Choose a cue for the game you play, then check that its length, weight, balance, and tip suit your stance and stroke. For American pool, 58 inches, about 19 ounces, and a 12–13 mm playing tip are useful reference points—not universal targets. Blackball, snooker, carom, and break or jump cues can differ substantially.
Start with the game and cue type
“Pool cue” can mean different equipment depending on the discipline. American pool, blackball (English pool), snooker, and carom use different typical dimensions. A playing cue is also not interchangeable with a break or jump cue: those cues are designed for different shots and may have different tip sizes, lengths, and weights.

| Discipline or use | Length | Weight | Tip diameter | What the figures represent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pool playing cue | 147 cm / 58 in | 540 g / 19 oz | 11.75–13 mm | Kozoom supplier guidance, updated February 12, 2021; a reference, not a universal standard. Source |
| Pool cue, descriptive average | Not stated | 560 g | Usually 13 mm | Descriptive figures reported in the Society of Wood Science and Technology’s 2022 chapter. It also reports a 44 cm balance point; this is not a recommendation. Source |
| Blackball cue | 145 cm / 57 in | 510 g / 18 oz | 8–8.5 mm | Kozoom listing, updated February 12, 2021. Source |
| Snooker cue | 145 cm / 57 in | 510 g / 18 oz | 9–10 mm | Kozoom listing, updated February 12, 2021. The 2022 academic chapter also gives 9 or 10 mm as usual for snooker. Source |
| Carom and five-pin billiards | Not stated | Not stated | Usually 12–12.5 mm | Tip diameter reported by the Society of Wood Science and Technology in 2022. Source |
| Pool break cue | Not stated | Not stated | 12.75–13 mm | Kozoom supplier guidance, updated February 12, 2021. Source |
| Pool jump cue | 100–120 cm / 40–47 in | 300 g / 10.5 oz | Not stated | Kozoom supplier guidance, updated February 12, 2021. Source |
These are reference figures from different kinds of sources, not results from a controlled comparison. The academic chapter describes cue lengths across disciplines as ranging from 140 to 165 cm and notes longer cues are often used for Russian pyramid. If you play a specific discipline, use its equipment conventions and rules rather than assuming an American-pool cue is the default.

A 58-inch cue is a common American-pool reference, but the right length depends on how you stand and where your bridge hand and back hand naturally sit. A cue that feels comfortable while standing upright may feel awkward in your actual playing position. Height alone is not enough to establish a fixed cue length.

- Set up in your normal stance at a table and hold the cue as you do for an ordinary shot.
- Check whether your back hand can grip naturally on the butt without crowding its end or reaching uncomfortably far forward.
- Make several slow practice strokes. Look for room to move the cue straight through the shot without your body, clothing, or the cue butt obstructing the stroke.
- If possible, compare another length in the same stance. Treat sizing charts as maker guidance, not a substitute for checking your own fit.
Masi Carbon’s August 17, 2026 sizing guide also emphasizes stance and arm length and suggests checking the back hand in the player’s usual position; that is manufacturer guidance. Read the sizing guide.
Compare weight and balance, not just the number on the cue
For American pool, Kozoom lists 540 g (19 oz) as a typical playing-cue reference. The 2022 academic chapter reports a 560 g average pool-cue mass and a 44 cm balance point as descriptive information. The figures are not identical because they come from different sources and serve different purposes; neither identifies a weight that suits every player.

Total weight does not tell you where the cue’s mass is distributed. Two cues with the same stated weight can feel different in the hand because their balance differs. Compare both the listed weight and balance when manufacturers provide them, and try the cue with your normal stroke if you can. The available sources do not establish a universally optimal weight or show that one weight produces better results for all players.
Match tip diameter and hardness to the discipline
For an American-pool playing cue, the cited supplier range is 11.75–13 mm, while the academic chapter describes 13 mm as usual for pool. Those are useful starting points, not guarantees of better control or accuracy. Kozoom lists a wider 12.75–13 mm range for break cues, and much smaller tips for blackball and snooker. Choose for the game and cue type rather than selecting by diameter alone.

Tip hardness is another characteristic to compare, but the cited sources do not establish a best hardness or controlled performance differences between hardness levels. If replacing a tip, match the replacement to the cue’s existing diameter and attachment; do not assume a tip made for a different cue or discipline will fit.
Understand shaft and butt materials
Wood and engineered wood are common cue materials. The Society of Wood Science and Technology’s 2022 chapter identifies maple as especially common for pool shafts and ash as especially common for snooker shafts. It also notes that glass and carbon fibers and aluminum appear in the market. Shaft characteristics depend on factors including mechanical performance, grain, and taper, so the material name alone does not determine how a cue will play.

The outer layer uses paint materials, which not only ensures a beautiful appearance, but also increases the service life of the cue
Carbon-fiber cues are an available alternative to wood. A carbon-cue maker describes advantages for its material, but that is a maker’s claim rather than independent evidence establishing a universal performance winner. Compare the actual construction, care expectations, price, and feel, and try the cue if possible. The cited sources do not settle which material is best for every player.

Check compatibility before buying a separate shaft
If you are buying a replacement shaft or planning an upgrade, confirm that it is compatible with your cue’s joint. The sources identify joint compatibility as a relevant purchase check but do not provide a universal joint standard or a model-by-model compatibility list. Verify the joint type and dimensions with the cue maker or seller before ordering; similar-looking parts should not be assumed to fit.

Keep tournament limits separate from buying advice
The Billiard Congress of America’s 2008 equipment specification document gives a minimum cue length of 40 inches, a maximum weight of 25 ounces, and a maximum tip width of 14 mm. These are limits in that document, not recommended dimensions. The document is dated 2008 and does not establish that every current league or tournament uses the same rules. Check the rules for the specific event before relying on those limits. Read the BCA equipment specifications.
