AOMEI Backupper Freezes or Crashes? Check These Causes and Fixes

A freeze during an AOMEI backup does not prove the app caused it. Identify whether Windows crashed, capture the relevant error code, and follow the matching diagnostic steps.

If your PC freezes or shows a blue screen during an AOMEI Backupper job, first determine whether Windows crashed, the whole computer became unresponsive, or only the backup task stopped. The timing is a useful clue, but it does not prove Backupper caused the problem. Record the stop code or AOMEI error code before changing settings; those details point to different troubleshooting paths.

Why does my PC freeze during an AOMEI backup?

A freeze during a backup can involve the backup application, a driver, Windows, or hardware. Microsoft lists hardware, device drivers, and software among possible causes of unexpected restarts, so a crash that happens while Backupper is running is not by itself a diagnosis. AOMEI’s changelog has also recorded occasional system, disk, or partition backup freezes and driver-based backup operations that caused blue screens in some environments. That history shows these symptoms have occurred, but it does not establish that your PC has the same issue or identify the relevant release.

Start by distinguishing what actually failed:

  • Only the backup task stopped or stalled: Windows remains responsive and you can use other apps. Note the task’s status and any AOMEI error code.
  • The whole PC became unresponsive: Note what was visible and whether you had to force a restart. If there was no blue screen, there may be no stop code to record.
  • Windows showed a blue screen and restarted: Record the stop code and any module or file name displayed. Microsoft explains that these details can help narrow down the cause: Microsoft’s blue-screen troubleshooting guide.

For any branch, note your Backupper version, Windows version and build, task type, backup mode, source and destination, and whether the failure repeats. These details give troubleshooting or support a clearer picture of the conditions.

Why do I get a blue screen while using AOMEI Backupper?

A blue screen is a Windows stop error, not simply a failed backup task. The stop code and any displayed module name are more useful than the fact that the crash coincided with a backup. Preserve those details and, if available, the Windows dump file before trying repeated backup runs or changing several settings at once.

Check whether Backupper also reported an error code. In particular, AOMEI assigns specific guidance to codes 4140 and 4209; those instructions apply to the matching errors, not to every freeze or blue screen. AOMEI’s error-code guidance covers the vendor-specific steps and diagnostic files.

What should I do if AOMEI reports error 4140?

AOMEI defines error 4140 as the backup driver working improperly. Follow the vendor’s driver-specific sequence rather than applying every suggested change to an unrelated failure:

  1. Reinstall AOMEI Backupper and restart the computer, as directed in AOMEI’s 4140 guidance.
  2. Check whether security software is blocking the backup driver. AOMEI also advises checking Controlled Folder Access; review the relevant protection settings rather than disabling security broadly.
  3. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges and run net start ambakdrv. If Windows reports that the driver cannot start, keep that result with your notes.
  4. If the prior steps do not resolve the issue, change the backup mode to Microsoft VSS, following AOMEI’s instructions. This is an alternative backup mode in the vendor’s 4140 troubleshooting, not a universal fix for all blue screens.

How do I find the stop code or dump file?

If Windows crashed, the diagnostic file differs from the one used for an application crash. For error 4209, AOMEI asks users whose computer crashed to provide the Windows Minidump from C:WindowsMinidump along with the AOMEI installation log folder. Preserve the files associated with the crash and share them through AOMEI support rather than deleting them during cleanup.

If Backupper itself crashed but Windows did not, AOMEI’s instructions identify Crash.dmp and the log folder under the program’s installation directory. The installation path varies, so locate the actual Backupper installation on your PC rather than assuming a particular example path. AOMEI’s error-code instructions describe the 4209 files, and its separate crash-log instructions explain what to send for an application crash.

When the listed troubleshooting does not resolve a backup issue, AOMEI’s FAQ recommends contacting support with the installation log folder: AOMEI Backupper backup-failure FAQ. Include the Windows stop code or AOMEI error code, Backupper and Windows versions, task details, and whether the failure is repeatable.

Could antivirus be causing a backup freeze?

AOMEI lists antivirus interaction as a possible issue when a backup is stuck at 0%. That is a different, specific symptom; it does not establish antivirus as the cause of a system freeze or BSOD. Check the vendor’s advice if your task is actually stuck at 0%, but do not treat disabling protection as a general troubleshooting step.

Should I buy a different drive to stop the freezes?

No evidence here establishes that buying a drive will repair a freeze or blue screen. An external drive can serve as a separate backup destination, but it is not a fix for a Windows crash. If you want to test whether the failure changes with a different destination, record the current source and destination first and treat the result as diagnostic evidence, not proof of a hardware remedy. AOMEI’s external-drive backup guidance covers that destination type.
