Which Wi‑Fi and DHCP Settings Should You Disable on a Bridged ISP Router?

Short answer: when an ISP gateway is genuinely in bridge or modem-only mode, its routing job moves to your separate router. The gateway commonly stops performing NAT and local DHCP, while the downstream router supplies private addresses, routing, firewall functions and usually Wi‑Fi. Do not assume that switching off Wi‑Fi alone creates bridge mode, or that every gateway disables the same services. Confirm the behavior for your exact model and ISP before changing settings.

What bridge mode changes

A normal ISP gateway combines a modem with a router. It receives the provider connection, translates private addresses with NAT, runs a firewall, assigns LAN addresses with DHCP and often broadcasts Wi‑Fi. A separate router connected behind it can therefore create two routing layers, commonly called double NAT.

Bridge mode (also called modem-only mode on some gateways) changes that division of labor. The ISP device passes the provider-facing connection through to the downstream router instead of routing the home network itself. In NETGEAR’s C7100V instructions, disabling NAT puts the modem-router into bridge operation and passes the ISP WAN address to the downstream router. BT Business describes Smart Hub 2 modem-only mode as disabling NAT, DHCP, DNS and LTE mobile connections.

The exact feature set is vendor- and service-specific. Bridge mode may disable management features, voice or television functions, wireless radios, or additional Ethernet ports. Those effects must come from the gateway’s guide or the ISP; there is no universal bridge-mode checklist that applies to every model.

Which settings normally move to the downstream router?

NAT and routing

The downstream router should be in its normal router mode when the gateway is successfully bridged. It receives the ISP-side address on its Internet/WAN port and creates the private home network behind it. The gateway should no longer be the device deciding routes between your LAN and the internet.

Disabling NAT manually is not automatically equivalent to a supported bridge mode. Some gateways require a specific modem-only setting, reboot, or ISP-side provisioning. Use the documented mode rather than toggling an isolated NAT switch and guessing what remains active.

DHCP

DHCP is the service that gives clients an address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS information. In a bridged design, the gateway’s LAN DHCP service is normally disabled and the downstream router supplies those settings. NETGEAR’s 4G LTE modem documentation states: “Note: Enabling Bridge mode automatically disables the modem’s DHCP server.”

That statement applies to that LTE product, not every ISP gateway. The safe rule is functional: only disable the gateway’s DHCP server when another device is already configured to serve the same LAN. If the gateway is still the only router, turning off DHCP can leave phones, computers and smart-home devices with no usable address.

DNS forwarding

Some modem-only implementations also stop acting as a DNS forwarder. BT Business lists DNS among the Smart Hub 2 functions disabled in modem-only mode. Other gateways may continue to expose a management address or DNS-related setting. Do not change a separate DNS control unless the model’s instructions tie it to bridge operation.

Wi‑Fi radios

Wireless behavior is the least consistent part of bridge mode. A gateway may turn its radios off automatically, leave them configurable, or provide a separate access-point mode. The 4G LTE example documents bridge behavior but does not establish a rule for all gateways. Linksys tells users to configure Wi‑Fi first in its Dual-Band WiFi Router bridge setup and warns that screens vary by model.

If the downstream router is providing the only home Wi‑Fi, disabling the gateway’s wireless networks avoids an unnecessary second set of SSIDs and reduces confusion. If the gateway’s wireless service is needed for a provider-managed feature, guest network or coverage area, follow the ISP’s instructions instead. Wi‑Fi off by itself does not disable NAT or DHCP.

Choose the correct topology before changing anything

Characteristic ISP gateway in bridge/modem-only mode + downstream router ISP gateway remains router + downstream device in AP mode
Routing and NAT Downstream router performs routing; NETGEAR’s C7100V example passes the ISP WAN address to it. ISP gateway remains the router and NAT device; the downstream unit provides access-point functions.
DHCP Gateway DHCP may be disabled automatically; downstream router is expected to assign LAN addresses. Keep the gateway’s LAN DHCP active. AP behavior depends on the specific downstream product.
Gateway Wi‑Fi May switch off, remain configurable or follow an ISP-specific implementation. NETGEAR’s documented fallback turns gateway Wi‑Fi off while the downstream unit runs in AP mode.
Downstream operating mode Router mode, unless the ISP or equipment guide says otherwise. Access-point mode, not ordinary router mode.

These are two different designs. In the first, the downstream router owns the home network. In the second, the ISP gateway owns it and the downstream box simply extends wired and wireless access. Calling both “bridge mode” can cause a wrong DHCP or Wi‑Fi decision.

Step-by-step: using a supported gateway bridge mode

  1. Identify the exact hardware and service. Record the gateway model, hardware revision and ISP. Look for the provider’s bridge, modem-only or passthrough guide. TP-Link advises checking the ISP modem documentation before enabling bridge mode; this is especially important for bundled voice, television or LTE services.
  2. Back up the current configuration. Save screenshots or an exported configuration if the gateway supports it. Bridge mode can remove access to ordinary LAN settings and may require a factory reset to undo.
  3. Read the mode’s consequences. Confirm whether NAT, DHCP, DNS, Wi‑Fi, guest networks, extra Ethernet ports or service features are disabled. NETGEAR’s LTE instructions, for example, allow only one connected device in bridge mode and disable DHCP automatically.
  4. Enable bridge or modem-only mode using the documented menu. Do not infer the path from another model’s interface. Some providers must enable the feature remotely, and some gateways reboot when it is applied.
  5. Connect the cable as specified. NETGEAR’s own-router instructions use an Ethernet connection from the gateway’s Ethernet port to the downstream router’s Internet/WAN port. Use the port and cable arrangement shown by your equipment guide.
  6. Set the downstream device to router mode. Let it obtain the ISP connection on its WAN side, then configure its LAN subnet, administrator password, firewall and wireless networks. It should become the DHCP server for clients on that LAN.
  7. Reconnect clients to the downstream network. Renew the address on wired and wireless devices, or disconnect and reconnect them. They should receive addresses from the downstream router rather than the bridged gateway.
  8. Verify the handoff. In the downstream router’s status page, check that the WAN connection is established and that clients have local addresses, a default gateway and DNS servers. Browse to an external site, then confirm that devices can still communicate with one another as intended.

Fallback: keep the gateway routing and use AP mode

Some ISP gateways cannot be bridged, or the ISP may refuse to enable the function. NETGEAR documents a different arrangement: turn off the gateway’s Wi‑Fi and put the separate router into access-point mode. In that design, the ISP gateway continues to provide NAT, routing and DHCP. The downstream unit supplies wired and wireless access without creating another routing layer.

  1. Leave the gateway’s routing and LAN DHCP enabled.
  2. Disable its wireless networks only if the AP will replace them and the provider does not require them.
  3. Connect the gateway LAN to the downstream unit’s LAN or uplink port according to the AP guide; AP products differ on which port is used.
  4. Select AP or access-point mode on the downstream unit. Do not leave it in ordinary router mode.
  5. Allow the gateway to assign addresses, then test clients from the AP.

Synology’s SRM documentation uses “wireless AP (access point) mode” as another name for its own bridge mode and says local DHCP is disabled there, with a guest-network exception. That terminology is product-specific, so read the downstream device’s documentation rather than assuming every AP behaves identically.

What not to disable

  • Do not disable DHCP on the only active router. If no other DHCP server is configured, clients may fall back to self-assigned addresses and lose internet access.
  • Do not treat Wi‑Fi as the routing switch. A silent wireless radio can still leave NAT and DHCP active.
  • Do not run router mode behind an unbridged gateway without a reason. That commonly creates double NAT, which can complicate inbound connections, gaming, VPNs and device discovery.
  • Do not disable gateway DNS, firewall or service controls individually unless the provider’s instructions require it. Their dependencies differ by model.
  • Do not assume all Ethernet ports remain usable. A bridge implementation may restrict service to one port; the NETGEAR LTE example documents a one-device limit.

Address and gateway checks

On a client, inspect its network details. It should have an address in the downstream router’s LAN range, a default gateway pointing to that router and reachable DNS servers. If the client shows no address or an automatic/self-assigned address, the intended DHCP server is not answering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WAN status

The downstream router’s Internet page should show an established WAN connection. If it shows no address, check whether the ISP requires a particular connection type, login, VLAN or MAC registration; those requirements are provider-specific and are not established universally by bridge mode documentation.

Double-NAT indication

If the downstream router’s WAN address is itself a private address supplied by the gateway, the gateway is probably still routing. Confirm that bridge mode actually applied, or deliberately switch to the AP topology instead of leaving two routers active.

Wireless behavior

Scan for the old gateway SSID and the new router SSID. An absent gateway SSID may be expected, but its presence does not prove that routing remains enabled or disabled. Use the gateway’s status page and the model guide to determine its role.

Troubleshooting common failures

No devices receive an address

Reconnect a client, reboot the downstream router and check that its DHCP server is enabled. If the gateway was bridged, verify that the cable is in the downstream router’s WAN port and that the bridge mode did not require an ISP-side activation. If you intended AP mode, restore the gateway’s DHCP service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Internet works but inbound services fail

Check whether the topology is still double NAT. A private WAN address on the downstream router indicates that the gateway is still performing NAT. Either complete the supported bridge setup or use AP mode and place any required port rules on the gateway.

Only one device works

Some bridge implementations intentionally expose one connected device. NETGEAR documents that limitation for its 4G LTE modem. Connect the downstream router as that device; do not attach several clients directly to a gateway port unless the provider says that is supported.

Provider services stop working

Voice, television, LTE fallback and remote management can depend on the gateway’s original routing functions. BT Business explicitly lists LTE mobile connections among the Smart Hub 2 functions disabled in modem-only mode. Contact the ISP or revert using its documented procedure rather than enabling random services.

You can no longer open the gateway’s admin page

Bridge mode may move or restrict management access. Connect through the documented management path, use the downstream router’s status information, or follow the gateway’s reset and recovery instructions. Avoid factory-resetting provider equipment until you have its re-provisioning details.

How the documented examples differ

  • NETGEAR 4G LTE modem: bridge mode automatically disables DHCP and permits only one connected device, according to NETGEAR Support, last updated July 7, 2025.
  • NETGEAR C7100V: disabling NAT is described as putting the modem-router into bridge mode and handing the ISP WAN address to a downstream router.
  • BT Business Smart Hub 2: modem-only mode disables NAT, DHCP, DNS and LTE mobile functions.
  • Synology SRM: its wireless AP mode is also called bridge mode in that product’s terminology; local DHCP is disabled, with a guest-network exception.
  • Linksys Dual-Band WiFi Router: its bridge setup asks users to configure Wi‑Fi first and warns that images vary by model.
  • TP-Link guidance: consult the ISP modem documentation before enabling bridge mode.

These examples demonstrate why a setting name alone is insufficient. The same word can describe a gateway’s modem-only handoff, a router’s wireless AP mode or a provider-specific implementation with different limits.

A practical decision checklist

  • Do you want the separate router to own routing, firewall, DHCP and Wi‑Fi? Use supported gateway bridge/modem-only mode, then run the downstream unit as a router.
  • Can the gateway not be bridged? Keep it as the router, disable its Wi‑Fi only if appropriate, and use AP mode downstream.
  • Is another DHCP server definitely active before you disable gateway DHCP?
  • Does the ISP require special settings or remote activation?
  • Does the cable run from the gateway’s specified Ethernet port to the downstream device’s specified WAN or uplink port?
  • After the change, do clients receive addresses from the intended device and does the downstream WAN status match the selected topology?

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I disable Wi‑Fi or DHCP first?

Neither setting should be changed blindly. Select the supported bridge or AP design first, then follow that model’s sequence. Bridge mode may disable DHCP automatically; Wi‑Fi may remain configurable.

Can I keep using the ISP gateway’s Wi‑Fi in bridge mode?

Sometimes, but behavior is model-specific. If the separate router is intended to provide the home WLAN, turning off the gateway radios avoids duplicate networks unless the ISP requires them.

Why does disabling DHCP break my internet?

The gateway may still be the only device assigning LAN addresses. Restore its DHCP service or configure the downstream router as the active DHCP server in a supported bridge topology.
