To find what is reachable on devices you are authorized to assess, choose a network scanner that discovers hosts, scans ports, and actively fingerprints services and versions. Nmap’s service/version detection is a strong starting point: it probes discovered ports instead of assuming that a port number tells you which application is listening. If you also need recurring vulnerability checks, authenticated assessment, or a continuous outside-in view of public assets, evaluate an infrastructure vulnerability scanner or an external attack surface management (EASM) service. Those tools answer related but different questions.
What should a scanner tell you about an exposed service?
A port scan can show that a device responds on a port, but that alone does not prove which service or application is listening. Port assignments are conventions: applications can use unusual ports, and different services can share a port number. A scanner that merely labels ports from a registry can therefore miss or misidentify services.

For service identification, look for active fingerprinting. Nmap’s -sV option probes open ports and compares responses with service-matching rules to identify the protocol, application, and version where possible. Its version detection supports TCP and UDP; it can also attempt to identify services behind SSL/TLS when built with OpenSSL support. Some services do not disclose enough information for every field to be identified. See the Nmap version-detection documentation.
Version detection runs after a scan method finds ports. It is useful for building an inventory, but a version string is a clue—not proof that a system is vulnerable or exploitable.

Which kind of scanner fits your job?
| Your need | Scanner type | What it does and what to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Find live hosts, open ports, and service fingerprints | Network discovery or port scanner | Check host discovery, TCP and UDP coverage, active version detection, scan controls, output formats, IPv6 support, and operating-system needs. Nmap documents TCP/UDP service detection and adjustable probe intensity. Nmap documentation |
| Find common vulnerabilities across managed infrastructure | Infrastructure vulnerability scanner | Check asset coverage, vulnerability-check updates, authenticated scanning, reporting and export, remediation workflow, deployment reach, and licensing model. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) notes that many vendors charge by asset. NCSC guidance |
| Test custom HTTP/S applications for application-layer problems | Web application scanner | Look for login and session handling, crawl and test coverage, exclusions, safe handling of state-changing actions, and support for the application’s architecture. An infrastructure scanner is generally not a substitute for application-focused testing. NCSC guidance |
| Keep track of an internet-facing footprint | External attack surface management (EASM) service | Evaluate domain and IP discovery, service and technology identification, continuous monitoring, history, finding provenance and confidence, integrations, and false-positive handling. Features vary by product. NCSC EASM guidance |
| Scan isolated or sensitive internal networks | Scanner deployed on-premises or inside the relevant network | Confirm it can reach the segment, how scan data is handled, who maintains and updates it, and whether its capacity and scan windows suit the environment. NCSC notes that on-premises deployment can reach networks without external connectivity, but requires maintenance and may be less flexible to scale. NCSC guidance |
Nmap is a focused baseline for authorized network exploration and service identification. It is open source, runs on major computer operating systems, and is available in console and graphical forms. Its scripting engine can extend discovery and perform some vulnerability checks, but the project does not present Nmap as a comprehensive vulnerability scanner. Choose a dedicated vulnerability-management or web-application tool when those are the actual assessment goals. Nmap reference guide
How much service fingerprinting do you need?
Nmap lets you adjust the probes used for version detection. The intensity scale runs from 0 to 9, with a default of 7. Higher intensity tries more probes and may identify more services, at the cost of additional scan time. --version-light uses intensity 2 and is faster, but somewhat less likely to identify services; --version-all uses intensity 9 and tries every probe. These settings affect the identification phase, not whether a port scan has found a port. Details are in the official Nmap documentation.

- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester tests voice (RJ11/12), data (RJ45), and video (coax F-connector) terminated cables, providing clear results for comprehensive testing on unenergized Ethernet cables (not designed to test PoE)
- EXTENDED CABLE LENGTH MEASUREMENT: Measure cable length up to 2000 feet (610 m), allowing for precise cable length determination
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, or Split-Pair faults, ensuring thorough fault detection and identification
- BACKLIT LCD DISPLAY: Backlit LCD screen displays cable length, wiremap, cable ID, and test results, ensuring easy readability in various lighting conditions
- EFFICIENT CABLE TRACING: Trace cables, wire pairs, and individual conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (requires analog probe Cat. No. VDV500-123, sold separately), simplifying cable tracing tasks
For a first inventory, the default is a reasonable starting point. Use lighter probing when speed is more important, or stronger probing when identification gaps matter and the target environment can safely tolerate the additional activity. A higher intensity is not a guarantee of a complete or correct identification.

Choose infrastructure vulnerability scanning for managed systems
Use this category when the question is whether infrastructure has known weaknesses, missing patches, weak cryptography, exposed sensitive services, or configuration problems. Authenticated checks can reveal issues that an unauthenticated view cannot. Compare asset types covered, credential support, update cadence for checks, deployment reach, exports, and the workflow for assigning and tracking remediation. NCSC describes vulnerability scanning tools and services as options for identifying weaknesses across an organization’s systems. NCSC guidance

For example, Greenbone describes its OPENVAS SCAN appliance as supporting external, DMZ, and internal perspectives, with authenticated scanning able to reveal vulnerabilities in applications that are not network services. The vendor also says the appliance is not a dedicated web application security scanner. These are product-documentation claims, not an independent comparative evaluation. Greenbone OPENVAS SCAN
Choose EASM for a recurring outside-in view
EASM is intended to help organizations find and monitor internet-visible assets, including services they may not have in a complete asset register. Depending on the product, it may discover domains and IPs, identify technologies and exposures, retain history, and integrate with reporting or security workflows. It observes the public-facing footprint; it does not replace internal vulnerability scanning of systems that are not visible from the internet. NCSC outlines these possible capabilities and cautions that they differ across services. NCSC EASM guidance

Treat public asset-search platforms as discovery leads
CISA’s exposure-reduction guidance names Shodan, Censys, Thingful, and Shadowserver as examples of web-based platforms that can help identify internet-exposed assets. CISA explicitly says inclusion is not an endorsement. Such platforms can help with an outside-in search, but they are not a substitute for authorized internal scanning or validation of an asset’s status. CISA asset-inventory guidance
What should you compare before selecting a tool?
- Coverage: Which address ranges, asset types, protocols, ports, and service families are included? Can the tool discover devices missing from the existing asset register?
- Identification depth: Does it infer a service from a port number, or actively fingerprint the service and version? Can scan intensity be adjusted for the balance between identification and runtime?
- Assessment depth: Does it inventory exposure, check known vulnerabilities, support credentials, or test web application behavior? Avoid treating one function as a replacement for another.
- Viewpoint and deployment: Will scans run inside the network, outside the perimeter, or both? Can the scanner reach isolated segments? Where is scan data stored, and who maintains the deployment?
- Operations and safety: Can you set scan timing and intensity? What alerts or operational impact might scans trigger in the systems being assessed?
- Workflow and evidence: Can results be exported or integrated with vulnerability-management and ticketing processes? For recurring external monitoring, does the service retain history and explain finding provenance or confidence?
- Cost and scale: Establish the assets and coverage you need, then compare licensing, support, updates, and operating effort. NCSC notes that asset-based pricing is common among vulnerability-scanning vendors. NCSC guidance
How can you scan without disrupting systems?
Only scan systems you are authorized to assess. Agree on the scope, timing, and scan approach with asset owners and monitoring teams before starting. Scans can create security alerts or add latency; fragile devices, including some embedded and operational-technology systems, may be more susceptible to faults. NCSC advises organizations to account for these risks when planning vulnerability scanning. NCSC guidance

- Confirm the approved IP ranges, systems, and exclusions rather than assuming that every reachable address is in scope.
- Coordinate scan windows and monitoring so expected activity is not mistaken for an incident.
- Use an appropriately cautious scan profile for fragile or operationally critical systems, and confirm the approach with their owners.
- For authenticated checks, agree on credential handling and account policies to reduce the risk of lockouts.
What should you do when a scan finds an exposed service?
- Validate the finding. Confirm that the asset and service are real and in scope; investigate uncertain fingerprints rather than treating a label as definitive.
- Decide whether public access is necessary. If the service does not need to be internet-reachable, restrict access or remove the exposure. If it must remain public, reduce risk with measures such as patching, strong credentials, monitored access, and routine review. CISA asset-inventory guidance
- Verify any suspected vulnerability. A service’s version string can be incomplete or misleading, and vendors may backport security fixes without changing the apparent version in the way a scanner expects. Check vendor security information and, when appropriate, use authenticated checks, configuration evidence, or another reliable assessment method before declaring the issue a vulnerability. Nmap version-detection documentation
- Prioritize and track remediation. Consider the asset’s role and exposure, assign an owner, and record the evidence and follow-up needed to confirm the exposure has been addressed.
