How to Choose a Multimodal AI Model for Robotics, Video, and Vision

Choose a multimodal AI model by its output and deployment role: visual interpretation, embodied reasoning, or robot action generation. Then validate input, timing, embodiment fit, and safety on the target system.

Choose a multimodal model by the job it must do, not by the label “vision AI.” A video or vision-language model (VLM) can interpret images, video, or spatial relationships; a vision-language-action (VLA) model is built to turn visual observations and instructions into robot actions. For many systems, the useful design is a reasoning model that calls a separate robot policy or API—not one model expected to perceive, plan, and control safely on its own.

First decide what the model must produce

Write down the required output before comparing model names. The distinction matters because understanding a scene is not the same capability as controlling a robot.

  • Describe or answer: Identify objects, summarize a camera feed, or answer questions about a scene. A general video-language model may fit.
  • Reason about space or progress: Interpret spatial relationships, locate an event in a video, or estimate whether a task is progressing. An embodied reasoning model may fit.
  • Choose and execute robot actions: Convert camera observations and an instruction into control outputs. Look for a VLA or another policy with an explicit action interface for the target robot.
  • Combine these jobs: A reasoning model can orchestrate tools or call a separate policy, but the interfaces, handoffs, and failure behavior need to be designed and tested explicitly.

A model’s documented ability to answer video questions does not establish that it can produce valid robot actions, meet a control loop’s timing, or operate safely.

How the main model roles differ

Role Typical output What to verify
Vision-language model (VLM) Descriptions, answers, classifications, or other interpretations of visual input Supported image or video format, whether input is a clip or live stream, and how results reach downstream software
Embodied reasoning model Spatial or temporal reasoning, task-progress judgments, or tool orchestration Supported tasks and endpoints; whether it emits an action or instead calls another component
Vision-language-action model (VLA) Robot actions conditioned on visual observations and language instructions Robot embodiment, camera setup, action representation, calibration, adaptation needs, and control-loop performance

These are practical roles, not mutually exclusive product categories. A system can chain a VLM or embodied reasoning model to a VLA, but that composition adds interface and reliability questions of its own.

Examples that illustrate the trade-offs

Gemini Robotics ER 2: embodied reasoning and video understanding

Google describes Gemini Robotics ER 2 as a vision-language model for embodied reasoning, spatial reasoning, video understanding, multi-step tool orchestration, and multi-robot coordination. Its documentation distinguishes a standard preview from a streaming preview; Google describes the streaming variant as intended for low-latency continuous audio/video input. The existence of a streaming endpoint is not a guarantee of end-to-end latency for a particular robot or network.

Google documents video tasks including moment finding—locating a key event—and progress classification into five completion brackets. The feature guide specifies ER 2 for video understanding. These are useful capabilities for monitoring or checking task progress, but they do not by themselves establish direct action control. Google’s documentation says ER 1.6 was deprecated on August 31, 2026. Preview status, endpoint names, and availability can change, so check the provider’s current documentation before integrating.

OpenVLA: an open action-generating example

OpenVLA’s model card describes a 7-billion-parameter open VLA trained on 970,000 robot manipulation episodes from Open X-Embodiment. Its documented path takes language instructions and camera images and generates robot actions. The card describes out-of-the-box control for represented robots and parameter-efficient adaptation. That does not mean every robot is supported without changes: check whether the target embodiment and action conventions match. The model card identifies an MIT license, and its code examples assume CUDA execution.

NVIDIA Jetson Platform Services: local video-model deployment

NVIDIA’s Jetson Platform Services documentation describes RTSP video-stream querying and alerts using VILA and LLaVA-family models. For the configurations listed in that service, storage requirements range from 7.1 GB for VILA-2.7B to 32.3 GB for VILA1.5-13B. Those are service-specific listed model storage figures, not universal system-memory requirements; the total hardware needs depend on the model, inference stack, and workload. NVIDIA recommends Jetson Orin Nano Super as an entry point for local AI and early robotics prototypes, not as a requirement for every deployment.

Compare candidates against the actual deployment

Use the same checklist for each candidate. A model that looks capable in a demonstration may still be a poor fit if it cannot accept the camera feed, produce the required interface, or meet the system’s operational constraints.

  1. Match the role to the output. Specify whether you need a description, detection, spatial judgment, progress estimate, tool call, or control action. Reject a video question-answering model as a robot policy unless its action capability is documented.
  2. Trace the complete input path. Record the camera format and resolution, preprocessing, sampling rate, clip length or streaming mode, and how observations reach the model. Confirm continuous streaming separately from support for uploaded clips or individual frames.
  3. Measure timing in context. Measure end-to-end latency under the actual control loop, camera pipeline, network conditions, and system load. For a live stream, confirm how frequently observations are processed and how stale results are handled. A provider’s “low-latency” description is not a measured result for your setup.
  4. Check embodiment and action conventions. Compare supported robot types, camera placement, calibration assumptions, action representation, and gripper or joint conventions. Determine whether the model controls the robot directly or needs an adapter, fine-tuning, or a separate controller.
  5. Budget adaptation and operations. Compare required data and compute, hosted versus local deployment, storage, throughput, network dependence, monitoring, versioning, and applicable provider terms. For local inference, size the entire inference stack on the target hardware rather than using model storage alone.
  6. Test task performance under representative conditions. Use trials that reflect the intended task and include occlusion, lighting changes, unexpected objects, failures, and recovery. Compare results only when robot, task, data, and evaluation conditions align; vendor benchmark claims from different setups do not form a shared leaderboard.

Choose a system pattern, not just a model

For inspection, alerts, or video summaries

Start with a video-capable VLM if the system needs to answer questions about a feed, identify events, or issue alerts. Confirm whether the service accepts the intended RTSP stream or other camera input and whether it operates continuously or processes selected frames or clips. If an alert triggers physical action, treat that downstream control path as a separate system to validate.

For task monitoring or scene-level reasoning

Consider an embodied reasoning model when the application needs spatial interpretation, event localization, progress classification, or tool orchestration. Define what happens when the model is uncertain, returns an unusable result, or loses track of the task. A coarse progress label may support monitoring, but it is not proof that a robot completed a task correctly.

For manipulation or direct robot control

Evaluate a VLA against the actual robot embodiment, sensors, action interface, and task. Confirm that outputs can be translated into the robot’s expected commands and that a non-generative control layer enforces motion limits. If adapting an open model, include the data collection and validation effort in the project plan.

For a combined reasoning-and-control system

Assign clear responsibilities: for example, a reasoning model can interpret the scene or select a tool, while a robot policy generates actions and an independent controller enforces limits. Specify the message format, allowed tools, timeout behavior, and recovery path at every handoff. Do not assume that tool orchestration alone supplies a safe or reliable control architecture.

Safety and validation belong outside model claims

A multimodal model’s output is not a safety guarantee. Keep safety constraints and emergency behavior in independently enforced parts of the robot system, and test the complete pipeline rather than only the model response.

  • Constrain permissible motion and enforce limits in the controller or other independent mechanism.
  • Use interlocks and independent perception or control checks where the task warrants them.
  • Define a fallback for missing, delayed, ambiguous, or invalid model output, including human escalation where appropriate.
  • Test failure cases and recovery behavior on the target robot before deployment.

Google’s announcement describes an agentic-safety benchmark, but the documented material here does not establish that any of these models is certified for safety-critical control. Treat benchmark results as evidence about their stated evaluation, not as a substitute for system-level safety validation.

What the evidence does—and does not—settle

The examples establish distinct documented capabilities: Gemini Robotics ER 2 for embodied reasoning and specified video tasks, OpenVLA as an open action-generating model with a stated training dataset, and NVIDIA’s Jetson service for local RTSP video-model workflows. They do not establish a neutral, same-task ranking across the field or prove performance on a particular robot. There is no supported universal winner; the right choice depends on the required output, deployment conditions, and results in representative trials.
