The right projector for a mid-size sanctuary depends on the screen, room light, seating, and mounting position—not on a universal lumen target. Measure those conditions first, then compare brightness, resolution, lens options, and connections. Epson’s guidance likewise ties brightness to room size, display size, and ambient light, and warns that excessive brightness can overwhelm a smaller space (Epson’s faith-based projector guidance).
What should you measure before choosing?
Record the room and installation details before shopping. “Mid-size” alone does not tell you whether a projector can fill the screen from the available mounting position or remain readable with the sanctuary lights on.

- Screen: Measure its width and height, and note the image format you plan to use.
- Room lighting: Consider how much ambient light remains during worship and presentations.
- Viewing: Identify the farthest seats and whether the audience views the screen from off-center positions.
- Mounting geometry: Measure the available projector-to-screen distance and note where the projector can be mounted.
- Content: Decide whether the usual material is mostly lyrics and text, or also video and detailed imagery.
- Signal route: List source devices, connections, and cable distances; a long run may require an appropriate transport solution.
Epson’s throw-distance simulator documentation uses room dimensions, screen size, mounting position, throw distance, and ambient conditions as inputs. Use the throw-distance simulator manual to guide the calculation, or have an installer survey the space.
How many lumens do you need?
There is no evidence-based universal lumen minimum for every mid-size church. Epson’s guidance says brightness selection depends on room size, display size, and the light present during use; too much brightness can overwhelm a smaller space. Its guidance also notes that higher ambient light or a larger screen can make resolution and color light output more important, depending on where the audience sits (Epson).

Compare the projector’s stated color brightness and white brightness, not just a generic brightness label. Then judge those figures against your measurements and expected lighting. Manufacturer specifications can describe a model’s output, but they do not prove that the same output is necessary—or sufficient—for every sanctuary.
Which projector features matter for church presentations?
Resolution for lyrics, slides, and video
Check native resolution against your content and screen. Text-heavy slides need legible lettering at the farthest seats; frequent video and detailed imagery place greater emphasis on resolution and color reproduction. Higher ambient light or a larger screen can increase the importance of resolution and color output, but audience position also matters.

Lens and placement flexibility
Match the throw ratio or compatible lens to the measured distance and screen width. Lens shift can help when the projector cannot be mounted directly on the screen axis. In difficult rooms, interchangeable lens options and professional installation may make a workable placement possible where a fixed lens would not.

Confirm that the projector accepts the sources your team uses and that the chosen cable route can carry the signal reliably. For long cable runs, select an appropriate transport approach rather than assuming an ordinary cable will solve every distance. Also consider mounting access, alignment, and who will handle service.

How do the Epson large-venue examples compare?
These models illustrate different large-venue configurations; neither is a universal recommendation for a mid-size sanctuary. The brightness and lens figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of church projector needs. Confirm current model status, availability, and total system cost before deciding.
| Model | Resolution and light source | Color and white brightness | Lens and installation details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epson Pro L1100U | WUXGA; laser | 6,000 lumens each, per Epson’s product specifications accessed in 2026 | HDBaseT; optional powered lenses with lens shift and memory |
| Epson Pro G7905U | WUXGA; lamp | 7,000 lumens each, per Epson’s product specifications accessed in 2026 | Standard-lens throw ratio 1.44–2.32; HDBaseT; optional interchangeable lenses with powered shift and memory |
The L1100U is an example of a laser projector Epson positions for large venues such as auditoriums and sanctuaries. The G7905U has a different light source and lens configuration. Because the G7905U uses a lamp rather than the L1100U’s laser, compare current documentation on operating and maintenance implications; include the required lens in any total-cost calculation.

When should you involve an AV installer?
Consider a local church AV integrator if the projector must fit a difficult throw distance, avoid obstructions, serve off-axis seating, or connect across a long cable route. Ask for a room survey and a written scope that covers screen fit, throw calculation, mounting, alignment, signal transport, and service terms. A site-specific assessment is more useful than choosing a projector from the phrase “mid-size sanctuary” alone.
