How to Choose a Portable Power Station for Storm Outages

Match a station's continuous and surge output to your appliances and its watt-hour capacity to the time you need them. Then plan safe connections and recharging.

Choose a portable power station by checking two things against the appliances you actually need: its continuous and surge output must handle their power draw, and its capacity in watt-hours (Wh) must cover the time you want to run them. Make a prioritized list, starting with medical equipment and communications, then refrigeration and lighting. Estimate the loads and plan how you will recharge the station if the outage lasts longer than its stored energy.

Start with the loads you cannot afford to lose

List the devices you expect to power, their wattage, and how many hours you need each one. Put essential medical devices and communications first, followed by refrigeration and lighting; treat other appliances as optional. Check appliance labels or manuals, and use a watt meter where practical. A label gives a useful starting point, but a motor or compressor may need a brief burst of extra power when it starts.

Decide which devices must run simultaneously. Add their running watts to estimate the continuous load, then account for the startup demand of devices with motors or compressors. The station’s continuous AC rating must cover the simultaneous running load, and its surge capability must be sufficient for startup. A station with ample stored energy can still fail to start an appliance if its inverter cannot supply that momentary demand.

Size capacity for the time you need

Watts (W) describe power at a moment; watt-hours describe stored energy. Energizer’s lithium-battery guidance gives the conversion Wh = volts (V) × amp-hours (Ah). To estimate an appliance’s energy use, multiply its watts by the hours it runs: watts × hours = watt-hours.

  • WHAT YOU GET: 1* Jackery Explorer 300 Portable Power Station, 1*AC adapter, 1* car charger cable, 1* user guide (𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐝.)
  1. Estimate each device’s energy. Multiply its expected wattage by the hours it will operate. For a refrigerator or other cycling appliance, use measured average consumption if available instead of assuming it draws its nameplate watts continuously.
  2. Add the devices you plan to use. Include only the loads in your actual outage plan, and distinguish devices that run continuously from those used intermittently.
  3. Leave room for losses and uncertainty. Inverter conversion uses some energy, and real appliance use may differ from an estimate. Do not assume every watt-hour printed on a station’s specification becomes usable AC energy.
  4. Compare the estimate with capacity. The station’s Wh rating is a measure of stored energy, not a runtime promise for a particular household or refrigerator.

A 1kWh-class station is a useful scale reference, not a guarantee that it will power an entire home or keep a refrigerator running for a fixed number of hours. EcoFlow lists its DELTA 2 at 1kWh and publishes a 7–14 hour estimate for a 120W refrigerator; that is the manufacturer’s estimate for its stated example, not an independent test or a promise for another appliance.

Compare the specifications that determine fit

What to compare Why it matters
Capacity (Wh) Indicates stored energy and helps you estimate how long planned loads may run.
Continuous AC output (W) Must cover the total running demand of appliances you intend to power at the same time.
Surge rating Relevant to brief startup demand from appliances with motors or compressors; check the actual load and station specifications.
AC, DC and USB ports Confirm the outlets and connectors suit the devices and cords in your plan.
Recharge inputs and rate Check supported AC, vehicle and solar inputs, their limits, and the required compatible cables or panels.
Expansion support Extra batteries can increase capacity only when the exact station model supports them.
Practical fit Compare weight, temperature limits, warranty and the placement your setup requires.

Specifications and included accessories can vary by market, bundle and product revision. Verify the current listing and manual for the exact version you are considering.

Two 1,000Wh-class examples

Model Capacity Rated AC output Surge Other listed detail
EcoFlow DELTA 2 1kWh 1800W Not stated on the cited product details EcoFlow lists optional capacity expansion with an extra battery.
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 1070Wh 1500W 3000W peak Jackery lists LiFePO4 chemistry and an approximate weight of 23.8 lb.

These manufacturer specifications illustrate why capacity and output are separate comparisons; neither model is automatically right for every outage plan. The larger output rating does not itself mean longer runtime. Runtime depends on stored energy, appliance draw and cycling, conversion losses, and any other connected devices.

Plan for recharging during a long outage

For an outage that may outlast the station’s stored energy, check how that exact model can be recharged. Review its AC, vehicle and solar input limits, compatible connectors and cables, and whether any required accessories are included. Solar charging depends on suitable conditions and setup; do not assume a panel will replenish the station at a particular rate in storm weather. Keep equipment within the operating conditions and installation guidance in its manual.

Prepare safely before and during a power outage

  • Charge phones and other essential devices before a storm, and identify alternative charging options.
  • Ask a doctor about medical devices that need electricity and plan how they will be powered. Do not assume a portable station alone is an adequate medical backup without checking the device’s needs and the station’s compatibility.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. FEMA’s 2023 power-outage guidance says a refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours and a full freezer for about 48 hours. FEMA advises discarding refrigerated food exposed to 40°F or higher for more than 4 hours.
  • Keep battery equipment dry, follow its manual, and avoid improvised wiring. To power built-in household circuits, use only a compatible, professionally installed transfer arrangement. Never plug a station or generator into a wall outlet to energize house wiring.
  • Combustion equipment presents a separate carbon-monoxide hazard. FEMA says: “Use generators, camp stoves or charcoal grills outdoors, at least 20 feet away from any building openings like windows, doors or garages.” This rule applies to fuel-burning equipment; a battery power station does not emit generator exhaust.

FEMA’s food-storage time and temperature figures describe outage food safety, not the performance of a particular power station. A station may extend refrigeration only if its output, capacity and connection setup suit the refrigerator and the planned duration.
