Wanderlog is the clearest fit for organizing and sequencing a trip; HERE has announced conversational route-planning features aimed at vehicle navigation, but its current consumer availability is not established here. Google Maps itself now describes a conversational planning feature, Ask Maps. These tools overlap, but there is no independent head-to-head evidence showing which produces the most accurate routes.
First decide which part of trip planning you want help with
“An AI assistant for maps” can mean three different things: turn-by-turn directions and traffic, an itinerary that collects places and assigns them to days, or a conversational interface that can interpret constraints such as “avoid tolls” or “find a café near the beach.” A product that is good at one job is not automatically a replacement for the others.

- Live navigation: prioritize directions, traffic and current route conditions for your travel mode and region.
- Itinerary building: prioritize saving places, assigning them to days, ordering stops and coordinating with companions.
- Conversational route requests: check whether the assistant can handle the particular constraints you care about, and whether it is actually available on your device or in your vehicle.
What Google Maps offers as a baseline
In its March 12, 2026 announcement, Google described Ask Maps as a conversational way to answer complex real-world questions, recommend stops along a trip, and provide directions, estimated arrival times and local tips. Google said the feature was beginning to roll out in the United States and India on Android and iOS, with desktop planned later. That is a dated rollout statement, not confirmation of availability in every country or on every device today. Check Google’s announcement and the app for current access.

The same announcement described Immersive Navigation, including route trade-offs such as a longer drive with less traffic versus a faster toll route, alerts about disruptions, destination previews, and parking and entrance guidance. Google also reported having over 300 million places, more than 500 million contributors, over 5 million traffic updates every second, and more than 10 million driver contributions each day. These are figures published by Google about its own service, not independently audited measures or proof that its routes outperform alternatives.

There is also a separate developer-facing capability: Google’s August 20, 2026 Maps Platform post says Grounding with Google Maps routing is generally available through Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Google describes support for driving, walking, transit, biking and other modes; real-time traffic; searches for places along routes; and trips with up to 13 intermediate stops. That availability applies to the platform integration. It does not establish that every consumer AI assistant has those capabilities. See Google’s Maps Platform post.
Which alternatives fit which trip-planning job?
| Option | Best-supported role | What its source describes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wanderlog | Map-based itinerary planning | Trip plans shown on a map; route optimization that rearranges stops; unlimited road-trip stops; estimated time and distance between places; offline plan access; group collaboration; itinerary organization; and exporting places to Google Maps. | Its listing describes the map as Google Maps-based, so it is an itinerary companion rather than a clearly independent map-data replacement. Features are described in its App Store listing. |
| HERE AI Assistant | Conversational assistance integrated into vehicle navigation | HERE describes personalized natural-language route suggestions based on user requests, preferences, driving habits and real-time conditions. Its examples include adding landmarks, rest areas, fuel or restaurant stops; meeting an arrival deadline while avoiding tolls and highways; and finding EV charging near the end of a route with a coffee shop. | HERE says the assistant is built for integration into passenger and commercial vehicle systems through HERE Navigation or the HERE SDK. Its announcement also described some integrations as planned or upcoming, including a 2025 HERE WeGo Pro launch. That date has passed, so the announcement alone does not verify present availability. See HERE’s announcement. |
| Plan WeGo | Day-by-day itinerary planning | The company describes AI trip planning, collaborative plans and viewing a trip on Google Maps. | Its feature and competitor comparisons are vendor claims; verify current pricing and the comparison details directly with Plan WeGo. |
How to choose for your trip
If you mainly need navigation
Choose a navigation service that supports your mode, destination region and need for current traffic or disruption information. A planner’s map view or saved itinerary is not, by itself, proof of turn-by-turn guidance or live conditions.

If you need to collect and order many places
Wanderlog’s described features match the common itinerary problem: gathering stops, arranging them, distributing them across a trip, and sharing the plan. Its offline access applies to plans; the listing does not establish offline map navigation, so do not assume it will provide turn-by-turn directions without a connection.

If your request involves several constraints
Requests such as “arrive by 5 p.m., avoid tolls, and stop for charging near the end” require both natural-language interpretation and usable map or route data. HERE’s announcement describes examples in this category, while Google describes Ask Maps as handling complex questions and recommending stops. Treat vendor descriptions as product claims, not comparative proof, and confirm the resulting route in the navigation tool before leaving.

If you are planning with other people or on a desktop
Check whether everyone can edit the same plan and whether the service works on the devices you will use. Wanderlog and Plan WeGo describe collaboration; Google’s March 2026 Ask Maps announcement said desktop was coming later, which should not be read as a statement of its current status. Rollouts can vary by country, operating system and vehicle integration.
A practical way to compare before relying on a tool
- Match the trip mode and location. Confirm support for driving, walking, transit or cycling where you are going, and check current availability in your country and on your device.
- Test the planning task. Try saving the places you need, assigning them to days, and ordering the stops. For conversational tools, test a real constraint such as avoiding tolls or finding a stop along the route.
- Check offline behavior separately. Determine whether the product stores the itinerary, map tiles, or both. Offline access to a plan does not necessarily mean offline navigation.
- Verify collaboration and handoff. If companions need to contribute, check shared editing. If you plan in one app and navigate in another, confirm that you can export or hand off the saved places.
- Review the route before departure. Check directions, opening hours and live conditions in the navigation service you will use; an AI-generated itinerary is a planning aid, not a guarantee that every stop or route remains suitable.
What the available comparisons do—and do not—show
The products are not interchangeable: Wanderlog is most clearly documented here as an itinerary organizer, HERE’s announced assistant is designed for vehicle-system integration, and Google describes both a consumer-facing conversational feature and a separate developer platform integration. The available product descriptions do not establish independent route-accuracy rankings, user-satisfaction comparisons or measured time savings. Choose by the job and availability you can verify, rather than treating any vendor’s feature list or scale figures as a comparative test.
