Choose a replacement body control module (BCM) by confirming the exact part for your vehicle’s VIN—not by appearance, connector shape, or a broad make-and-model match. Before buying, also confirm the module’s programming and setup requirements, because a replacement may need flash programming, vehicle configuration, or security/key coding after installation.
What a body control module does
A BCM is an electronic control unit that monitors and controls vehicle body systems and coordinates with other body component modules. Its precise functions vary by vehicle. That variation is one reason a BCM that looks right or fits physically may still be wrong for your application.

How to identify the right replacement BCM
- Start with the vehicle identification number (VIN). Ask the automaker’s parts catalog or a dealer parts desk to confirm the service part for your exact vehicle and configuration.
- Record the installed module’s complete part number if accessible. Give it to the parts professional along with the VIN, and ask them to verify the current service number and any supersession. A number by itself does not prove fitment.
- Confirm the catalog application before ordering. Check any listed model-year, trim, or configuration qualifiers. Catalog examples for one vehicle family are not universal fitment references.
- Verify programming and setup needs for that exact part and vehicle. Ask whether flash programming, VIN or configuration setup, or security/key coding is required, and who can perform it.
- Compare the exact listing’s condition and terms. Check whether the part is new or remanufactured, plus its warranty, labor coverage, core charge, and return conditions.
GM’s parts FAQ answers whether its BCMs are interchangeable: “No, so be sure to have the correct BCM for your application.” See the GM Genuine Parts BCM catalog listing. Do not infer interchangeability from a matching housing or connector.
What to compare between candidate modules
| Decision point | What to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle application | VIN-level catalog fitment and any exact trim or configuration qualifiers | BCMs are not universally interchangeable, and a catalog example covers only its stated applications. |
| Part identity | Complete number on the installed module, if available, and the current service number or supersession confirmed by the parts source | A look-alike part or a number from another vehicle does not establish fitment. |
| Programming and setup | Whether flash programming, VIN/configuration setup, or security/key coding is required—and who can do it | A physically compatible module may not operate correctly until the specified procedure is completed. |
| Part condition | New OEM or remanufactured, as stated on the exact listing | Condition, availability, and terms are specific to the supplier and listing. |
| Warranty and returns | Parts coverage, labor conditions, core charge, and return rules | Terms on one listing do not apply automatically to another module or seller. |
Does a replacement BCM need programming?
It may. The two GM catalog examples below are both labeled as requiring programming; one specifies flash programming. Requirements depend on the exact module and vehicle, so confirm the service procedure before purchase rather than assuming the part is ready to install.
#1 Best Overall
- This part requires programming and/or special setup procedures. GM Service Information or equivalent describes the procedures and special tools needed to ensure proper operation in the vehicle
- Dictates the operation of your vehicle’s vital systems, which is critical to the performance of your vehicle
- GM recommended replacement part for your GM vehicle’s original factory component
- Manufactured to GM OE specification for fit, form, and function
- Manufactured to meet or exceed strict quality requirements
Some configurations also require additional coding. An NHTSA-hosted service bulletin says the configurations in its table must receive VIN, PROXI, and key coding after replacement, and directs readers to the applicable manual. Those instructions apply to the bulletin’s listed configurations, not to every make or model. Consult the BCM replacement bulletin and the vehicle’s service information for the exact procedure.
New OEM versus remanufactured: catalog examples
| Catalog example | Condition and application shown | Programming and stated terms |
|---|---|---|
| GM Genuine Parts 13568206 | New genuine part; GM lists specified Blazer EV, Colorado, Equinox, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV model years. | Labeled “Programming Required.” |
| ACDelco Gold 19473699 | Remanufactured part; catalog application is the 2005–2006 Chevrolet Colorado. | Requires flash programming. The listing states a 24-month/unlimited-mile limited parts warranty, with labor covered when installed by a GM dealer. |
These are examples of how catalog listings can disclose application and programming—not recommendations for vehicles whose VIN has not been checked. Warranty and labor terms shown for the remanufactured example belong to that listing and may not apply to other parts.
Rank #2
- Remanufacturing is an industry standard practice that returns parts into service rather than scrapping them
- Tested to ensure they perform to GM specifications
- Helps keep vehicle electrical body components functioning properly
- Coordinates different operations with various vehicle body component modules
- Some ACDelco Gold parts may have formerly appeared as ACDelco Professional
Can you use a used or salvage BCM?
Do not assume a used BCM can be reset, reprogrammed, or reused in another vehicle. Whether that is possible depends on the exact vehicle and module; the available manufacturer and bulletin information does not establish a general rule across vehicle families. Before buying one, ask the vehicle-specific parts or service source to confirm compatibility, security requirements, and whether the required programming procedure supports that module.

A BCM replacement is not established as the right repair for any particular symptom without vehicle-specific diagnosis. Have the vehicle diagnosed first, then verify the replacement against its service information. GM’s catalog advises consulting the owner’s manual or an expert technician and says trained-professional repair is preferable. Programming and security steps may make professional service necessary for the exact application.
