Choose a photo printer by starting with the largest print you plan to make and how often you expect to print. Then check that its ink, supported paper and feed path suit the finish you want, and compare the likely cost of the printer, ink and paper. For image sharpness, use the photo’s pixel dimensions and intended print size—not the printer’s advertised maximum DPI.
How do I choose the right photo printer?
- Set your largest print size. Decide whether you need snapshots, letter-size prints, 13 × 19-inch prints or panoramas. Check the exact regional model’s supported sheet or roll sizes, including which sizes allow borderless printing.
- Match the ink and paper to the result. Consider whether you mainly want glossy color photos, matte prints or textured fine-art media. Check accepted paper types, thickness limits and feed paths, as well as the specific model’s ink set and manufacturer permanence claims.
- Estimate ownership cost for your volume. Compare printer, ink, paper and maintenance costs for how much you expect to print. Cartridge models may cost less initially; refillable tanks may reduce ongoing ink costs for frequent printing. The cited sources do not establish a universal cost per print.
- Check workflow features. Verify connectivity, borderless options, paper feeds and color-management support against your needs. Printer-and-paper-specific ICC profiles can help make color output more predictable.
Ink guidance is a starting point, not a guarantee of a particular print’s look or lifespan. Epson’s UK buying guide describes dye ink as suited to vibrant glossy prints and hobby use, and positions pigment ink for archival, fine-art and professional work; actual results and permanence depend on the printer, paper, storage and display conditions. Read Epson’s photo-printer buying guide.

Which ink and printer type fits your use?
Cartridge or refillable tank
Epson Europe describes cartridge printers as tending to have a lower initial cost and refillable tanks as a lower ongoing-cost option for high-volume printing. Its recommendations map Epson’s Expression Photo range to home enthusiasts, EcoTank Photo to higher-volume, cost-conscious work, and SureColor to professional and fine-art uses. These are descriptions of Epson’s own product lines, not an independent comparison of brands. See Epson Europe’s printer guidance.
Dye or pigment ink
Dye inks are commonly associated with vivid glossy output, while pigment sets are commonly used for fine-art and professional work. Compare the actual inks in the model you are considering and consult its manufacturer’s permanence information rather than treating either ink type as a promise of longevity. Epson says that above roughly 240–300 printer DPI, further increases are nearly invisible at ordinary viewing distances; this is manufacturer guidance, not a universal quality test.

Examples of different printer classes
Product specifications show why it is important to compare models by use rather than by a single headline number. Canon’s U.S. PIXMA G6020/G620 listing describes pigment black and dye color inks, support for glossy, semi-gloss and matte media, and common photo sizes through letter. The page title uses “G620,” while its URL and listing body identify “G6020,” so verify the exact model sold in your market. Check Canon’s PIXMA listing.
Canon lists the U.S. imagePROGRAF PRO-310 as a 13-inch wireless photo printer with nine pigment color inks plus Chroma Optimizer, borderless output from 3.5 × 5 inches to 13 × 19 inches, and a maximum resolution of 4800 × 2400 dpi. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent print-quality test results. Check Canon’s PRO-310 specifications.

Which photo paper and settings should you use?
Choose a surface for the image and viewing conditions
- Glossy: tends to emphasize saturation and contrast.
- Matte: can soften tones and reduce glare.
- Textured fine-art paper: adds a tactile surface character.
These are general tendencies, not guarantees for every printer-paper combination. Canon’s training guidance discusses these finish differences and notes that third-party fine-art brands such as Hahnemühle, Canson, Moab and Red River offer profiles for Canon professional inkjet photo printers. Read Canon’s paper and print-presentation guidance.
Check feed compatibility and driver settings
- Confirm the printer accepts the paper’s size and thickness, and that the correct feed path can handle it.
- For coated photo paper, print on the coated side; HP notes that photo paper is typically coated on one side, so turn duplex printing off for photos.
- In the print driver, choose the media type that matches the paper loaded. HP warns that color output can be less predictable if both the application and printer manage color at once; let one manage it, not both.
- When image and paper aspect ratios differ, borderless printing may enlarge and crop the image slightly. Check the preview and leave room around important details.
See HP’s photo-printing guidance. Printer settings can affect results as well as paper choice: Epson’s support example ties Photo, Best Photo and Photo RPM quality options to 1440, 2880 and 5760 dpi respectively, with the highest option dependent on model and optimized resolution. Those figures describe Epson driver guidance only. Epson cautions that mismatched media settings can cause running ink, uneven tones or poor quality, and that an unnecessarily high quality setting on unsuitable paper may produce blurry or oversaturated output. Read Epson’s driver-setting FAQ.

What resolution do I need to print a photo?
For planning, aim for about 300 pixels per inch (PPI) in the image at the final print size. Divide the image’s pixel width and height by 300 to estimate a print size in inches. Canon Canada’s 2020 guide uses a 2000 × 3400-pixel image as an example: at that density it works out to about 6 × 11 inches, with 5 × 7 inches suggested as a nearby standard size. Canon U.S.A. gives another example: an 8 × 10-inch print at 300 DPI calls for at least 2400 × 3000 pixels. Treat 300 as a practical target rather than a pass/fail threshold; source quality, viewing distance, resampling and the output process also matter. Read Canon Canada’s resolution guide.
Image PPI and printer DPI measure different things. PPI here describes how many image pixels are fitted into each inch of the print; printer DPI describes how the device places ink dots. A printer’s maximum DPI is not the image’s pixel resolution or a stand-alone score of print quality. Epson’s UK guide says that output above roughly 240–300 printer DPI is nearly invisible at normal viewing distances, but that manufacturer guidance should not be confused with a source-image requirement.

Estimate a suitable print size
Use each image dimension separately: print width ≈ pixel width ÷ 300; print height ≈ pixel height ÷ 300. For example, a 2400 × 3000-pixel file gives roughly 8 × 10 inches at 300 pixels per inch. If you print larger, preview or proof the image at the intended viewing distance; a large print viewed from farther away may not need the same pixel density as a small print viewed close up.
What should you compare before buying?
Compare models against the same planned use. Confirm regional specifications and the paper-and-printer combination rather than assuming a feature applies to every media type.
