Before booking or ordering, compare the full fee and return terms, how the stylist learns about your fit and preferences, how much control you have over orders, and whether the service covers your location.
Start with the kind of help you need
“Personal styling” can mean several different things. A service that sends a box of clothes is not necessarily a substitute for someone who can sort through your wardrobe, and an outfit recommendation may not include either of those.

- Help choosing an item or outfit: Look for product recommendations, outfit ideas, or a short appointment focused on a particular occasion or purchase.
- A wardrobe reset: Ask for a closet consultation that addresses what to keep, alter, or donate, rather than an appointment focused on selecting new pieces.
- Advice from a distance: Digital recommendations, video appointments, and style boards can provide guidance without an in-person visit. Confirm what interaction is included.
- Clothes delivered to try: A curated delivery can be useful if you want to assess fit and style at home. Check the fee, delivery schedule, and return process before placing an order.
Nordstrom describes product-page styling videos, digital outfit recommendations, Style Boards, and in-store or virtual appointments, as well as in-home appointments and closet consultations near selected stores. The formats and availability are described in its styling services overview; verify current details with Nordstrom.
Compare the service terms, not just the headline offer
A complimentary appointment or a low introductory fee does not by itself tell you the total cost. Check when a charge applies, whether it is refundable or credited toward a purchase, whether there is a minimum or gift-card requirement, and what happens to the fee if you return everything.

| Service example | What it offers | Published fee or terms | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nordstrom to You | In-home help choosing an item, outfit, or wardrobe; a separate closet consultation covers what to keep, alter, or donate. | Nordstrom lists $50 for a styling appointment of up to one hour and $300 for a closet consultation of up to three hours. The fee is covered by a Nordstrom gift card usable for Nordstrom purchases or alterations. | U.S. service is listed for a home, office, or hotel within 15 miles of selected Nordstrom stores. | Stitch Fix | A profile-based Fix delivery selected with a human stylist, with optional scheduling and an on-demand order option. | Stitch Fix Support says shipping and returns are free. After the first Fix, the styling fee is $20 per shipment and is credited toward items kept in that order; the fee is non-refundable and cannot be transferred or rolled over. Keeping five or more items brings a stated 20% discount on the entire purchase, subject to the page’s terms. | These are Stitch Fix Support terms checked in 2026; confirm current terms and any promotions at checkout. Its pricing page has also surfaced the claims that a subscription is not required and Freestyle shopping has no styling fee, but that page was not directly accessible for verification. The examples are not directly comparable on price alone: one describes appointment-based help and a gift-card payment structure, while the other describes per-shipment styling and clothing returns. Compare the terms that apply to the service you plan to use, including item prices and any charges not covered by a styling fee.
Check how the stylist will understand your needs
Useful advice depends on whether the service gets enough context to make relevant suggestions. Find out how you can explain your size, fit preferences, budget, lifestyle, preferred stores, and the specific problem you want solved. Ask whether you can add notes before a session or shipment and give feedback afterward.

Stitch Fix says its style quiz gathers information about size, fit preferences, style, lifestyle, and budget. Its account instructions explain the intake process: How to create an account. For any provider, ask whether the stylist can work with clothes you already own, source from retailers you prefer, or focus on a particular need such as work outfits or an event.

Understand your control over appointments and deliveries
An appointment-based service and a clothing-delivery service give you different kinds of control. Before signing up, establish whether a visit or shipment is one-time or recurring, whether you choose its timing, and how to pause, reschedule, or cancel. Stitch Fix says customers can order Fixes on demand or choose a schedule; its support page explains the ordering model and associated terms.
For a delivered selection, also check the return window, how to send back unwanted items, and whether shipping or returns cost extra. For an in-person or virtual appointment, confirm what the session includes and whether you are expected to purchase anything.
Confirm availability and practical fit
Service areas can be limited even when a company offers online help nationally. Nordstrom to You describes its in-home service as available within 15 miles of selected Nordstrom stores, so check whether your address qualifies rather than assuming all stores or regions are covered. For virtual or delivery options, verify service availability for your location and any regional differences in terms.
Rank #4
Company pages explain what each company says it offers; they do not establish a universal credential standard or prove that one service produces better results. If credentials or a particular kind of experience matter to you, ask the individual stylist about relevant work and request examples related to your goals.
