The right photo printer depends first on the largest print you plan to make, then on how often you print and whether you need scanning or document features. This guide groups nine models by use case rather than claiming they were tested side by side: the cited reviews do not apply one consistent test method to all nine. Model availability and names can also vary by region.
Choose by print size, volume, and workflow
- Start with format. A compact snapshot printer, a home printer for family photos, and a 17-inch fine-art printer solve different problems. What the ink system and print quality mean in practice
Cartridges or refillable tanks
Cartridge printers can make sense when you print infrequently, but RTINGS warns that low-yield cartridges can become costly with frequent printing. Tank systems mean less frequent refilling according to Epson, but that alone does not establish a lower cost for every owner. Compare the exact replacement ink, expected print volume, and compatible paper for the model you are considering.

Ink and paper are part of the output
Photo quality is a combination of printer, ink, media, and settings. A printer’s maximum format tells you what size it can handle; it does not by itself establish color accuracy, detail, or how it will render on a particular paper. Check whether your intended glossy, matte, heavier, or fine-art media is supported and follow the printer’s recommended settings.
Epson says its EcoTank Photo models use six-color photographic dye ink. Epson also reports, citing Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc. tests of its latest EcoTank Photo Claria inks, more than 75 years for color prints and more than 100 years for black-and-white prints. How to narrow the shortlist before buying
- Write down your largest likely print. If you do not need wide-format output, a 17-inch professional model may add expense and bulk without helping your usual prints.
- Decide whether this is an occasional or regular workflow. For occasional family pictures, prioritize a sensible purchase cost and straightforward operation. For frequent printing, investigate ink yield and refill or cartridge costs for the exact model.
- Choose standalone or multifunction deliberately. Pay for scanning, document printing, or direct-print workflows only if you will use them; otherwise a photo-focused design may be a better fit.
- Check your media and connection needs. Confirm supported paper sizes and types, plus the mobile or computer connection you intend to use.
