Choose a NAS for Plex or Jellyfin by first deciding what your devices will need the server to do. A NAS that can store and deliver media may still be too weak to transcode it. If your clients can direct-play your files, storage and network needs may matter more; if you expect conversion, validate the exact NAS model, software installation path, and hardware-acceleration support for your codecs.
Start with your playback needs, not the number of drive bays
Direct play sends a compatible media file to a client without converting its video. Transcoding converts media to suit a client’s format, resolution, bitrate, or other constraints, and it places a much heavier load on the server. Plex identifies processor capability as a major limitation on many NAS devices; Jellyfin likewise cautions that some prebuilt NAS appliances have weak processors or challenging software environments. A large drive capacity does not tell you whether a NAS can transcode.

Whether a stream needs conversion depends on the playback situation. Jellyfin says a client reports supported codecs, resolutions, bitrate, and other constraints, after which the server selects a suitable output. Plex also identifies incompatible content, remote or shared access, and subtitle burn-in as reasons a stream may need transcoding. See Jellyfin’s transcoding documentation and Plex’s NAS limitations guidance.

- List the televisions, phones, browsers, and other devices that will play from the server.
- Note the media formats each device supports and whether subtitles may need to be burned into video.
- Separate local viewing from remote viewing, and consider whether remote bandwidth will require a lower-bitrate stream.
- Estimate how many streams may run at once, and which are likely to direct-play versus transcode.
This inventory reveals whether you need a NAS primarily for storage and file delivery or one with enough processing capability for conversion. Do not infer transcoding ability from bay count or disk capacity.

Check the exact NAS model and software route
Compatibility is model-specific. Before buying, look up the exact device and confirm both that your chosen server can be installed and maintained on its operating system and that its processor or media engine can handle the workload you expect.
For Plex
Search the Plex NAS compatibility list for your model and review its hardware-accelerated streaming support. Plex describes the list as a general guide, not a guarantee for every firmware, server package, or codec combination. Also verify that Plex Media Server can be installed on the NAS’s current software and that the device supports the media formats you expect to use. Plex notes that transcoding is disabled on some low-power NAS devices, primarily certain ARM-based devices, in its NAS limitations article.

Check the processor and media engine, then confirm that Jellyfin can be installed and kept updated in the NAS’s operating environment. Jellyfin warns that third-party software can be difficult to install on prebuilt NAS appliances, and that some low-end CPU families may be problematic. Its documentation lists Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Linux VA-API, Apple Video Toolbox, and Rockchip RKMPP among documented hardware-acceleration methods, with platform-specific requirements and limits. Verify the whole transcoding path
A label such as “hardware transcoding supported” is not enough to establish that a NAS can handle every conversion you need. Decoding, scaling, tone-mapping, and encoding are separate stages; a hardware engine may accelerate some formats or stages but not others. Jellyfin notes that unsupported stages can fall back to software, increasing CPU use or slowing conversion. Codec, bit depth, drivers, operating system, server version, and container configuration all affect the result.
- Match the NAS’s processor or media engine to the codecs and bit depths in your library.
- Check the acceleration method and driver availability for the NAS operating system and intended installation method.
- Consider whether your likely streams require scaling or tone-mapping as well as decoding and encoding.
- Confirm Plex model compatibility or Jellyfin’s platform-specific acceleration requirements for the exact device and software combination.
Plex’s compatibility list is useful for screening, but Plex calls it a general guide. Jellyfin’s documentation explains that acceleration may be partial. Neither a broad GPU label nor a list entry alone establishes performance for every workload.

- Note:The eSATA port on this product does not support the use of a computer’s SATA-to-eSATA adapter. Hot-swapping is not supported. The computer’s eSATA port must support RAID functionality to properly access multiple drive bays via the eSATA port; otherwise, only one drive bay can be accessed.

Size storage, memory, network, and service separately
Once you have accounted for compute, choose usable storage capacity and an expansion path that fit the library. Then check the network and any recommended system resources. These factors affect capacity and delivery, but they do not substitute for a capable transcoding setup.
Jellyfin’s published general recommendations
Jellyfin’s living hardware-selection documentation, accessed in 2026, recommends the following for a general deployment; treat them as project guidance rather than universal minimums for every NAS or media library:
Best Value
- Direct-attached storage device via USB Type-C for Windows, macOS and Linux
- Use the TR-004 as external storage for NAS backup
- Expand the capacity of your QNAP NAS
- 4 x 3.5-inch SATA 3Gb/s (Diskless)
- Hardware RAID supports RAID 0, 1, 5, JBOD, and individual disks
| Resource | Jellyfin recommendation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet | Gigabit Ethernet or faster | Jellyfin recommends a wired server connection; it does not recommend Wi-Fi or powerline for the server. |
| SSD | 100 GB | Recommended for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache. |
| Memory | At least 8 GB | Recommended for an average deployment, not stated as a universal minimum for every setup. |
| Upload for remote access | At least 20 Mbps | A Jellyfin recommendation; actual remote playback depends on stream bitrate and network conditions. |
| Upload allocation | Limit Jellyfin to 70% of total upload when total upload is under 100 Mbps | A suggested Jellyfin limit, not a measured performance guarantee. |
These recommendations come from Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guide. In particular, remote upload capacity should be compared with the bitrate of the streams your users will actually request.
Compare candidate NAS devices on the same criteria
When you have two or more exact models in mind, compare them against the same workload rather than choosing by storage capacity alone.
| Decision area | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Media processing | Processor generation, hardware codec support, Plex compatibility status, and Jellyfin acceleration method and driver availability. |
| Installation and upkeep | Whether Plex or Jellyfin has a workable installation route, the NAS operating-system constraints, and how you will update and troubleshoot the server. |
| Stream workload | Expected concurrent streams, direct-play versus transcode use, local versus remote viewing, client limits, and subtitle handling. |
| Storage | Drive bays, usable capacity, and expansion options. These address library size, not transcoding performance. |
| Network | Wired link speed and available upload capacity for remote viewers. |
| Total cost | NAS, drives, necessary memory or storage upgrades, and—if using Plex hardware acceleration—the applicable Plex Pass cost. |
No model-by-model benchmark, current price, or definitive best NAS is established here. Before selecting a specific product, verify its exact SKU, CPU or media engine, installed memory, operating-system release, app installation route, and current Plex or Jellyfin compatibility for your intended workload.

Choose based on the job the NAS must do
If your clients can direct-play your library, prioritize sufficient usable storage, a reliable wired network, and a workable Plex or Jellyfin installation. If clients or remote conditions will often force transcoding, treat the NAS’s processor, supported codecs, drivers, and software environment as core requirements. Validate the exact device and the entire conversion path before buying; storage capacity alone cannot answer whether it will transcode your media.
