How to Choose a Race and Class in WoW: Forever

Choose your faction and ruleset first, then match a class you want to play repeatedly with a compatible race. See the announced WoW: Forever options and how to weigh racial traits amid beta changes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose your faction and ruleset first if you plan to play with friends; then pick a class for the role and everyday play pattern you want, and choose a compatible race from Blizzard’s current matrix. Racial traits can add useful situational abilities, but the announced information does not establish a universally best race/class pairing or a reliable damage ranking. Because WoW: Forever is in beta, verify availability and ability descriptions in the current character-creation screen before committing.

Start with the choice that can restrict the rest: friends, faction, and ruleset

A race and class are not the only decisions that affect where and with whom you can play. If joining friends is important, settle the faction and ruleset they plan to use before settling on a character concept. Horde and Alliance remain separate for grouping, and characters in different rulesets cannot group for dungeons or raids. A pairing that looks ideal on paper is not useful for your group if it puts you on the wrong side of one of those boundaries.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Know what the ruleset allows

  • PvP: A player can create characters for only one faction. Coordinate the faction before making a character.
  • Normal and Roleplaying: Players can create characters for both factions, but Horde and Alliance still remain separate for grouping.
  • Different rulesets: Characters in different rulesets cannot group for dungeons or raids.
  • Hardcore: Blizzard has said this ruleset is planned for sometime after launch. Its availability and timing are not established as a current launch option.

These constraints are more consequential than a small difference in racial utility if your main goal is to level or run group content with particular people. Check Blizzard’s current ruleset information and character-creation options for the status that applies when you play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of these as two separate checks: matching a faction does not by itself resolve a ruleset mismatch, and choosing a ruleset that permits both factions does not make Horde and Alliance characters group together. Ask your friends which ruleset they intend to use and which faction they plan to play, then write both down before looking at race/class combinations. If you expect to play alone, you have more room to choose based on class feel and character concept, but the ruleset still determines the environment you are entering.

Pick a class by the play you want to repeat

Ask what you want most of your ordinary play sessions to involve. Are you primarily interested in solo leveling, healing, tanking, ranged damage, or being able to switch between roles? These are useful decision prompts, not a promise that every class can perform every role equally or that a particular class is strongest. The available evidence does not supply a verified class-strength ranking.

Use a practical preference test

  1. Choose your main activity. Name the role or activity you expect to do most often, rather than the one that sounds exciting only at a distant endgame level.
  2. Decide whether flexibility matters. If you want to move between roles, make that a real selection criterion. If you would rather focus on one kind of play, say so.
  3. Think about the ordinary loop. Consider the spells, decisions, and pace you will encounter repeatedly while leveling, not just a late talent or a hypothetical level-60 build.
  4. Try it when beta access permits. Play within the current beta level range and note the build or version. A short test can help you judge whether the basic loop appeals to you, but it cannot establish level-60 balance.

Do not let a prediction about future balance substitute for a preference you can already describe. Beta abilities can change, and a current impression may not survive later updates. If you test more than one class, compare them under the same approximate conditions and keep your notes tied to the version you played.

If you are unsure how to answer the role question, make it concrete rather than trying to guess what you will want months later. Do you want your character to spend most of the time dealing damage, support other players, take a tanking role, or have the option to change direction? The decision prompt is about the experience you hope to repeat, not a claim that the article can assign every class a fixed role or rank. Once you have a preference, use the matrix to see which races leave that class available.

A class-first approach is usually the simplest when the repeated play pattern matters most: choose the class experience you want, then filter the compatible races. A race-first approach can also make sense when a particular character identity or faction is non-negotiable. In that case, look only at that race’s listed classes and decide among them by the same everyday-play test. Either order works as long as the social constraints and actual compatibility are checked rather than assumed.

Use the official matrix to find races that can play your class

Blizzard’s announced race/class matrix lists nine classes: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior. Class access is restricted by race and, for the new Skyborne, by faction-specific path. The table below transcribes the announced options; an entry in the available-classes column means the combination is listed as available.

Faction or path Race Available classes
Horde Orc Hunter, Mage, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior
Horde Tauren Druid, Hunter, Shaman, Warrior
Horde Troll Hunter, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior
Horde Undead Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior
Horde Windshaper Skyborne Druid, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Warrior
Alliance Dwarf Hunter, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warrior
Alliance Gnome Mage, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior
Alliance Human Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior
Alliance Night Elf Druid, Hunter, Priest, Rogue, Warrior
Alliance High-Order Skyborne Druid, Hunter, Mage, Rogue, Warrior

What the new options change

Six pairings newly available to classic races expand the set beyond their previous restrictions: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin. If one of these is the character you have wanted to play, check that the current creation screen still offers it rather than relying on older guides written for a different version.

Skyborne are not one shared class list. Horde-aligned Windshapers and Alliance-aligned High-Order Skyborne have separate paths and different access. Both paths include additional classes beyond the headline combinations of Windshaper Shaman and High-Order Mage. Use the relevant row in the matrix instead of assuming that every Skyborne character can select the same classes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The matrix is a compatibility guide, not a performance tier list. It tells you which announced combinations exist; it does not show which class deals the most damage, is easiest to level, or will be most valuable at endgame.

Use the table in whichever direction matches your starting point. If you already know the class you want, scan the rows and keep only races that list it; if you are attached to a race, scan its row and compare only its available classes. For example, someone set on an Alliance Shaman can see that Dwarf is listed as an option, while a player set on Horde Paladin can see Undead listed. These examples confirm availability in the announced matrix; they do not imply a strength advantage, a preferred build, or that all other character considerations are settled.

The new combinations are worth checking particularly carefully against older guides. A guide written before the announced additions may omit Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, or Undead Paladin because those pairings were not available in the prior class restrictions. The reverse caution applies too: do not assume that every old option or every beta detail is unchanged simply because a familiar race and class appear together in an older reference. The current matrix and creation screen are the practical checks for the build you are playing.

Compare compatible races by useful traits, not a universal ranking

Once the class and faction are fixed, compare the races still available to you. Ask whether a racial trait is useful in the situations you expect to encounter, and whether you value that utility enough to prefer it over another compatible option. A racial ability can be meaningful without making its race the best choice for every class, activity, or player.

Race and trait Stated effect How to interpret it
Human — Will to Survive Removes stuns Utility for situations in which removing a stun matters; it is not a general damage comparison.
Orc — Hardiness Reduces stun durations A different kind of stun-related benefit from removing a stun outright.
Dwarf — Stoneform Grants immunity to bleeds, poisons, and diseases while reducing physical damage taken Several defensive effects are described, but their practical value depends on the encounter and current implementation.
Night Elf — Shadowmeld Grants stealth while immobile A situational stealth effect with the stated immobility condition.

These examples illustrate different forms of utility rather than a settled ordering. Blizzard’s published material does not provide comparative performance data that would justify calling one pairing universally superior. Trait details are also volatile during beta, so read the in-game tooltip for the current version rather than assuming an older description still applies.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

When comparing two compatible options, ask a narrower question than “Which trait is best?” For example: does the stated effect address a situation you care about, and do you value that kind of utility enough to let it decide between otherwise appealing characters? Will to Survive removes stuns, while Hardiness reduces stun durations; those descriptions are not identical, so avoid treating them as interchangeable. Stoneform lists multiple defensive effects, and Shadowmeld’s stated condition is being immobile. The official descriptions support those distinctions, but not a universal calculation of how often each will matter.

Do not overread a tooltip into a promise about how often an ability will be useful, how it will interact with every encounter, or how much it changes performance. The trait list gives effects, not a comparative dataset. If a racial ability is your deciding factor, verify its current wording in-game and be comfortable with the fact that the value you assign to it depends on your own likely situations and the beta implementation.

  1. Write down the social constraint. Record the faction and ruleset that match your friends or intended group.
  2. Name the class experience you want. Pick the role or ordinary play pattern that sounds enjoyable over repeated sessions.
  3. Filter the matrix. Cross out races that cannot play that class on the faction/path you need.
  4. Compare traits you will actually value. Use current tooltip descriptions and consider the kinds of situations where each effect matters to you.
  5. Test uncertain class feel. If beta access is available, try the basic loop and record the version. Treat this as a feel check, not proof of endgame strength.
  6. Choose the option you will enjoy playing. If two options remain close, appearance, character identity, or simple personal preference can reasonably break the tie; the available evidence does not establish that you must optimize for a ranking.

A useful comparison worksheet

Question What to record
Can I play with my intended group? Ruleset, faction, and any grouping limitation that applies
Can this race play my class? The exact row from the current official matrix or creation screen
Will I enjoy the routine? The activity or role I want to repeat, plus what I learned from a beta trial if available
Does the racial trait matter to me? The tooltip effect and the kind of situation where I expect to use it
How much uncertainty can I accept? Whether I am choosing for current beta feel or willing to revisit the choice as details change

A useful shortlist should be small enough to compare, not a full ranking of every possible pairing. Start with your group’s faction and ruleset, filter the matrix for classes you would enjoy, and keep two or three compatible candidates if more than one remains. Then compare the basic play loop and racial utility using the same questions for each candidate. If one option fails a hard requirement, such as being in the right faction for your group, remove it rather than trying to compensate with a trait you like.

You can also separate “must-haves” from “tie-breakers.” Group compatibility and whether the combination exists are hard checks. A preferred role or class loop is a major preference. A particular racial trait, character appearance, or concept can distinguish close candidates. Making that separation prevents a minor preference from obscuring a restriction that would keep you from joining the intended group.

Understand what beta can—and cannot—tell you

WoW: Forever is in beta, so announced access, abilities, and balance can change. Independent guidance on the current choice recommends checking the basic spell and play loop within the beta’s available level range and recording the build/version tested. That is useful for answering “Do I enjoy playing this?” It is not sufficient evidence for “Will this be strongest at level 60?” or for a lasting endgame ranking.

Blizzard’s matrix is the authority for announced compatibility, while current in-game descriptions are the practical check on what a trait says in the build you are playing. Before relying on a detail, verify the current official notes and character-creation screen. If they disagree with an older guide or a remembered tooltip, use the current implementation and note the version or date when making your decision.

On October 10, 2026, TechRadar reported an interview with the WoW: Forever team and described Blizzard’s design aim as “to err on the side of simpler classes, but with engaging depth.” That is a reported design direction, not a guarantee that every class will suit every player or a substitute for trying the current beta build.

As of October 13, 2026, the important practical point is not to treat a beta recommendation as permanent. If class abilities, racial descriptions, or class access change, redo the relevant checks rather than assuming a ranking or a guide written for an earlier build still applies. Keep the scope of any test clear: the level range and build you tried can tell you how that version felt to you, but they do not answer questions about later levels or launch balance.

The design aim reported by TechRadar can help set expectations about the direction of class design, but it is not a class-by-class specification. The phrase “simpler classes, but with engaging depth” does not tell you which class will be easiest, most complex, or strongest. Treat it as context, then make your choice from the concrete information available to you: compatibility, group constraints, current descriptions, and whether the routine feels appealing.

What the available information does not prove

  • It does not establish a universal best race/class combination.
  • It does not provide popularity rates, damage rankings, or comparative endgame performance statistics.
  • It does not show that a short beta trial predicts level-60 balance.
  • It does not make a Skyborne class list interchangeable between Windshaper and High-Order paths.

Those limits do not make the choice arbitrary. They mean the reliable decision inputs are compatibility, group constraints, the play you want to repeat, and the current wording of racial abilities—not a purported definitive ranking unsupported by the announced information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A final check before creating the character

  • Confirm that your chosen ruleset and faction fit the group you want to join.
  • Check that the exact race/class pairing appears in the current matrix or character-creation screen.
  • Read the current racial tooltip, especially if your choice depends on a specific effect.
  • If you tested a beta build, remember that the trial reflects that level range and version, not necessarily launch balance or level 60.

If the checks pass and you are still undecided, choose the combination whose class loop and character identity you are most looking forward to. There is no supported reason to delay for a speculative universal ranking. Revisit the choice only if a concrete fact changes, such as the current class access, a ruleset constraint, or the wording of an ability you rely on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose my race or class first in WoW: Forever?

If the class play pattern matters most, choose the class first and use Blizzard’s matrix to filter compatible races. If a particular race or faction is non-negotiable, start there and compare only the classes listed for it. In either case, settle faction and ruleset constraints first if you plan to play with friends.

What is the best race/class combination in WoW: Forever?

The announced information does not establish a universal best pairing or a reliable damage ranking. Use the matrix to confirm compatibility, then weigh your preferred class loop, group constraints, and the racial utility you personally value.

Can I play a new race/class combination such as Dwarf Shaman or Human Hunter?

Blizzard’s announced matrix includes six newly available classic-race pairings: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin. Because the game is in beta, confirm the exact option on the current character-creation screen.

Are the Skyborne class options the same for both factions?

No. Windshaper Skyborne are Horde-aligned and High-Order Skyborne are Alliance-aligned, with separate class lists. Check the row for the specific path rather than assuming all Skyborne share access.

Can I group with friends if we choose different factions or rulesets?

Horde and Alliance remain separate for grouping, and characters in different rulesets cannot group for dungeons or raids. On PvP, a player can create characters for only one faction; Normal and Roleplaying allow characters of both factions, but that does not remove the faction grouping divide.

Does a beta trial tell me which class will be strongest at level 60?

No. Trying the ordinary spells and play loop within the current beta level range can help you decide whether the class feels enjoyable, but a short test cannot establish level-60 balance. Record the build or version and check current notes and in-game descriptions as beta details change.

When is Hardcore available?

Blizzard has said Hardcore is planned for sometime after launch. Its exact timing and current availability should be checked in Blizzard’s latest ruleset information.

The Bottom Line

Choose the faction and ruleset that let you play with your intended group, pick a class for the play you want to repeat, and use Blizzard’s matrix to find compatible races. Compare current racial traits as situational utility—not proof of a universal winner—and recheck beta access and descriptions in the current creation screen.
