DeWalt FLEXVOLT vs. Standard 20V MAX Batteries: Compatibility, Runtime, and Cost

FLEXVOLT packs share compatible DEWALT 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, but runtime multipliers use a specific 1.5Ah baseline and current value depends on dated, like-for-like prices.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: DEWALT FLEXVOLT batteries are built to work with compatible DEWALT 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, automatically changing voltage when moved between those platforms. The DCB612 product page also lists 120V MAX tools. A conventional 20V MAX battery should not be assumed to run a 60V MAX tool; verify the exact tool manual. FLEXVOLT runtime claims are model-specific comparisons against DEWALT’s small DCB201 1.5Ah pack, not a guarantee that every FLEXVOLT battery lasts four or six times longer than every standard 20V MAX battery. Current price data is not established by the manufacturer pages reviewed, so value depends on dated prices, capacity, kit contents and your tool mix.

What the FLEXVOLT difference actually is

FLEXVOLT is DEWALT’s battery design for sharing one pack family across compatible voltage platforms. DEWALT says a FLEXVOLT pack automatically changes voltage when the tool detects the platform for which it is designed. That lets one battery serve a compatible 20V MAX tool and a compatible 60V MAX tool, rather than requiring separate battery families for each platform. The DCB612 page additionally identifies compatibility with 120V MAX tools.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The voltage names need a qualification. DEWALT defines its “MAX” voltage as the maximum initial voltage measured without a workload; nominal operating voltages are lower. Therefore, “20V MAX” and “60V MAX” are product-platform labels, not a promise that a pack continuously delivers those exact voltages under load.

Compatibility is directional

The official material establishes that FLEXVOLT batteries can be used in listed DEWALT 20V MAX, 60V MAX and, for specified packs, 120V MAX tools. It does not establish reverse compatibility for ordinary 20V MAX packs in 60V MAX or 120V MAX tools. Do not treat the two labels as interchangeable simply because a FLEXVOLT battery can serve both.

Read the battery model’s compatibility notes and the exact tool manual before connecting a pack. Tool generations, regional product numbers and charger models can differ, and a platform name alone is not a substitute for the manual’s compatibility list.

Compatibility at a glance

Battery or tool situation What the DEWALT material supports What to do
FLEXVOLT pack in a compatible 20V MAX tool Supported; the pack switches to the tool’s 20V MAX operating mode. Confirm the exact battery model and tool manual.
FLEXVOLT pack in a compatible 60V MAX tool Supported; the pack switches for the 60V MAX platform. Use only tools that identify that battery as compatible.
FLEXVOLT pack in a listed 120V MAX tool The DCB612 page lists 120V MAX compatibility, normally using two packs in the tool. Check the tool and pack documentation for the required number of batteries.
Standard 20V MAX pack in a 20V MAX tool This is the normal use case for the 20V MAX pack family. Check the tool’s approved battery list.
Standard 20V MAX pack in a 60V MAX tool Reverse compatibility is not established by the cited DEWALT pages. Do not assume it works; use the tool manual and an approved pack.
Any battery in a charger DEWALT’s DCB118 manual says the charger accepts 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs. Verify that your charger is the same model or consult its current manual.

How FLEXVOLT automatic voltage switching works

One pack, different platform modes

A FLEXVOLT pack contains the switching and cell arrangement needed to present the voltage expected by the connected tool. In a compatible 20V MAX tool, it operates as a 20V MAX battery; in a compatible 60V MAX tool, it operates in the higher-voltage configuration. The user does not manually select a voltage.

That switching is the central advantage for owners who use both platforms. You can move the pack between listed tools without buying a separate high-voltage battery and a separate low-voltage battery for every job. It does not make every DEWALT battery universal: compatibility still depends on the exact tool, pack and charger models.

Why the tool manual matters

Product families contain packs with different capacities and tool generations. A platform page can describe a family-level feature while a particular saw, grinder or outdoor-power tool has additional requirements. Treat the tool’s manual and the battery’s product page as the final authority, especially for 60V MAX and 120V MAX equipment.

Runtime: what DEWALT’s numbers mean

DEWALT publishes runtime multipliers for particular FLEXVOLT models. Those figures are useful only when their reference pack and test context remain attached to the number.

Battery model Claim on the DEWALT product page Reference and qualification
DCB606, 6Ah FLEXVOLT 4× runtime Compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah battery pack when used in DEWALT 20V MAX tools.
DCB609, 9Ah FLEXVOLT Up to 6× runtime Compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah battery pack; the page identifies use in DEWALT 20V MAX tools.
DCB612, 12Ah FLEXVOLT Up to 6× runtime Compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah battery pack in DEWALT 20V MAX tools.
DCB609, 9Ah FLEXVOLT 180Wh per pack DEWALT says two packs provide 360Wh combined in its 120V MAX tools.

These are manufacturer claims, not independent laboratory results. “Four times” does not mean a DCB606 lasts four times as long as every standard 20V MAX battery. “Up to six times” does not mean a DCB609 or DCB612 will achieve that result in every tool, material or workload. The cited pages compare named models, and their footnotes identify the DCB201 1.5Ah pack as the baseline.

Why real runtime varies

  • Tool demand: A high-draw saw or grinder can consume energy much faster than a drill performing light fastening.
  • Workload: Cutting dense material, drilling large holes and sustained outdoor-power use generally place more demand on a pack than intermittent light work.
  • Battery condition: Age, temperature and charge state affect available energy.
  • Control behavior: A tool that cycles on and off can produce a different elapsed-time result from one operated continuously.
  • Platform mode: The same FLEXVOLT pack is operating in a different voltage configuration in a 20V MAX tool than in a 60V MAX tool.

Because those variables are not standardized in the product-page claims, converting a multiplier into a guaranteed number of working hours would be misleading.

Amp-hours, watt-hours and the capacity lineup

What amp-hours tell you

Amp-hours describe charge capacity at a stated voltage and test condition; they are not a universal clock. A higher Ah rating generally indicates more stored energy within the same battery family, but the tool’s power draw determines how quickly that energy is used. You cannot promise “X hours” from an Ah figure without specifying the tool, load and test method.

FLEXVOLT capacities identified by DEWALT

Capacity named in the material What is established How to interpret it
6Ah Represented by the DCB606 product page. DEWALT claims 4× runtime versus DCB201 1.5Ah in 20V MAX tools.
9Ah Represented by the DCB609 product page. DEWALT claims up to 6× versus DCB201 1.5Ah; the page states 180Wh per pack.
12Ah Represented by the DCB612 product page. DEWALT claims up to 6× versus DCB201 1.5Ah and lists 20V MAX, 60V MAX and 120V MAX compatibility.
15Ah DEWALT lists a 15Ah FLEXVOLT capacity. The supplied product information does not attach a specific model or multiplier to this capacity.

Using watt-hours for cross-platform context

Watt-hours combine voltage and amp-hours into an energy figure, which is more useful than Ah alone when comparing different voltage platforms. DEWALT lists the DCB609 at 180Wh per pack and says two packs total 360Wh in its 120V MAX tools. That does not predict exact runtime: efficiency, load and tool controls still determine how quickly the stored energy becomes useful work.

Charger compatibility and a safe verification process

The DCB612 product page says it works with all 20V MAX chargers. DEWALT’s DCB118 charger manual says that charger accepts 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs. The manual is model-specific and older than some current products, so do not generalize its statement to an unidentified charger.

Check a battery, tool and charger before buying

  1. Write down the complete battery model, such as DCB606, DCB609 or DCB612, rather than relying on the Ah number alone.
  2. Read the tool label and manual for its platform: 20V MAX, 60V MAX or 120V MAX.
  3. Look for the battery models explicitly listed as compatible with that tool.
  4. Read the charger label and its current manual. Confirm that it accepts the battery chemistry and pack family.
  5. Check whether the tool requires one FLEXVOLT pack or two packs for its rated operation.
  6. If any document conflicts with a retailer listing or a generic platform statement, follow the tool and charger documentation.

FLEXVOLT versus standard 20V MAX: practical trade-offs

Decision factor FLEXVOLT Standard 20V MAX
Platform flexibility Designed to serve compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, with specified packs also supporting 120V MAX tools. Designed around the 20V MAX platform; higher-voltage compatibility must be verified and should not be assumed.
Runtime evidence DEWALT publishes model-specific comparisons: 4× for DCB606 and up to 6× for DCB609 and DCB612, each against DCB201 1.5Ah. No like-for-like runtime figure is established here because the comparison depends on the exact pack model and tool.
Capacity options named 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah and 15Ah are identified. The cited material names the DCB201 1.5Ah pack as a comparison baseline but does not provide a complete standard-pack lineup.
Charger use DCB612 is stated to work with all 20V MAX chargers; DCB118 documentation accepts FLEXVOLT packs. Use a charger approved for the exact 20V MAX pack.
Cost evidence No current comparable price is supplied by the reviewed manufacturer pages. No current comparable price is supplied by the reviewed manufacturer pages.

The table shows why “better” has no universal answer. FLEXVOLT’s distinct benefit is cross-platform sharing plus the higher-capacity models and their manufacturer-stated comparisons. Standard 20V MAX packs can be the simpler choice when all of your tools are 20V MAX and your workload does not justify a larger pack. A price premium cannot be judged without matching, dated prices.

How to compare cost without creating a false winner

The official pages reviewed provide specifications and promotional runtime claims, but not a current, equivalent price list for standard 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT packs. Any claim that one option is cheaper, or that a particular pack reaches a break-even point, would require market data collected for the reader’s country on a stated date.

Use an equivalent comparison

  1. Record market and date: Note the country, retailer and date because battery prices and promotions change.
  2. Match battery count: Compare one pack with one pack, or a two-pack kit with a two-pack kit.
  3. Match capacity as closely as possible: State the Ah or Wh for every pack instead of comparing a small standard pack with a large FLEXVOLT pack and calling the result a technology premium.
  4. Separate kit contents: A bare battery is not equivalent to a kit containing a charger or tool. Assign a value to each included item or compare bare batteries only.
  5. Check warranty terms: Include the applicable warranty conditions and region when they differ between products.
  6. Calculate only what the data supports: You can report price per pack, price per Ah or price per Wh, but do not convert those figures into guaranteed cost per hour unless you have a defined runtime test.

What the premium might buy

A FLEXVOLT buyer may be paying for more than stored energy. The pack can potentially be shared between compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, and selected models are listed for 120V MAX equipment. That flexibility has practical value if you already own, or plan to add, tools on more than one platform. If every tool you own is 20V MAX, the decision rests more heavily on the specific runtime claim, pack weight and current price.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Which battery type fits common ownership patterns?

You own only 20V MAX tools

Start by comparing the exact standard pack and FLEXVOLT model approved for your tools. A FLEXVOLT pack may provide a higher capacity or a manufacturer-stated runtime advantage, but the DCB606, DCB609 and DCB612 claims all use the DCB201 1.5Ah pack as their reference. Do not assume the same multiplier against the standard battery already in your toolbox.

You own both 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools

Cross-platform sharing is the strongest factual case for FLEXVOLT. One compatible pack family can move between the two listed platforms, reducing the need to maintain separate batteries for each. Verify each tool individually; the platform benefit does not override model-specific restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You use 120V MAX equipment

Check the exact pack and tool requirements. The DCB612 page lists 120V MAX compatibility, while the DCB609 page states that two 180Wh packs provide 360Wh combined in DEWALT 120V MAX tools. Do not infer that every FLEXVOLT capacity or every 120V MAX tool uses the same arrangement.

You value the lowest upfront spend

Collect current local prices before deciding. Since the supplied manufacturer pages do not establish comparable prices, neither a FLEXVOLT premium nor a standard-pack saving can be stated reliably here. Include chargers and tools in the comparison only when both options include equivalent items.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Reading “20V/60V” as universal compatibility: The label describes the FLEXVOLT pack’s supported platforms, not every DEWALT battery.
  • Quoting a multiplier without its baseline: Always name DCB201 1.5Ah when citing the 4× or up-to-6× figures.
  • Treating “up to” as a guaranteed result: The DCB609 and DCB612 figures are upper-limit manufacturer claims, not a promise for every task.
  • Using Ah as hours: Amp-hours require voltage, tool demand and test conditions before they can be related to elapsed runtime.
  • Comparing unlike kits: A bare battery, a charger bundle and a tool kit have different values.
  • Relying on an old charger reference for every model: The DCB118 manual supports that charger’s stated compatibility; confirm documentation for your own charger.
  • Assuming a retailer title is a technical specification: Confirm model numbers and the manufacturer’s compatibility notes.

Is a FLEXVOLT battery worth the extra cost?

It can be, when you will use the same pack in compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, need the capacity of a model such as the DCB606, DCB609 or DCB612, or have a 120V MAX application covered by the specific pack documentation. It may not be, when all your tools are 20V MAX, a smaller pack already meets your workload and the FLEXVOLT price premium is substantial.

The evidence supports a conditional decision, not a universal value winner. Verify compatibility first, compare the named capacity and runtime baseline second, and use same-date local prices and equivalent kit contents before deciding whether the flexibility is worth paying for.
