The available public evidence does not show that India is cheaper overall, or that it has replaced China: there is no verified, like-for-like comparison of current per-unit cost, factory yield, or usable capacity. One reported estimate says duties and the shipping and storage of Chinese components add about 10% to manufacturing costs in India, but that is not an audited Apple figure or a full comparison of the two countries.
China and India compared
| Factor | China | India |
|---|---|---|
| Production footprint | Apple identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location in its supply-chain disclosure. | Reporting describes an expanding Apple manufacturing base, but does not establish that it has displaced China’s footprint. |
| Supplier ecosystem | China has an established production ecosystem. The sources do not quantify its current capacity or supplier share. | Suppliers and manufacturing infrastructure are growing. Reporting also describes challenges in transferring established practices and subassembly capability. |
| Component logistics and duties | The reported India cost estimate concerns components shipped from China, rather than a complete China-versus-India cost breakdown. | A reported estimate attributes about 10% added manufacturing cost to customs duties and shipping and storage of components from China; it is not an audited or all-in cost comparison. |
| Incentives and exports | The cited sources do not provide a comparable China incentive or export figure. | India’s production-linked incentives and supplier infrastructure are part of its smartphone manufacturing expansion. Reported export values show activity, not installed capacity. |
| Resilience and diversification | An established base can support scale, but reliance on one concentrated production ecosystem carries supply-chain exposure. | Adding production in India can diversify manufacturing, although the sources do not quantify the resulting resilience or its cost. |
This is a qualitative comparison, not a factory scorecard. Apple describes supplier standards and risk-review processes, while the reporting on India highlights the complexity of reproducing established production practices. The cited material does not supply comparable country-level figures for unit cost, yield, or capacity.

Is it cheaper to make iPhones in India or China?
The available evidence does not establish which country has the lower total cost per iPhone. A cost comparison would need more than wages: it would have to account for labor and productivity, yields, capital, supplier prices, incentives, duties, and the cost of moving components. No comparable current total-cost series or audited per-unit figure for China and India is provided in the cited material.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Information reported that customs duties and the cost of shipping and storing components from China together add about 10% to iPhone manufacturing costs in India. The estimate was attributed to people familiar with the matter; it was not published by Apple as an audited metric. It describes those India-related logistics and duty costs, not a finding that Indian-made iPhones cost 10% more overall. It also does not compare the full production cost of an equivalent phone made in China.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
That distinction matters because assembly is only one part of production. If a factory relies on components or subassemblies shipped from elsewhere, duties and logistics affect its economics; developing local suppliers and production capabilities may change that picture over time. The cited sources discuss those dependencies and transfer challenges, but do not quantify a current net cost advantage for either country.
Why China’s manufacturing base is difficult to replicate
Apple identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location and publishes information about supplier standards and risk processes. Reporting on India’s expansion describes the effort involved in transferring established manufacturing practices and building subassembly capability. Those are signs that the comparison is about a connected supplier ecosystem, not simply the cost of hiring assembly workers.

A supplier network can support components and subassemblies close to final assembly, along with production routines already used at scale. The cited evidence does not quantify the size or exact composition of China’s iPhone ecosystem, so it cannot support a numerical claim about how much faster or cheaper that network makes production. It does support the narrower point that India’s suppliers and processes are still scaling and that replicating established practices can be difficult.
What India’s expansion shows—and what it does not
India’s production growth is meaningful evidence of diversification, but reported exports and expansion plans are not the same as installed factory capacity or output available for a particular iPhone model.

The Indian Express reported that Indian smartphone exports were around $15 billion in 2023–24, with iPhones contributing about 65%, or around $10 billion. These are period-specific export values reported in 2024. They do not measure Apple’s total global output, current capacity, or the number of iPhones India can make compared with China.
The Indian Express also described production-linked incentives and supplier infrastructure as factors in India’s smartphone manufacturing expansion. These policies and investments can support scale-up and attract suppliers, but they do not by themselves demonstrate that an iPhone made in India currently has a lower total cost.

What the iPhone 17 planning report says
In an October 29, 2024 report, The Information said Apple tapped India to build a new iPhone model from the ground up, describing planned iPhone 17 production and replication at a China site. This is evidence of manufacturing planning at that time, not an audited allocation for current production. It does not establish that all iPhone 17 variants—or all models—are made in both countries.

What can be concluded about capacity and risk
The evidence supports a directional distinction: China is the mature, established production base, while India is an expanding location that can diversify Apple’s manufacturing footprint. It does not establish which country has greater total usable capacity by a known amount, nor does it provide a verified current capacity share or yield comparison.
For Apple, adding a second production location can reduce dependence on a single concentrated base. The tradeoff is that scale and resilience depend on supplier readiness, component sourcing, and the ability to transfer production processes—not just on opening assembly lines. The sources support the diversification rationale, but do not put a number on the resilience gained or the cost of achieving it.
