Choose Spotify when the exact game soundtrack you want is available there and you want it in your existing Spotify library. The choice depends on the title, your memberships, and the features you value—not on a proven overall catalog-size winner. Spotify’s official announcement specifically names the game soundtracks for Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2; it does not establish the extent of Spotify’s full video game music catalog.
What is the difference between Nintendo Music and Spotify?
Nintendo Music is a Nintendo soundtrack service for active Nintendo Switch Online members. It focuses on Nintendo game music and offers tools tied to Nintendo games and play history. Spotify is a general music-streaming service; the official Spotify announcement cited here confirms a Nintendo game-music playlist with two named game soundtracks, but not a complete game-music catalog.

That distinction matters: Nintendo Music’s stated catalog count is for its own Nintendo-focused service, while Spotify’s announcement is about a specific playlist. Those figures and claims cannot establish which service has more video game music overall.
How do the services compare?
| What matters to you | What is established | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo game music and discovery | Nintendo describes a growing Nintendo catalog, recommendations based on Switch play history, playlists, spoiler hiding for selected soundtracks, and extensions for selected tracks. | Start with Nintendo Music, then confirm your game is in its catalog. |
| Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Galaxy 2 | Spotify’s April 24, 2026 announcement names the game soundtracks for both titles. | Spotify is a documented option for those releases; check that the playlist is currently available. |
| Listening offline | Nintendo says its mobile app supports downloads for offline listening. The sources reviewed do not establish comparable Spotify plan details or current app behavior. | Nintendo Music has an explicitly documented offline option. Verify Spotify’s current terms and app behavior if offline playback is essential. |
| Avoiding spoilers or finding music through play history | Nintendo documents spoiler hiding for selected soundtracks and recommendations based on Switch play history. | Prefer Nintendo Music if those features matter and your desired game is available. |
| Avoiding an additional membership | Nintendo Music requires Nintendo Switch Online. The sources reviewed do not provide a current, region-specific price comparison with Spotify. | Check local terms and consider any memberships you already pay for. |
| The widest game soundtrack selection | The reviewed Spotify announcement names two game soundtracks; Nintendo describes its own Nintendo-only catalog. Neither establishes a complete cross-service inventory. | Search for the exact game on both services. |
What does Nintendo Music include?
Nintendo says its U.S. service currently offers over 250 hours spanning more than 130 titles (Nintendo, 2026). This is Nintendo’s dynamic service claim, not an independently audited catalog count. The library can change as soundtracks are added. Nintendo of Canada’s undated how-to page, accessed in 2026, gives Animal Crossing: New Horizons as an example with 407 tracks; that example is not a comparison with Spotify or a guarantee that the listing will remain unchanged.

Nintendo documents several ways to browse and listen:
- Search by game, track, playlist, or screenshot.
- Use ready-made playlists, custom playlists, and “Top tracks” or “All tracks” views.
- Filter by original platform, the date a soundtrack was added to the app, or the original game’s release year.
- Get recommendations based on Switch play history, including a My Mix playlist based on that history.
- Hide spoilers for selected game soundtracks.
- Extend selected tracks to five, ten, fifteen, thirty, or sixty minutes.
- Adjust sound quality using Data saving, Balanced, or High quality settings. These are app settings, not evidence of a measured sound-quality advantage over Spotify.
Some functions are app-only. Nintendo says members can use the service on compatible smartphones, tablets, computers, and through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Mobile users can stream or download music for offline listening. A browser lets people inspect the library without membership, but an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the service. Nintendo says a Switch console is not necessary.

What Nintendo game music is confirmed on Spotify?
In an announcement dated April 24, 2026, Spotify introduced a “Nintendo Game Music Official Playlist” containing official game soundtracks from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. That verifies those named releases as announced on that date; it does not establish that every track remains available now, that they are licensed in every region, or that Spotify has—or lacks—other game soundtracks. Search Spotify for the exact game title and confirm the current listing before relying on it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSpotify also announced a separate playlist for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A movie soundtrack is not the same as a game soundtrack, so make sure the listing matches what you want. Spotify noted an in-app Luma playback-bar appearance for Premium subscribers in its announcement; that presentation feature does not change which game soundtrack is available.

- Search by exact game title on both services. Check that the listing is the game soundtrack, not music from a film, an arrangement, or an unrelated playlist.
- Check your access. Nintendo Music requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and Nintendo Account. Compare each service’s current local terms, especially if you already subscribe to one.
- Decide which listening features matter. Nintendo documents mobile offline downloads, spoiler hiding for selected soundtracks, and play-history recommendations. Confirm Spotify’s current plan and app details separately if you depend on a particular feature.
- Check availability where you live. Nintendo Music Support’s article, updated June 2, 2026, lists 47 named regions and says more may be added. Availability, catalog contents, trials, and subscription terms can change; check Nintendo’s current support information and membership terms for your country.
Does Nintendo Music require a Switch console?
No. Nintendo says an account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership are sufficient; the console itself is not required. Nintendo’s U.S. service page lists compatible smart devices, computers, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The service page also offers a seven-day trial subject to conditions, including automatic renewal unless canceled. Review the current terms for your region before starting a trial.
Which service should you use?
Pick Nintendo Music when the soundtrack you want is in its catalog and Nintendo-specific discovery, spoiler controls, or documented mobile downloads make a difference. Pick Spotify when it has the exact game soundtrack you want and keeping it with your existing Spotify listening is more useful to you. For the two Super Mario Galaxy games named in Spotify’s announcement, Spotify is a documented option. For other titles, verify the live catalog rather than assuming either service has them.
