These checks can help establish where a file came from and whether it matches a signed release; they cannot prove the program is free of vulnerabilities or malicious code. “Open source” makes source code available under the project’s terms—it is not a safety certification for every download bearing the project’s name.
1. Find the project’s real home
Locate the project’s canonical repository through its official website or documentation. Check that the repository owner, project history, release page, and links between the project’s properties make sense. A familiar name in a search result, tutorial, video description, mirror, or unrelated download site is not enough to establish that the file is genuine.

For yt-dlp, the project repository is github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp. This is a concrete example, not evidence that every video downloader uses the same release or verification process.

2. Choose an installation route the project documents
Read the project’s own installation instructions and use a route it documents for your operating system and software-management setup. yt-dlp documents release binaries, pip, and third-party package managers; its repository also identifies recommended standalone binaries and release files. A package manager or mirror is not automatically official simply because the software is open source: check whether the project itself lists or endorses that route.

A tutorial can help explain installation, but follow its links back to the project’s documented distribution channel before downloading. In a 2024 study, Rei Yamagishi, Shota Fujii, and Tatsuya Mori collected 14,363 videos from 2023-12-20 through 2024-04-30 (UTC+9) while studying deceptive installation guides for illicit software and game cheats that distributed information-stealing malware. The study did not measure video-downloader searches, so it is a reason to scrutinize tutorial links—not a downloader-specific estimate of risk. Read the study.
3. Verify release files when the project supports it
Some projects publish hashes and signed checksum lists; many do not. If signed checksums are available, use the project’s documented procedure rather than relying on a hash copied from the same untrusted download page as the binary.
- Get the files from the documented release location. Download the artifact you intend to use along with the checksum list and its signature, if the project publishes them.
- Obtain the public key through a separately trusted project channel. A key supplied only next to a file from an untrusted source does not independently establish that source’s identity.
- Verify the signature on the checksum list. This checks that the list was signed by the key you chose to trust.
- Compare the artifact’s digest with its entry in the authenticated list. Stop if the signature or comparison fails. Do not disable checks or ignore a mismatch to make installation proceed.
The yt-dlp repository publishes SHA-256 and SHA-512 checksum files with corresponding GPG signatures and documents commands for importing its public key and checking those signatures. Follow its current instructions at the official repository, because release guidance can change.

A hash by itself only shows whether a file matches the hash value you have. Verifying the signature adds evidence that the checksum list was signed by the key you trust. Together, these checks support integrity and provenance relative to that key and release channel; they are not a malware scan, code audit, or guarantee that the software has no security flaws.
4. Check updates and security advisories
Look at the release notes and security advisories for the version you have, then update using the project’s documented method. Do not leave a downloader on an old copy indefinitely, particularly when a project has issued a relevant security fix.
yt-dlp documents stable, nightly, and master channels. Its README describes nightly as its recommended channel for regular users; it says stable releases may lag behind changes on supported sites, while master can be more prone to bugs or regressions. The README also describes a mostly monthly stable-release schedule and an update warning for versions older than 90 days. These are yt-dlp operational details, not universal rules for other downloaders; check the live project documentation before choosing a channel or relying on a version-specific instruction. yt-dlp’s current release and update guidance.

5. Treat powerful options and account access carefully
Read what an option does before enabling features that execute commands, expand command strings, load configuration, accept arbitrary file extensions, or process untrusted metadata. yt-dlp’s documentation warns that its allow-unsafe-ext compatibility option can enable remote code execution. The project’s warning says: “This option can enable remote code execution! Consider opening an issue instead!” It also warns about restoring less-restricted command expansion behavior with allow-unsafe-exec-expansion. These warnings apply to yt-dlp’s options; do not assume other programs use the same names or behave the same way.
A downloader may need account cookies for a legitimate use case, but cookies and login credentials are sensitive. Avoid supplying them unless necessary, and understand how the application and any external downloader handle redirects. SingCERT reported a historical yt-dlp issue, CVE-2023-35934, in which cookies could be exposed during redirects to another host or when fragment hosts differed from the parent manifest. Its bulletin says the issue affected versions before 2023.07.06 and nightly 2023.07.06.185519, and identifies yt-dlp 2023.07.06 and nightly 2023.07.06.185519 as fixes. This is a version-specific historical example, not evidence that current releases remain vulnerable. SingCERT’s 12 July 2023 advisory.
6. Handle downloads as untrusted files
- Keep the downloader and any tools it uses to handle media updated.
- Save files to an ordinary folder controlled by your user account rather than granting unnecessary elevated access.
- Do not run or open an unexpected executable merely because it arrived through a downloader.
- Be cautious with files from unknown sources. A successful download does not show that the file is harmless.
The cited project guidance and advisory do not establish a universal scanning product or guarantee that a particular video container is safe. No single check here replaces careful handling of files from unknown sources.
What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Canonical repository and documented install route | Evidence that you are using a distribution path associated with the named project. | That every mirror, tutorial link, or third-party package is project-controlled, or that the program is vulnerability-free. |
| Signed checksum list plus matching artifact hash | That the artifact matches an entry in a checksum list signed by the key you trust. | That the signing key or release channel is trustworthy without your having established that trust; that the code has been audited or contains no malicious behavior. |
| Release notes and security advisories | Information about known fixes and project guidance for the versions and issues described. | That no undisclosed or newly discovered vulnerability exists. |
No broad figure has been established here for what share of open-source downloaders are safe, how common malware is in downloader search results, or how much risk signatures reduce. Judge a specific project and release by its verifiable distribution, integrity, and security practices rather than treating “open source” as a blanket guarantee.
