Choose by the work your app must do: which media it accepts and returns, whether it needs streaming or a standard request-and-response flow, whether it generates or analyzes media, and how it handles stored data and cloud deployment. Then compare the finalists on the same workload and calculate cost from current rate cards.
What “multimodal” means for an API choice
Multimodal is not a guarantee that every model or endpoint accepts and returns the same media. A model may accept images but return text; audio or video generation may require a separate model or service. Check input and output support separately for the specific model and API surface you plan to use.

OpenAI’s model catalog lists models with text and image input and text output, as well as separate audio, realtime, image, and video-generation offerings. Google’s Gemini API uses generateContent for content generation and points to specialized media services such as Imagen and Veo. Those documented product shapes identify what to investigate, not which provider will perform best for your task. See the OpenAI model catalog and Gemini API reference.
Which API fits each workload?
Use this as a shortlist, not a ranking. The documentation establishes available API patterns and capabilities; it does not establish comparative accuracy, latency, reliability, or cost for your application.
#1 Best Overall
- [Local AI Inference & 70B Model Ready] Equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8845HS processor, NEXUS is engineered for heavy local AI workloads. With a full-size GPU bay, it runs 70B LLMs natively without an internet connection. Ideal for AI developers and tech enthusiasts who need private environment for coding and model testing.
- [132TB Mass Storage with ZFS Integrity] Features a hybrid storage architecture (3×NVMe + 4×3.5" HDD) supporting up to 132TB. Utilizing the enterprise-grade ZFS file system and ECC memory, it prevents data corruption and bit rot—a must-have for professional photographers and video editors safeguarding 4K/8K RAW footage.
- [OpenClaw-Driven Automation Workflow] The built-in OpenClaw execution layer allows complex automated tasks to be processed locally. Even when offline, your backup schedules and AI file organization continue seamlessly. Say goodbye to monthly cloud subscriptions and high latency.
- [Dual 10GbE & USB4 Ultra-Connectivity] Experience server-class speeds with dual 10GbE ports and a 40Gbps USB4 interface. It enables multi-user real-time collaboration on large project files directly from the NAS, ensuring zero-lag editing for creative studios and production teams.
- [Open-Source ZimaOS for Total Privacy] Running on the fully open-source ZimaOS, NEXUS ensures your data stays physically on-premise with no backdoors. It acts as a "Digital Fortress" for privacy-conscious families and small businesses who demand absolute data sovereignty.

How to compare the APIs for your app
- Specify each request’s media. List the inputs—text, image, audio, or video—and the required output, such as text, audio, generated media, or structured data. Verify both directions in the live documentation for each candidate model.
- Choose the interaction pattern. Distinguish a single request and response from multi-turn state, low-latency streaming, and batch processing. A standard content-generation endpoint should not be assumed to provide the controls of a realtime interface.
- Separate understanding from generation. An image-understanding model is not necessarily an image generator. Confirm which specialized endpoint or model handles the generation task, and check its own limits and pricing.
- Map the data workflow and deployment. For a stored media collection, account for ingestion, embeddings, retrieval, transcripts, timestamps, and object storage. For cloud-bound workloads, confirm regional availability, permissions, endpoint features, data-handling terms, and cross-region behavior.
- Estimate the complete usage basket. Include each input modality, generated output, response length, caching, tools or grounding, retries, expected volume, and peak concurrency. Apply the current rate-card units for the precise model and tier; unlike units or omitted media-generation costs make headline-rate comparisons misleading.
- Run a controlled evaluation. Give every finalist the same representative files, prompts, success criteria, concurrency profile, and accounting window. Track task success, factual errors, missed media details, malformed outputs, latency distribution, and cost per successfully completed task.
What each platform’s documented API shape tells you
OpenAI API
The model catalog separates general models from dedicated realtime, audio, image, and video-generation offerings. Its Realtime API reference documents WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP interfaces and native speech-to-speech support, alongside text, image, and audio inputs and outputs. This makes the realtime surface a distinct candidate to assess when live voice is central; it does not establish a performance advantage. Pricing is model-specific, so use the current OpenAI API pricing for the selected model and inspect the applicable input-cost rules. The API platform page provides additional platform context.
Google Gemini API
Google documents generateContent as its standard content-generation endpoint and identifies specialized Gen Media endpoints, including Imagen and Veo. Its pricing page separates modality and tier, includes free and paid tiers for some listed models, and describes grounding charges. Eligibility and exact prices depend on model and tier; consult the live Gemini API pricing page for the option you intend to use.
Amazon Bedrock
AWS recommends bedrock-runtime for most new applications. Its documentation distinguishes Converse, a unified interface across models that support messages, from Invoke, which offers more direct model control and supports non-text modalities. It also describes Responses, Chat Completions, and Messages patterns, as well as bedrock-mantle for some feature surfaces. Support varies by endpoint and model; verify the exact combination in AWS’s API selection guidance and endpoint documentation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For multimodal knowledge bases, AWS documents additional setup and modality-specific behavior. Its guidance notes that Nova multimodal embeddings do not directly process spoken content; depending on the task, a BDA parser or a text-embedding route may be needed. Spoken audio or video may also require transcription processing. Review the specific image-query and retrieval limitations in the knowledge-base query guidance before designing the pipeline.
How to compare cost without relying on a headline rate
A price per token alone cannot answer which API will cost less for a multimodal app. Providers may price different modalities or tiers differently, and the actual bill can also depend on generated media, cached inputs, grounding or tools, response length, retries, and volume. Google’s pricing documentation, for example, separates text, image, and video from audio in applicable tiers and describes grounding charges; OpenAI’s rate card is model-specific. Check the current Gemini pricing and OpenAI pricing pages rather than treating any undated figure as a stable comparison.
For each finalist, estimate costs from the same expected traffic mix, then validate the estimate with measured usage during your evaluation. Record cost per completed task as well as cost per request: a cheaper request is not necessarily cheaper if it fails more often or requires retries. No stable, dated, apples-to-apples cost figure is established for an unspecified workload.
What the available documentation cannot decide
Official capability pages can confirm documented models, endpoints, and pricing categories, but they do not determine which service is most accurate, fastest, most reliable, or least expensive for your particular application. There is no independent same-task benchmark in the cited material comparing these providers. Build your own controlled test before making a production choice, and verify live model, regional, endpoint, pricing, and terms details when you procure or deploy.
