Trading in an eligible phone can reduce what you pay for a new iPhone, but “exchange bonus” can refer to different credits: Apple’s trade-in value, a carrier promotion, or both. The amount, timing and conditions depend on the offer and the device.
What an iPhone exchange bonus can include
Apple trade-in credit is based on the old phone’s model and condition. A carrier may separately offer promotional credits tied to a qualifying iPhone purchase. These are distinct parts of a deal, so check whether an advertised figure is Apple’s estimated trade-in value, a carrier promotion, or a combination. Apple describes selected carrier offers on its iPhone buying page and carrier deals page; the exact terms depend on the live offer.
How Apple trade-in credit is applied
Start by identifying the old device and receiving an estimate through Apple Trade In. For a full-price online purchase, Apple says the credit is applied after it receives the phone and confirms its condition. With a monthly-payment purchase, the estimated credit is applied to the new device’s purchase price, subject to verification. Depending on how you pay, credit may instead go to a gift card or account balance.
That means the trade-in lowers your net cost, but it may not reduce the amount charged at checkout in the same way for every payment method.

Why the estimate can change
The initial quote is not guaranteed. Apple’s trade-in terms say eligibility and value are subject to inspection. Apple may revise a quote if the phone’s actual condition differs from the description, Find My iPhone has not been removed, or the device misses the stated return window. Apple says you may accept or reject a revised value through the applicable process.
- Describe the phone’s model, storage and condition accurately when requesting an estimate.
- Remove Find My iPhone and follow the current instructions for preparing and sending the device.
- Check the return deadline and what happens if inspection changes the quote.
How to compare an exchange offer with other options
- Get the standalone trade-in estimate for your exact phone model, storage and condition.
- Identify any additional carrier promotion and check its eligibility requirements.
- Find out when each credit is applied and whether it is purchase credit, account credit or installments.
- Check for inspection, return-timing, financing or service requirements that could affect the offer.
- Compare the total cost under each option rather than relying on the headline maximum.
Apple’s pages describe selected carrier deals, but they do not establish the current terms for every carrier offer. Check the carrier’s live terms before calculating what a particular deal will save.

That is a page-specific estimate range, not a guaranteed credit for every buyer; the old phone and its condition determine the result, and displayed ranges can change.
