Choose a manual typewriter for an unplugged, mechanical writing routine; choose an electronic model if correction aids, text memory, spell check, or formatting matter more. There is no single best typewriter for everyone: match the machine to how you write, then check its paper capacity, portability, power needs, condition, support, and total cost.
Start with how you want to write
Before comparing models, decide what you want the machine to do in your everyday routine. A specialist buying guide distinguishes manual writing, portable electronic typing, and professionally reconditioned machines as different options for different needs. The right question is less “Which model is best?” than “Which typewriter is right for you?” Typewriters.com’s buying guide offers that needs-first framing.

| Type | Best suited to | Consider before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Manual typewriter | A tactile, mechanical experience without electrical power. | Correction is less convenient than the correction-memory functions listed for electronic machines. For a used machine, condition and service history matter. |
| Electronic typewriter | Typing on a physical page with powered operation, and potentially correction, memory, spell check, or formatting aids. | It needs electrical power. Compare the exact editing features, paper capacity, portability, warranty, and price rather than assuming all models offer the same tools. |
| Professionally reconditioned manual | A manual machine bought from a specialist seller that describes an inspection or service process. | Ask what was inspected, adjusted, or repaired, and what support is included. There is no universal reconditioning standard established by the cited buying guide. |

Correction and editing
Electronic models can make errors easier to fix, but the feature list varies. Royal’s Scriptor II specifications include one-line correction memory, text memory, and spell check. The Royal Scriptor listing describes up to 90 characters of full-line correction memory. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent evidence of typing comfort or long-term reliability.
Paper format and capacity
Check the maximum paper size and how the machine handles the documents you plan to produce. Royal lists capacity for 13-inch paper for the Scriptor II. Do not assume another model has the same capacity; verify its own specifications and manual.

Formatting and keyboard
If you need centered text, a flush right margin, or other layout controls, check that the specific machine lists those functions. Royal lists centering and right-margin flush among the Scriptor’s features. Keyboard layout and feel are personal, and published feature lists do not establish that a keyboard will be comfortable for you.
Portability and power
Manual machines do not depend on electrical power, while electronic typewriters require it. Consider where you will write and whether you need to carry the machine. Confirm dimensions, weight, and power requirements in the exact model’s specifications; the product examples below do not establish a comparable portability ranking.

Two current Royal electronic examples
These manufacturer listings provide concrete electronic options, not a complete survey of all markets, models, or used machines. Prices and stock can change, so confirm them on the product page before buying.
| Model | Manufacturer-listed features | Price and warranty listed |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Scriptor II | 16K text memory, a 300-word user dictionary, memory protection, full-line correction memory, spell check, and capacity for 13-inch paper. | $499.99 and in stock at the time the product page was reviewed; 180-day parts-and-labor warranty stated on the page. Use the features you will actually rely on to narrow the choice. If correcting text and retaining it in memory matter, compare the exact correction and memory functions. If you mostly want a physical page and a mechanical routine, electronic editing tools may not justify the power requirement or price.

Check availability and support for the exact model
Brand history alone does not tell you whether a particular typewriter is currently supported. Brother’s Japan typewriter category marks the products shown there discontinued, and Brother USA marks the GX8250 discontinued. Those notices apply to the products and regional pages they identify; they do not establish the status of every Brother model or rule out used units.
- Check whether the exact model is sold new or only used in your region.
- Look for its manual, compatible supplies, and service options before purchase.
- For a used machine, ask about working condition and service history; for a reconditioned machine, ask what work was done and what the seller covers.

Match supplies to the machine
Buy correction supplies by exact model and part number, not by brand name alone. Royal’s office catalog lists “ROYAL Lift Off Tape – 2PK 013025,” but that listing does not state which typewriter models it fits. Check your machine’s manual or a manufacturer compatibility listing before ordering. Royal Office’s catalog lists the product.

A practical purchase checklist
- Choose the operating style: manual for unplugged mechanical typing, electronic for powered typing and possible editing aids, or a professionally reconditioned manual if the seller’s service process matters to you.
- Match features to your work: check correction, memory, spell check, formatting, paper size, and capacity against the documents you expect to type.
- Check fit and power: verify the dimensions, weight, keyboard arrangement, and power requirements for the exact model.
- Verify condition and support: for used or reconditioned machines, ask what has been inspected or repaired and what support is available; for any model, look for its manual and compatible supplies.
- Compare the full purchase terms: confirm current price, stock, and warranty directly with the seller or manufacturer. Published specifications alone do not establish reliability or typing comfort.
