How to Choose a Screen for an Ultra-Short-Throw Projector

A UST projector needs a screen matched to its steep light path. Check UST compatibility, orientation, room fit, gain, viewing coverage, and installation before buying.

For most tabletop ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors, choose a screen explicitly designed for UST projection—usually labeled CLR (ceiling light rejecting) or UST ALR—and confirm that the exact model supports your projector’s orientation. “ALR” alone does not guarantee compatibility: a screen built for a different light path can reject the projector’s own image.

1. Confirm the projector’s throw geometry

Start with the projector’s manual or official specifications. Find its throw ratio, supported image-size range, placement chart, and installation guidance. Legrand AV describes UST projection as a throw ratio of 0.4:1 or less, but use the projector maker’s own specifications when classifying a particular model or a borderline case. Check the screen against the projector’s actual installation: tabletop or ceiling-mounted, and the height and angle from which its light reaches the screen. A product label that says “ALR” is not enough; look for explicit UST compatibility and placement instructions.

2. Match the screen’s optics to the projector and room

UST projectors send light toward the screen at a steep upward angle. UST-specific CLR or UST ALR surfaces are designed around that light path and can reduce the effect of ambient light arriving from particular directions, especially overhead. Standard-throw ALR screens use different directional behavior and may reject the UST projector’s beam. Terminology varies by manufacturer, so rely on the exact model’s specifications and manual rather than the label alone. Elite Screens’ CLR 2 guidance and XGIMI’s screen guide discuss these distinctions.

Check top and bottom orientation

Directional material is not necessarily reversible. Elite Screens says its CLR, CLR 2, and CLR 3 fabrics are oriented to reject light from above and accept light from a tabletop projector. Reversing such a surface for a ceiling-mounted projector can reflect overhead light and fail to direct the projector’s light toward the viewing area. Its Aeon CLR user guide says the material is exclusively for table-mounted UST projectors and warns that overhead or standard-throw placement can make the image very dark. Optoma’s ALR101e datasheet also specifies tabletop or desktop orientation and says ceiling mounting is unsupported. These are model-specific limits, not a universal rule for every UST screen. Elite Screens’ CLR 2 guidance, the Aeon CLR user guide, and Optoma’s ALR101e datasheet

3. Choose a size and aspect ratio that fit both projector and room

Use the projector’s placement chart to confirm that it can produce the screen’s diagonal from your planned position. Then check the screen’s visible image dimensions against the wall, furniture, ceiling height, and seated eye line. A screen can be within the projector’s range and still be too large for a comfortable or practical installation.

Legrand AV suggests room depth divided by two as a sizing rule of thumb and provides a sizing worksheet; treat that as a starting point rather than a universal standard. The Optoma ALR101e is a particular 16:9 screen with a 100.25-inch diagonal, not a recommended size for every room. Legrand AV’s sizing guidance and Optoma’s ALR101e datasheet

4. Balance gain against seating coverage

Gain describes a screen’s relative reflectivity. Higher gain can make the image brighter near the center while narrowing the useful viewing cone; a lower-gain screen may appear dimmer when viewed straight on. Compare the published gain and horizontal and vertical viewing or half-gain angles with the positions of everyone who will watch. A bright center seat is not enough if the image loses brightness or uniformity for viewers at the sides.

As one product-specific example, Elite Screens lists 0.9 gain and a 160-degree viewing angle for a 103-inch, 16:9 Light-On CLR 2 configuration. Those are the manufacturer’s specifications for that configuration, not a controlled comparison with screens from other brands. Elite Screens Light-On CLR 2. For an explanation of gain and viewing angles, see Legrand AV’s ALR guide.

5. Pick a format that can stay flat

A rigid fixed frame is a straightforward option when the wall can accommodate it. Screenline describes its UST CLR product as using a rigid aluminum frame and a serrated optical surface designed for UST projection. Screenline CLR UST

For a retractable or flexible screen, check the exact model’s documentation for its tensioning system, flatness guidance, and explicit UST compatibility. UST’s steep projection angle can make surface unevenness more noticeable, so do not assume that a screen suitable for ordinary projection will perform equally well with a UST projector. 6. Understand what ambient-light rejection can and cannot do

Directional rejection can improve perceived contrast when the screen’s optical design matches the direction of the projector and the room’s light sources. It does not make every bright room equivalent to a dark theater: direct light and reflections from walls, ceilings, or other surfaces can still affect the picture. Pay attention to the directions specified for rejection, not just a headline percentage.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative measurements or a promise of the same result in every room. Optoma ALR101e datasheet

Compare candidate screens before buying

What to compare What to verify
UST compatibility Is the material explicitly specified for UST, and which projector angles and orientations does it support?
Ambient-light direction Which directions does the material reject, and from which direction will projector light and room light arrive?
Size and format Diagonal, aspect ratio, visible image dimensions, projector throw-chart fit, and wall fit.
Gain and viewing cone Published gain and horizontal and vertical viewing or half-gain angles, checked against actual seating positions.
Surface and format Whether the frame is rigid or the screen is tensioned, and how the design maintains a flat surface.
Installation Correct top/bottom orientation, wall support, and approval for tabletop or ceiling mounting.
Evidence quality Whether figures are manufacturer claims or independent controlled tests; specifications from different brands are not automatically comparable.

Before ordering, confirm the projector model, intended orientation, supported image size, aspect ratio, screen gain, viewing angle, and installation requirements against the specific screen’s documentation.
