For most people, a PS5 is the simplest current-console choice for a PS4 library. Sony says PS5 plays PS4 games in both disc and digital formats, with more than 4,000 PS4 games playable across PS4 and PS5. If your collection is on PS4 discs, you need a PS5 configuration with a disc drive. A PS5 does not read PS3 game discs, so a PS3 collection requires compatible PS3 hardware unless the exact title is available through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog as a stream.
Start with the games you actually own
The phrase “older games” can mean very different things. A shelf of PS4 discs, a digital PS4 library, PS3 discs, and a wish list of classic games lead to different purchases. Identify the format and PlayStation generation before comparing consoles.

- PS4 discs: Choose a PS5 model that has an optical disc drive, then check the individual game’s compatibility.
- Digital PS4 purchases: A PS5 can access the library after you sign in with the account that bought the games, subject to the title’s compatibility.
- PS3 discs: Use compatible PS3 hardware. PS5 consoles do not read PS3 game discs.
- Games you do not own: Investigate the current PlayStation Plus Premium catalog and whether each desired title is streamable in your region.
This generation-based check prevents the most expensive mistake: buying a PS5 expecting it to accept every PlayStation disc ever released. The verified compatibility described by Sony covers PS4 games on PS5; it does not establish universal PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc support.

|---|---|---|
| PS4 discs and digital PS4 purchases on a current console | PS5 with a disc drive when discs are involved | Individual game compatibility; exact PS5 model and drive configuration |
| A digital PS4 library | PS5 using the account that owns the purchases | Account access and compatibility of each specific game |

| Selected older games without the original hardware | PlayStation Plus Premium catalog and streaming | Exact title in your region, required membership tier, and internet speed |
The table describes routes, not guarantees. Catalog membership does not make every old game available, and the broad PS4 count is not a promise that every individual title works. Treat each game as a separate compatibility check.

When a PS5 is the right choice for PS4 games
More than 4,000 PS4 games are the relevant figure
Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem overview says more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on both PS4 and PS5. That number concerns PS4 software; it is not a count of compatible PS3, PS2, or PS1 games, and it is not an independent laboratory test. It is useful as a measure of the breadth of the PS4 library, while the individual-title check remains decisive.
Disc owners must choose the correct PS5 configuration
A PS4 disc is a physical license and must be inserted into a console that can read it. Select a PS5 model with a disc drive and verify the exact edition listed by the seller. Product names and configurations can differ by market or revision, so do not rely on a photograph or a shortened listing title. The drive requirement applies even if most of your collection is digital; one disc-based game still requires the appropriate hardware.
Digital owners need the purchasing account
Digital PS4 purchases are associated with the PlayStation account used to acquire them. On the PS5, sign in with that account and look for the games in the library. If a family member’s account bought a title, signing in with a different account may not show it as owned. Before you sell or deactivate an old console, make sure you know the account email, password, and any required two-step verification method.

Sony’s general compatibility guidance is a starting point rather than a substitute for a title lookup. Search the official PlayStation listing or compatibility guidance for every game that matters to you. Pay attention to the exact edition, region, and any note that distinguishes a PS4 version from a separate remaster or bundle. If one game is the reason for your purchase, verify it before paying for the console.
Why a PS5 will not replace a PS3 disc console
PS3 discs are an explicit exception
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Philippines support page states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” That is a direct hardware-compatibility limitation, not a setting that can be enabled with an update. A PS3 disc collection therefore needs compatible PS3 hardware if you want to use the discs you already own.
Buy the console around the specific PS3 game
When shopping for used or replacement PS3 hardware, identify the exact game and the console model before completing the purchase. Confirm that the disc is from a compatible region when regional restrictions apply, inspect the seller’s condition description, and ask whether the console reads discs reliably. A generic listing for “a PS3” does not by itself establish that it is the right match for every title or that its optical drive is healthy.

Do not assume a PS3 disc becomes a digital license
Putting a PS3 disc into another PlayStation console does not transfer ownership into a downloadable version. If you want to play without the original disc hardware, look for the title in the current PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog instead. Availability in that catalog is a separate decision from disc compatibility.
Using PlayStation Plus Premium for selected classics
A catalog is access, not permanent ownership
PlayStation Plus Premium members may stream selected games from the catalog. Sony’s support information describes classic PS3 games in the Classics Catalog as streaming-only. Streaming lets a compatible device run the game from Sony’s service while your membership and the title’s availability continue; it does not turn a PS3 disc into a downloadable PS5 game.
Availability changes by region and over time
Before subscribing, search the current catalog for the exact game in the country tied to your PlayStation account. Sony’s catalog pages can vary by region, and games can be added or removed. A title appearing in a list, video, or forum post is not proof that it is available in your market today. Check the game’s current listing and read whether it is streamable, downloadable, or limited to another platform.
Streaming has a published bandwidth floor
Sony’s PlayStation Plus game-streaming guidance specifies a minimum connection of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Treat those numbers as service requirements, not a promise of a particular experience on every home network.
| Streaming target | Published minimum |
|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus game streaming | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p game streaming | 15 Mbps |
Run a speed test on the connection used by the console rather than relying on the speed advertised for your broadband plan. If the measured speed is below the applicable minimum, streaming may fail to start or may not meet the selected quality. Also consider whether your home connection has data limits or is shared heavily at the time you play; those practical conditions can make a service that meets the headline speed less predictable.
Streaming is the wrong fit for some collections
Choose original hardware instead when you need to use your own PS3 discs, want access to a game that is absent from the current catalog, or cannot maintain the required connection. Choose Premium streaming when the games you want are listed in your region, you accept membership-based access, and you prefer not to source older hardware.

A step-by-step buying process
1. Make an inventory
- Write down every older game you consider essential.
- Mark each one as a PS4 disc, a digital PS4 purchase, a PS3 disc, or a game you hope to access through a catalog.
- Record the account that owns each digital purchase and the region in which the account is registered.
This inventory exposes mixed collections. You may need a PS5 for most PS4 games and a PS3 for a smaller group of disc-only titles, rather than one console that does everything.
2. Separate must-play titles from nice-to-have titles
Check the must-play games first. If a single PS3 disc is non-negotiable, a PS5 alone cannot satisfy the requirement. If all essentials are PS4 games, proceed with the PS5 compatibility and drive checks. If none are owned and you are flexible about which classics to play, evaluate the Premium catalog after checking current regional listings.
3. Verify each game’s format and edition
- Open the official PlayStation game listing or compatibility guidance for the title.
- Confirm that the listing is for the same generation and edition you own.
- For a disc, confirm that your planned PS5 has a disc drive; for a digital purchase, confirm access to the owning account.
- For a catalog title, confirm that it is currently available to stream in your region and that your membership tier includes streaming.
Do not infer compatibility from a remaster, remake, bundle, or similarly named release. The product you own and the product listed by Sony must match closely enough for the relevant support statement to apply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Choose hardware based on the most restrictive requirement
The most restrictive requirement determines the purchase. A PS4 disc collection requires a disc-drive PS5. A PS3 disc collection requires compatible PS3 hardware. A catalog-only plan requires a supported streaming setup and the necessary membership. If your collection combines these cases, budget for separate hardware rather than assuming the newest console replaces the older one.
5. Confirm the listing before checkout
- Read the full model description and verify whether an optical disc drive is included.
- Check that the seller’s region and edition match your games and account.
- For used PS3 hardware, confirm the exact model, disc-reading condition, included cables or controllers, and return terms.
- For Premium, check the live regional catalog and the current membership terms instead of relying on an old recommendation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a digital-only PS5 for a disc library
A digital-only configuration cannot read your PS4 discs. You would have to repurchase an available digital version, and even that would still require the individual game to be compatible. If physical discs are part of your plan, select the drive-equipped configuration from the start.
Assuming the 4,000-game figure covers every classic generation
The published figure is for PS4 games playable on PS4 and PS5. It does not establish native support for PS3, PS2, or PS1 discs. Use generation-specific evidence for each game rather than extending the number beyond what it measures.

Expecting a PS5 to accept a PS3 disc
This is the clearest documented limitation. Sony’s support statement explicitly excludes PS3 discs. Keep compatible PS3 hardware or investigate a catalog stream for the exact title.
Subscribing before checking the catalog
Premium does not guarantee that a particular older game is included. Catalog contents and streaming availability can vary by region and change over time. Search first, then decide whether the subscription provides enough of the games you actually want.
Ignoring the account behind digital purchases
A PS5 cannot display another person’s digital purchases simply because both consoles are in the same household. Recover the purchasing account before you migrate, and verify that you can sign in before disposing of the old console.
Treating the bandwidth number as a guarantee
Five Mbps is Sony’s minimum for PlayStation Plus game streaming, while 15 Mbps is the stated figure for 1080p. If your connection is below those thresholds, address the connection before blaming the console. If it meets them, remember that the game must still be available and streamable in your region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide when your collection spans generations
Mostly PS4, with a few discs
A disc-drive PS5 is the practical center of this setup. It covers compatible PS4 discs and can access digital PS4 purchases through the owning account. Keep a compatible PS3 only if the remaining PS3 games are important enough to justify separate hardware.
Mostly digital PS4, no discs
A PS5 is the straightforward route, provided you can access the account that owns the purchases and your essential games pass the individual compatibility check. The optical drive is not required for the digital titles themselves, but buying a drive-equipped model preserves the option to use physical games later.

Mostly PS3 discs
Start with compatible PS3 hardware, not a PS5. A Premium subscription can supplement the collection only when the desired titles appear in the current regional streaming catalog and you accept access tied to membership.
A short list of classic games, no existing collection
Search the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog title by title. Compare the result with the cost and condition of compatible original hardware, and account for the 5 Mbps minimum or 15 Mbps 1080p figure if you plan to stream. If the exact games are absent, a newer console cannot solve that catalog gap by itself.
What the official evidence does—and does not—establish
The current official information supports a clear but limited conclusion:
Recommended Free Tools
- PS5 supports PS4 games in disc and digital formats, and Sony reports more than 4,000 PS4 games playable on PS4 and PS5.
- PS5 consoles do not support PS3 game discs.
- Selected classic PS3 games in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog are streaming-only, and Premium members may stream selected catalog titles.
- PlayStation Plus streaming guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p.
Those statements do not promise that every PS4 title works, that every PS3 game is in the catalog, or that PS1 and PS2 discs work on PS5. Sony’s pages also note that catalog benefits and availability can vary by region and change over time. Use the exact game listing as the final authority for a purchase.
Final checklist
- Have you listed the games you must play?
- Do you know which are PS4 discs, digital PS4 purchases, PS3 discs, or catalog candidates?
- If you own PS4 discs, does the selected PS5 configuration include a disc drive?
- Can you sign in to the account that owns your digital games?
- Have you checked every essential title individually?
- If you own PS3 discs, have you chosen compatible PS3 hardware rather than assuming PS5 support?
- If you plan to stream, is each title currently available in your region and is your connection at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p?
For a predominantly PS4 library, buy the PS5 configuration that matches your ownership format and verify the games that matter. For PS3 discs, retain or obtain compatible PS3 hardware. For a small selection of classics, use Premium streaming only after confirming the current regional catalog and your connection.
