Samsung documents its Wallet and UPI service for compatible Samsung devices, and describes UPI onboarding on Galaxy smartphones. That is the official support boundary; it does not establish whether unofficial workarounds can work.
What Samsung’s compatibility guidance means
Samsung’s India service information describes Samsung Pay as a service for a compatible Samsung mobile device, while its current Samsung Wallet page directs users to check device compatibility. The page may mention downloading the app, but app availability alone does not mean a non-Samsung phone is supported. Samsung does not document other Android brands as eligible for Samsung Wallet UPI.

The names can be confusing: Samsung Wallet is the broader brand, with Samsung Pay integrated as its payment sub-brand. Some UPI instructions are still titled Samsung Pay, even though the service is now presented under Samsung Wallet. A Samsung Galaxy label by itself does not guarantee that Wallet or UPI is available. Samsung says Wallet features can vary by country or region, model, carrier, and firmware. Check compatibility for your exact device and confirm that UPI appears in the Wallet app; the reviewed Samsung materials do not provide a current model-by-model India UPI list.

Samsung’s October 30, 2025 announcement describes UPI onboarding integrated into device setup on Galaxy smartphones, with rollout across supported Galaxy devices. - Open Samsung Pay or Samsung Wallet and choose UPI.
- Create a UPI profile and choose a preferred VPA (Virtual Payment Address).
- Select the bank and account to link. The mobile number used during setup must match the number registered with that bank account.
- Follow the bank verification prompts and set a UPI PIN. Samsung’s instructions say debit or ATM card details may be requested to generate the PIN.
Samsung’s page also describes linking additional bank accounts, sending money to a VPA or a bank account number with IFSC, paying online with a VPA, and scanning BHIM UPI QR codes in stores. Payments are authorized with the UPI PIN. These are flows listed in Samsung’s instructions, not a guarantee that every option or screen is unchanged in every version. See Samsung’s UPI instructions.
What to do if you do not have a Samsung phone
- Want Samsung Wallet specifically? Use a compatible Galaxy device, after verifying that Wallet UPI is supported for its model and configuration in India. Consider the cost and inconvenience of changing phones before buying one; the available guidance does not identify a model that can be guaranteed to work for every buyer.
- Just need to make UPI payments? Samsung hardware is not established as a general requirement for UPI. Choose a UPI app that supports your phone and bank; that would be separate from Samsung Wallet.
Wallet installation and setup notes
Samsung’s general setup support page says Wallet may come preinstalled on supported devices and recommends checking for software updates if it is missing. It also describes signing in to a Samsung Account, setting device verification, and creating a four-digit Wallet PIN. That page was last updated January 31, 2023, so treat its screen-by-screen directions as dated rather than a guarantee of current menus. See Samsung’s Wallet setup support page.
