There is no universally best rideshare app for drivers. The better choice is the platform that produces stronger net earnings for your hours and business miles in your city, while fitting your vehicle, insurance, schedule, and preferred working conditions. Compare Uber and Lyft using your local terms and your own records—not an advertised hourly figure or one bonus.
Which rideshare app pays drivers more?
That depends on where and when you drive, which trips you receive, your vehicle’s costs, and how much unpaid time you spend waiting or repositioning. Uber and Lyft disclosures explain their own policies, but they do not establish which one pays drivers more in every market. A platform fee or a California pay guarantee is not the same as take-home income.

Compare gross payouts after platform fees, tips, and incentives you can realistically earn, then subtract your operating costs. Divide the result by all time spent working, not just time with a passenger in the car. Include online waiting, driving to pickups, trips, and repositioning or returning to a useful area.

How to compare earnings after expenses
Use comparable shifts on each eligible platform. Keep the same accounting rules for time, miles, and expenses so one app does not look better simply because you counted its work differently.

- Choose comparable shifts. Drive at similar times and in similar areas, and record any conditions that make the sessions unlike one another.
- Log total work time and business miles. Include waiting online, pickup driving, passenger trips, and repositioning. Uber’s tax guide says its online mileage summary includes waiting, pickup, and on-trip mileage: Uber tax information and tax summary.
- Record payouts. Track fares, tips, platform deductions, and incentives separately. Count a bonus only if you can meet its conditions without taking trips that are uneconomic for you.
- Subtract costs. Include fuel or charging, insurance, tires, maintenance and repairs, inspections, tolls and fees, and vehicle depreciation or lease payments. Uber’s tax guide lists several vehicle-expense recordkeeping categories, including fuel, insurance, repairs, maintenance, registration, and depreciation or lease payments.
- Calculate both useful rates. Divide net earnings by all work time for net per total hour, and by business miles for net per business mile. Review the underlying totals as well as the averages.
Tax deductions are not the same as cash costs or profit. Uber’s guide describes standard-mileage and actual-expense methods; its 72.5-cent-per-mile figure is specifically for tax year 2025 and should not be treated as the 2026 rate. Check the current IRS rate and applicable tax guidance for the year you file.
What platform fees and pay rules actually tell you
Lyft says its monthly platform fee cap took effect May 1, 2026: if Lyft’s fee exceeds 30% of passenger payments for rides in a given month, it says it will pay an adjustment. Lyft also describes its fee as averaging about 14%. Those are Lyft’s figures and definition, not an independent comparison of driver net earnings. Lyft says external insurance, tax, and government fees are excluded from its platform-fee definition. Read the company’s announcement for the scope and terms: Lyft’s fee-cap announcement.

Lyft’s driver help page describes a California-specific guarantee of at least 120% of applicable minimum wage for booked time, plus 37 cents per booked mile. It is not a national rate or a promise of net earnings; the page’s California context and applicable rules matter. Check the current local terms rather than applying this example to another state: Lyft California driver information.

Before comparing earnings, confirm that you can actually drive on each platform with your license, vehicle, documents, and location. Requirements and eligible ride categories can differ by state, city, vehicle class, and service tier. Check the local driver pages for age, screening, vehicle age, inspection, and documentation requirements, then verify which ride types your car can receive.

Lyft says rates can vary by market and subregion, pickup location, ride type, vehicle, and real-time conditions. That means a vehicle’s eligibility for a category may affect both the trips available and the rates you see. Compare insurance by state and trip phase
Rideshare insurance is not one blanket policy. Uber says it maintains insurance for rideshare activity, while drivers must keep legally required personal coverage. Its physical-damage coverage for an accepted trip depends on the driver having personal comprehensive and collision coverage, and the Uber page specifies a deductible. Coverage and terms depend on the state and the phase of the trip; read the applicable certificate and ask your personal insurer how your policy treats rideshare use. Compare the work experience, not only the fare
App features can affect whether a platform suits the way you work, but availability varies. Compare the trip information shown before accepting, demand tools, safety workflows, support, payout timing, and how easily you can go online when you choose. Lyft’s annual filing describes its own upfront-pay, demand-information, safety, and support features; Uber also describes app and trip-detail features that vary by market. Company descriptions are not a neutral measure of which app works better in a particular city.

If your car does not have a compatible in-car app integration, a secure phone mount can make navigation easier to use without holding the phone. Uber’s Driver App Basics guidance says: “If your vehicle doesn’t have an app integration, consider using a phone mount to help you navigate safely on the road.” Uber says compatible vehicles may use Android Auto, CarPlay, or Tesla integration, but availability varies by market. Lyft’s Texas guidance says phones should be mounted while driving on that platform; check the applicable local rules. Can you drive for both Uber and Lyft?
Whether you can sign up for both depends on meeting each platform’s current local requirements. If you are eligible, compare them with separate records for each app and use the same time-and-cost method. Avoid counting the same waiting period as work for both platforms when calculating per-hour results, and account for any period when being available on one app prevents you from accepting work on the other.
Make the decision with your own local results
- Choose the platform with the better net result per total work hour and per business mile across comparable shifts—not merely the higher gross fare or advertised rate.
- Weigh earnings against vehicle wear, insurance terms, schedule flexibility, trip information, support, and the ride categories your vehicle can serve.
- Recheck local pay terms, fees, eligibility rules, and insurance documents when policies change; these details can vary by location and over time.
The UC Berkeley Labor Center’s IRLE report analyzes driver-pay methodology in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Portland, emphasizing the importance of waiting time, expenses, and worker benefits in evaluating pay. It is a regional analysis, not a universal measurement of every driver’s working time or earnings. The report also discusses another analysis in which time waiting for ride offers could range from 15–30% of total working time; that figure should be read in that context, not assumed for your own shifts.
