To reduce accessory-related risk, choose a product made for your exact phone model, keep every camera opening and nearby sensor clear, and follow the phone maker’s advice. A protector adds another surface in the camera’s optical path, so it may affect image quality; flare can also occur without an accessory because of reflections inside the camera.
What lens flare is—and what an accessory can change
Lens flare and ghosting are bright spots, arcs, halos, or washed-out areas that can appear when a camera faces a strong light source. They result from light scattering or reflecting within the optical system, and their presence alone does not mean the camera is defective. Huawei describes flare involving reflections in the camera lens and rear-cover glass; Xiaomi explains arc-shaped flare as repeated reflections between camera lenses. Canon’s overview of lens coatings explains how reflections at lens surfaces can produce ghosts and flare, and how coatings can reduce those reflections. These explanations describe general optical behavior, not how often a particular phone or accessory will flare.

A camera protector places an additional surface in front of the lens. That surface may affect image quality, but this does not mean every protector always causes flare. Manufacturer cautions are specific to their products: Samsung warns that unauthorized film covering a Galaxy camera lens may diminish image quality, while Huawei’s flare troubleshooting advises avoiding non-original protective cases or lens film. Neither statement establishes that all third-party accessories have the same effect.

What to check before buying a case or lens protector
- Exact phone model: Confirm that the accessory is designed for your specific model, not merely a phone in the same product family. Camera layouts and nearby sensors can differ.
- Clear openings: Check that the case’s camera cutout and any protector leave every camera aperture unobstructed. Make sure nearby sensors are not covered, either.
- Extra optical surfaces: A separate glass or film protector adds material over the camera’s optical path. Consider whether you need that layer and check the phone maker’s guidance before choosing it.
- Model-specific advice: Huawei warns against non-original cases or lens film as a troubleshooting measure for flare on applicable phones. Samsung’s warning concerns unauthorized films on Galaxy camera lenses. These are manufacturer-specific cautions, not a universal verdict on all accessories.
Huawei also notes that, on applicable phones with protruding lenses, film over a lens or a non-official case can block a nearby sensor. Check the guidance for your own phone rather than assuming that a cutout that looks clear from the front leaves every sensor unobstructed.

How to troubleshoot flare in photos
- Clean the camera surface. If the lens cover or protector may have fingerprints or oil on it, wipe it with a clean, soft cloth. A cloth can remove smudges; it cannot eliminate internal reflections or flare caused by a bright light source. See Huawei’s flare troubleshooting guidance.
- Change the composition. Move the phone or adjust its angle slightly, avoid pointing directly at a strong light when practical, or recompose so the light is outside the frame. Small changes can alter reflections and reduce visible flare. Xiaomi, Huawei, and Sony describe flare or ghosting in strong-light situations; Sony’s guidance applies to the Xperia products listed on its support page, which was updated August 25, 2026. - Check for obstruction. Inspect the case opening, lens cover, and nearby sensor area. If your phone reports that the area around its rear cameras is covered, consult its model-specific guidance; Huawei explains this warning for applicable phones at its sensor-obstruction support page.
- Compare with and without the accessory. Take one photo with the accessory installed and another without it, keeping the phone, camera, framing, and lighting as similar as possible. If flare changes, the accessory may be contributing, although this simple comparison is not a published phone-specific test standard. Nikon likewise recommends testing without a filter when investigating ghosting; its guidance concerns general camera use: Nikon’s ghosting advice.
Can a lens hood or protector solve the problem?
A lens hood can block stray light coming from outside the frame on conventional cameras, but it cannot block all stray light in real-world use, as explained by Cambridge in Colour. A conventional lens hood is not a universal solution for a phone case: phone camera layouts vary, and the sources do not establish a hood-style accessory that prevents flare across phones.
Similarly, a lens protector is not a universal flare fix. There is no controlled comparison here of named case or protector models, and no evidence that one material or brand is flare-proof. Choose based on fit, unobstructed camera and sensor areas, and your phone maker’s specific guidance rather than a promise to eliminate flare.
