Choose a robot mower by measuring your lawn and comparing it with the exact model’s area, slope, boundary, navigation, and setup limits—not by relying on one headline capacity or slope figure. On a difficult site, narrow routes, separate lawn zones, obstacles, wet grass, and weak satellite reception can matter as much as the mower’s maximum rating.
Start with a site survey, not a model shortlist
Measure the grass the mower will actually maintain, leaving out beds and other non-grass sections. Then map the features that affect coverage and safe movement:

- Area: total mowable lawn, including each separate section.
- Slopes: steepest sections within the lawn and near each boundary; record them separately.
- Routes: narrow passages, gates, turns, hard paths between lawn sections, and the route back to the charging point.
- Obstacles and edges: trees, buildings, overhangs, garden features, no-go areas, drop-offs, and road edges.
- Navigation conditions: places where trees or buildings may obstruct satellite signals, and possible locations for an antenna or reference station.
For slope, measure vertical rise and horizontal distance. Husqvarna defines the calculation as slope (%) = vertical height ÷ horizontal distance × 100. A 15 cm rise over 100 cm horizontally is a 15% slope. Percentage is not the same as degrees. Husqvarna’s slope guidance gives the formula and measurement example.

Compare the specifications that determine fit
Check the manufacturer’s page or manual for the exact model and market. Record the rated lawn area, maximum slope inside the work area, maximum slope at the boundary, navigation method, passage limits, zone support, and installation requirements. The same mower can have different limits in different parts of the lawn.

| What to compare | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn capacity | Your measured mowable area and the exact model’s rated area | A complex layout can make coverage harder than the area alone suggests. EGO advises choosing a model rated above the actual lawn area and factoring in slopes, narrow passages, zones, and obstacles. |
| Work-area slope | Maximum incline allowed while mowing inside the perimeter | This rating may be higher than the permitted incline at an edge. |
| Boundary slope | Maximum incline allowed at the perimeter or virtual boundary | A mower may manage an incline within the lawn but be unsuitable where it meets an edge. |
| Navigation and coverage | Boundary wire, RTK-GNSS, vision, or a combined system; any station or antenna requirement | Buildings, trees, signal conditions, and boundary setup can affect whether a system suits the site. |
| Zones and transitions | Supported zones, passage width, connecting paths, and charging return route | Separate grass sections need a workable route or a supported way to connect them. |
| Surface and obstacles | Uneven ground, wet areas, slopes with turns, drop-offs, and road edges | Turns and reduced traction can increase slipping or boundary risk. |
| Setup and support | Mapping method, connectivity needs, installation, and available dealer help | Complex edges or uncertain transitions can make setup more involved. |
Read slope ratings as model-specific limits
Husqvarna’s UK support guidance says standard Automower models vary by model, and its table separates the maximum slope in the work area from the maximum at the boundary. For example, it lists the 435X AWD and 435X AWD NERA at up to 70% in the work area and 50% at the boundary. It lists the 320 NERA, 430X NERA, and 450X NERA at 50% and 25%, respectively, and the 305E NERA, 310E NERA, 405XE NERA, and 410XE NERA at 30% and 20%. These are manufacturer ratings for the named models, not a general limit for all robot mowers. See Husqvarna’s model table and installation guidance.
The difference is also clear in ECOVACS’ US specification for the GOAT O1000 RTK: up to 45% in the work area, but 17% at its virtual boundary. Compare both figures with your measurements. Do not assume a high work-area rating means the mower can approach a steep lawn edge. ECOVACS lists the O1000 RTK specifications here.

Account for traction, turns, and edge conditions
A published maximum is not a promise that the mower will perform on every surface or in wet conditions. Husqvarna notes that steep slopes, turning around obstacles, and wet conditions can increase slipping risk. Its guidance says to exclude areas beyond the specific mower’s limit, move a boundary onto flatter ground when an outer edge is too steep, or isolate an over-limit section. It also discusses straight or diagonal mowing routes for some installations; follow the model-specific installation instructions rather than improvising a route.
For a slope bordering a public road, Husqvarna’s guidance recommends a protective barrier, such as a wall or fence, at least 15 cm high along the outer edge. Treat this as manufacturer installation advice and check local requirements. It is not a substitute for local rules or a site-specific safety assessment.

Check whether the navigation system fits your yard
“Wire-free” does not describe one universal navigation method. Systems may depend on satellite positioning, a reference station, cameras, or a combination. Confirm how the exact model maps boundaries and connects separate zones, and whether trees or buildings could interfere with its positioning.
- Husqvarna 550H EPOS: the US product page describes RTK-GNSS virtual boundaries with accuracy down to approximately 2 cm and requires an on-site EPOS reference station. It also describes virtual transport paths between work areas across non-mowing zones. These are claims for this commercial model, not a general feature of wire-free mowers. See the 550H EPOS product details.
- EGO AURA-R2: EGO Europe describes the 1,500 m² model as using PATH IQ with RTK and VSLAM, with a listed gradient limit of up to 50% and mapping for up to 40 zones. EGO says its system combines RTK with vision to help where satellite signals are weak or blocked. Its page also says unclear lawn edges require manual control throughout the mapping process. These are product-page statements, not independent test results. Read EGO’s AURA-R2 specifications and setup guidance.
- ECOVACS GOAT O1000 RTK: ECOVACS lists RTK, a camera, and 3D ToF as its navigation combination. Its stated ability to pass through a 0.7 m narrow passage is based on ECOVACS laboratory results; the company says real results can vary with grass, lawn size, terrain, and environment. Check the O1000 RTK page for the qualification.
- Dreame A2: Dreame lists 3,000 m² mowing capacity and a 50% maximum slope. It says automatic boundary setup applies only when lawn boundaries are clear; complex gardens with unclear boundaries require manual control throughout mapping. The company labels some performance data as in-house laboratory data and says actual performance may vary. See Dreame’s A2 specifications and setup details.
These published figures help narrow a shortlist; they do not establish how a mower will perform on your particular ground. Treat each rating as a claim for that model and stated conditions, and check the full installation guidance.

Allow for the layout, not just total area
A large, open lawn may be simpler to cover than a smaller property split by paths, gates, or narrow connectors. Check whether the mower can reach every zone, cross the route between them, and return to charge. Where a product gives a passage-width figure, verify its conditions: ECOVACS’ 0.7 m figure, for example, is explicitly tied to laboratory results and may vary in real yards.
For area capacity, use the exact model’s rating as a starting point and leave room for site complexity. EGO’s guidance is to select a model rated above the actual lawn area and also consider the steepest slope, narrow passages, multiple zones, and obstacles. A capacity number on its own does not tell you whether the mower can navigate your property’s transitions or finish coverage under your site conditions.
Decide whether you need help with setup
Ask a dealer or installer for a site survey if you are unsure about slope measurements, boundary placement, signal coverage, or transitions between zones. EGO recommends dealer support for uncertain setups and says that mapping unclear lawn edges on the cited AURA-R2 requires manual control for the full mapping process. A survey can clarify whether the layout is suitable and where boundaries or connecting paths should go before you commit to an installation.
Quick Recap
- Measure the mowable area, slopes, passages, and transitions.
- Compare the site with the exact model’s area rating and separate work-area and boundary slope limits.
- Confirm navigation requirements, zone support, passage constraints, and charging route.
- Exclude or isolate areas that exceed the model’s stated limits, and review edge conditions such as slopes near roads.
- Get model-specific installation advice if mapping, connectivity, or boundary placement remains uncertain.
