Choose the competition or learning program first, then choose a kit that fits its current rules, students, and full season budget. A box that looks suitable can still be the wrong purchase if it is not legal for the team’s league, lacks required game materials, or cannot support the number of students building and coding.
Start with the team’s purpose and program
If students plan to compete, identify the exact league and season before comparing kits. Each program sets its own rules and may require season-specific game materials. Read the current official manual and check for updates before buying; do not assume last season’s parts or compatibility guidance still applies.

For VEX IQ, the current competition page identifies the 2026–2027 game as Level Up and links to its manual and season game kit. VEX says the game manual is the official rules source and may be updated during the season, so verify the latest version and component legality before buying add-ons. For FIRST LEGO League, first establish which edition and age or grade band applies. FIRST’s current page distinguishes the SPIKE-based Founders Edition from the kit-based BIOGLOW Future Edition, which uses Computer Science & AI kits. It says LEGO Education SPIKE Prime and Essential products are available through LEGO Education until June 30, 2026; as of October 2026, teams should check the applicable edition and current storefront rather than assume those products are available for a new purchase. For FIRST Tech Challenge, consult the materials for the team’s actual season. FIRST’s linked DECODE page covers the 2025–2026 season and illustrates how manuals and updates are versioned; it does not establish requirements for a later season. FIRST Tech Challenge game and season materials
Match the kit to students and team size
Choose for the students who will use the kit, not only for the most experienced builder. Consider grade level, prior building and programming experience, how independently students can assemble and troubleshoot, and how much time the instructor can devote to teaching and maintenance.

- Students per robot: Decide how many students will share each kit. A single robot can limit hands-on time if a large group must take turns building or coding.
- Room to prototype: Check whether the parts support multiple designs or parallel builds, not just one finished robot.
- Build complexity: Snap-together construction may make early builds accessible; more expansive mechanical systems can offer additional design choices but may demand more assembly and troubleshooting.
- Practical setup: Account for storage, charging, the computers or tablets students will use, and the instructor’s capacity to organize and maintain parts.
Compare the kind of kit to the work it needs to do
Classroom kits commonly emphasize curriculum and approachable first builds. Competition kits may emphasize structural choices and mechanisms that let students adapt a robot to a game. These are different priorities, not a universal ranking: the right choice depends on the program, students, and learning goals.
VEX IQ
VEX lists an IQ Education Kit for classroom learning and a Competition Kit intended for one competition team. VEX V5
VEX distinguishes V5 Classroom Kits, designed around school curriculum, from V5 Competition Kits intended for middle-school, high-school, and college-level competition. VEX says competition kits include aluminum structural pieces and additional specialty parts that expand drivetrain and manipulator options. Its Classroom Starter Kit page describes uses including mechanical advantage, programming, and iterative design. V5 may merit comparison when the team’s age, design ambitions, and competition route call for a broader mechanical system, but kit choice does not replace checking that competition’s rules. FIRST LEGO League
FIRST’s listed Future Edition estimates illustrate how a program package can combine hardware and registration. On the current U.S. page, the Grade 3–5 option for eight students is estimated at $1,300 and includes registration, two Computer Science & AI kits, one 3–5 Hardware Bundle, and one BIOGLOW Annual Set. The 24-student option is listed at $4,400 and includes a classroom bundle, three hardware bundles, and one annual set. FIRST says local event fees are collected separately. These are estimates for the specified options, not universal prices or a complete local season budget. FIRST LEGO League package details

Calculate the full season cost
Do not compare options using the advertised kit price alone. Make a team budget that separates the initial purchase from recurring or season-specific expenses, and confirm which items are included in the package.
- Kit and required season game or field materials
- Team registration and local event fees
- Computers, tablets, or other programming devices
- Batteries, chargers, replacement parts, and shipping
- Tools, storage, transport, and any additional practice materials
Ask the program organizer which items are mandatory, which can be shared or borrowed, and which costs recur each season. Prices, regional eligibility, kit contents, and requirements can change, so verify them close to purchase.

Check software, learning support, and upkeep
A suitable kit is a system, not just a parts box. Confirm that its programming tools work with the devices available to the team and match the students’ intended coding level. Check whether curriculum or lesson resources are included, how replacement parts can be obtained, and whether the team has a plan for labeling, storing, charging, and inventorying the equipment.
Also ask whether the hardware is likely to be useful in future seasons. Reuse can improve value, but it is not a reason to assume that a robot or add-on will remain legal in a particular competition. Rules and game materials must still be checked for each season.
Quick Recap
A practical selection checklist
- Name the destination: Write down the competition, season, or classroom learning goal the kit must serve.
- Verify requirements: Read the current official rules or program page, including required season materials and updates.
- Size the team: Decide how many students will share each robot and whether the kit supports meaningful participation and prototyping.
- Check the whole setup: Confirm parts, motors, sensors, software, curriculum, compatible devices, storage, and charging needs.
- Build the season budget: Add registration, events, game materials, devices, spares, and other costs not included in the kit.
- Choose for next steps: Prefer a system students and instructors can maintain and learn with, while treating future-season compatibility as something to verify—not a guarantee.
