Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To choose a portable air conditioner for your room size, measure the space, compare the unit’s DOE seasonally adjusted cooling capacity (SACC) with its stated room coverage, and check that its duct and window kit will work in your home. Square footage is a starting point—not a portable-AC sizing formula—because sunlight, ceiling height, people, and heat-generating activities also affect cooling needs.
How do I choose a portable air conditioner for my room size?
- Measure the area to be cooled. Measure the room’s length and width and multiply them. For an irregular floor plan, divide it into simpler rectangles, calculate each area, and add them. Include connected space only if you expect the unit to cool it.
- Note conditions that change the load. Record whether the room gets strong sun or heavy shade, whether its ceiling is higher than the 8-foot ceiling used in ENERGY STAR’s general room-AC chart, how many people regularly occupy it, and whether cooking or equipment adds heat.
- Compare capacity and coverage claims. Look for the model’s DOE SACC rating and its manufacturer-stated room coverage. Compare models using the same capacity measure; if the SACC rating and room-coverage claim seem inconsistent, consult the product documentation rather than trying to convert one into the other.
- Confirm the installation will fit. Check the window opening, included bracket dimensions, duct arrangement, and exhaust route against the installation manual. A unit that cannot be vented as directed is not a practical fit, regardless of its capacity rating.
- Compare operating details. Where the manufacturer or DOE reports them, consider efficiency information such as CEER, condensate handling, controls, and the model’s permitted operating configurations.
DOE’s portable air conditioner information describes the category’s test procedure and standards. DOE’s 2023 test-procedure rule explains SACC and the different duct configurations. Neither source provides a universal portable-AC square-foot lookup chart.

What size portable AC do I need—and how many BTUs?
Use the DOE SACC figure as the like-for-like capacity rating when comparing portable models, then read the manufacturer’s room-coverage guidance in the context of your room. A product listing may show more than one BTU figure; do not assume that an ASHRAE or legacy rating is interchangeable with SACC. Check which rating each number represents before comparing units.
ENERGY STAR publishes a general room-air-conditioner chart based on an 8-foot ceiling. It lists 5,000 Btu/h for 100–150 sq. ft.; 6,000 for 150–250; 7,000 for 250–300; 8,000 for 300–350; 9,000 for 350–400; 10,000 for 400–450; and 12,000 for 450–550 sq. ft. These are general room-AC guidance figures, not portable-AC-specific recommendations or a way to convert room area into portable SACC.

- Room-to-Room Versatility: Lightweight with smooth-rolling casters, this compact AC moves effortlessly wherever cooling is needed. Perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, garages—any space up to 750 square feet
That same general guidance suggests reducing capacity by 10% for heavy shade, increasing it by 10% for a very sunny room, adding 600 Btu/h for each regular occupant beyond two, and adding 4,000 Btu/h for a kitchen. Treat these as room-AC adjustment examples, not a validated formula for choosing a portable air conditioner.
Which room conditions should change your choice?
- Sun and shade: Direct sun can increase the cooling burden; heavy shade can reduce it. Consider when and how long sunlight falls on the room, not only its total floor area.
- Ceiling height: A taller room contains more air than the 8-foot-high room assumed by the ENERGY STAR chart, so its square-foot figures may not describe it well.
- Occupancy: People add heat. Consider the number of regular occupants, rather than sizing only for the room’s occasional peak use.
- Cooking and equipment: Kitchens and heat-producing equipment add load. A portable unit’s performance also depends on conditions such as outdoor temperature, insulation, air leakage, and installation; a capacity figure cannot guarantee a particular room temperature.
Avoid automatically choosing the biggest unit. ENERGY STAR warns, for room air conditioners generally, that “If the unit is too large, it will cool the room before it has a chance to remove the humidity.” That guidance is not a portable-specific test result, but it is a useful reason to avoid oversizing without a clear need.

What is the difference between single-duct and dual-duct portable ACs?
The duct design affects how the air around the unit is used and what must fit at the window. DOE distinguishes the configurations in its portable-AC test-procedure rule:
| Configuration | How it handles condenser air | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Single-duct | Uses one exhaust duct and draws condenser inlet air from the conditioned space. | Confirm the exhaust hose can reach the supplied window bracket and be routed as the manual specifies. |
| Dual-duct | Uses separate inlet and exhaust duct arrangements. | Check that the window kit accommodates both ducts and that the planned routing follows the model’s installation directions. |
Some models may support more than one configuration; verify that in the model documentation instead of assuming it from the product category. Duct count alone does not establish how well a unit will cool a particular room.

Will the portable AC fit my window?
Before buying, measure the window opening and compare it with the dimensions and adjustment range of the included bracket. Check the window type, whether the bracket can be secured as directed, how far the hose must reach, and whether the required inlet and exhaust openings can be arranged without obstructing the window or the unit. DOE identifies adjustable window brackets as part of portable-AC duct arrangements, but the actual dimensions and compatibility are model-specific.
- Read the exact model’s installation manual, not just a generic product description.
- Confirm the bracket fits the window’s width and opening style.
- Check the required number of hose openings and the permitted hose route.
- If the included bracket will not fit, verify that any replacement vent kit is explicitly compatible with the model before relying on it.
How should I compare portable AC models?
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| DOE SACC | Compare the applicable SACC capacity rating across models. | It is the relevant seasonal capacity measure for comparing portable units; do not treat differently defined BTU ratings as equivalent. |
| Room guidance | Read the manufacturer’s stated room coverage alongside your room’s sun, ceiling height, occupancy, and heat sources. | A coverage claim is not a guarantee for every room or a substitute for considering actual conditions. |
| Duct configuration | Check whether the unit is single-duct or dual-duct and whether the manufacturer permits another configuration. | The arrangement determines the exhaust and, where applicable, inlet setup needed at the window. |
| Window compatibility | Compare the included bracket and hose arrangement with the actual window and planned route. | A unit must have an exhaust path installed according to its manual. |
| Efficiency and operation | Review reported efficiency metrics such as CEER, condensate handling, and controls in official product information. | These details can help distinguish models with similar capacity claims. |
DOE says compliance with portable-AC standards established in its January 10, 2020 final rule is required beginning January 10, 2025. This is a regulatory timeline, not a cooling-performance statistic. ENERGY STAR’s room-AC sizing page should not be read as certification or portable-AC sizing guidance.
