaLogs usually needs less RAM and storage for the same log volume. These are vendor-published comparisons; the cited FAQ page does not establish an independently verified result here, and the speed figure should not be treated as a prediction for your workload. The comparison’s methodology was not independently verified or reproduced. Make performance or cost claims only after a controlled trial using your own representative data, ingestion volume, retention settings, and repeated investigation queries.

Self-hosting makes the operating team responsible for availability, scaling, maintenance, storage, access control, and retention. Treat a quick start as a way to evaluate software, not as proof that a production topology will meet durability or recovery requirements.
Storage and deployment
Loki stores compressed log chunks in object storage such as Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage, or on a local filesystem. Its storage documentation recommends TSDB as the persistence mode. A local installation can be useful for a trial, but production storage, retention, durability, recovery, and topology need to be assessed against expected ingestion and query loads.
Loki’s quick-start documentation says Simple Scalable Deployment mode is deprecated and scheduled for removal in Loki 4.0. Do not treat that quick-start topology as a durable production recommendation; consult the current deployment-mode documentation when implementing.
Authentication and sensitive logs
Grafana’s local-install guidance says Loki does not include an authentication layer. Its services should not be exposed without an authenticating reverse proxy in front of them to prevent unauthorized access. Apply access controls and redaction deliberately, keep sensitive values out of logs where possible, and set retention rules according to your organization’s data-handling policy.
Quick Recap
A practical evaluation sequence
- Inventory the data: Collect representative application logs and identify routine search fields, high-cardinality identifiers, sensitive values, and events that may need distinct retention.
- Define pipeline policy: Specify field normalization, redaction, filtering, and routing before storage. Test transforms against application and incident-response requirements.
- Choose a label and field strategy: For Loki, start with bounded labels such as service, environment, and region where useful. Keep unbounded identifiers out of labels unless workload evidence supports a bounded use; test structured metadata or query-time parsing for them.
- Run the same trial tasks: Feed each candidate representative records and repeat the same common investigations, including searches by marketplace identifiers. Record query results, operational steps, and resource behavior under the trial conditions.
- Test production obligations: Verify access controls, retention, storage, backup and recovery, scaling, and availability for the intended deployment rather than relying on quick-start behavior.
- Make a workload-specific decision: Choose on measured fit for your own ingestion, searches, and operations. Documentation establishes relevant capabilities, but it does not establish a universal performance or cost winner.
