Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose a portable diesel generator by matching its verified continuous output, starting capacity, voltage and outlets to the household loads you need to run at the same time—and to the equipment used to connect it safely. Before buying, check the exact model’s runtime and fuel use at stated loads, storage and maintenance instructions, weight, noise, warranty, emissions information and local service support. Do not assume diesel alone guarantees a particular runtime or makes a model suitable for your home.
Start with the loads you need during an outage
Decide which appliances and circuits are essential, then identify which ones must operate simultaneously. Include motor-driven equipment such as pumps, which can require more power to start than to keep running. Compare the combined demand with the generator’s continuous rating and starting or surge capacity; do not size it from the continuous wattage of one appliance alone.

- List essential loads. Record the appliances or circuits you expect to use and their running and starting requirements where available.
- Decide what runs together. If the total demand is too high, plan which loads to switch off or operate in sequence.
- Check the exact generator. Confirm its continuous and starting ratings, voltage, and available receptacles in the manufacturer’s current specifications.
- Match the connection equipment. Confirm that the generator outlets, inlet, cords and transfer equipment support the intended loads and electrical connection.
There is no single generator size that suits every house. The right capacity depends on the loads you choose, their starting demands and the connection method.
Compare the specifications that affect real household use
Use the exact model’s current manufacturer documentation. A headline wattage or a fuel-type label is not enough to establish whether a generator will meet your needs.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Continuous output and starting capacity | Shows whether the generator can support the selected loads, including motor start-up demand. |
| Voltage and receptacles | Must suit the appliances, cords and transfer equipment you plan to use. |
| Runtime and fuel consumption | Check the stated load and test conditions for each figure; do not compare runtime figures taken at different loads as if they were equivalent. |
| Fuel storage and refueling instructions | Determine whether you can store and handle fuel as the manufacturer directs and refuel practically during an outage. |
| Weight and handling | Check the unit’s weight and whether its wheels and handles make it manageable for your intended storage and setup location. |
| Noise, starting and maintenance | Review the manufacturer’s noise information, starting procedure and maintenance intervals before relying on the generator. |
| Warranty, emissions and service | Verify the terms and availability that apply to the exact model and your location. |
| Safety features and instructions | Look for a carbon-monoxide shutoff feature, then read the operating, grounding and wet-weather guidance. A shutoff feature does not replace safe placement. |
No model-by-model comparison or diesel-specific output, runtime, fuel-use, noise or total-cost advantage is established here. Those figures should be assessed from current specifications for the particular generators under consideration.
Can you connect a portable generator to your house?
Yes, but a generator intended to supply home wiring needs a compatible transfer switch and proper installation. A manual transfer switch isolates generator power from utility power, helps prevent dangerous backfeeding and lets you manage selected loads. Generac says compatibility depends on the generator’s kW rating, outlet configuration and planned loads, and recommends installation by a qualified electrician. See its guidance on a manual transfer switch for a portable generator.

Do not connect a generator directly to building wiring. The generator output, receptacles, inlet, cords and installed switch must work together; the switch’s nominal amperage alone does not establish compatibility. Ask a qualified electrician about the equipment and local electrical requirements. Generac’s product information illustrates that particular switch configurations have defined compatibility and circuit uses; those details should not be generalized to an unidentified generator or switch: Generac transfer-switch product information.

Place the generator outdoors to prevent carbon-monoxide poisoning
Carbon monoxide (CO) from a generator is invisible and odorless. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that it can kill in minutes. Operate a portable generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the home and other buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors and vents. Never run it inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed area. The CPSC and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provide further generator safety guidance and power-outage indoor-air guidance.

Keep working CO alarms indoors. EPA advises having alarms on every level outside sleeping areas, consistent with CPSC’s recommendation. A CO shutoff feature is worth comparing; CPSC’s 2026 storm-safety notice recommends looking for one and following the generator’s manual, labels, maintenance guidance and warnings. It is an additional safeguard, not permission to operate the generator closer to a building or indoors. See the CPSC’s 2026 generator safety notice.
CPSC reported in 2024 that an average of nearly 100 U.S. consumers die each year from CO poisoning from portable generators, citing its latest report at that time. It also said standards PGMA G300-2018 and UL 2201 were estimated to reduce CO-poisoning deaths by 87% and 100%, respectively. These are estimates about standards, not guarantees for an individual generator or diesel-specific products; see the CPSC’s 2024 portable-generator safety notice.

Make the purchase decision model by model
- Buy only after checking the complete match: chosen loads, continuous and starting capacity, voltage, outlets and transfer equipment.
- Plan the fuel logistics: compare runtime and consumption at the loads you expect, and follow the manufacturer’s fuel-storage and handling directions.
- Check day-to-day practicality: account for weight, noise, starting procedure, maintenance, warranty and service availability.
- Confirm safe operation: review placement, exhaust direction, CO alarms, shutoff features and the manual’s grounding and weather instructions.
- Verify local requirements: electrical codes and permitting depend on jurisdiction, so check with the local authority and a qualified electrician.
