Pick a mid-range phone by its independently measured battery endurance, not by the mAh figure on the spec sheet. Then check the test method, what the phone gives up elsewhere, and how long it will be supported. In Expert Reviews’ 2026 mid-range guide, the Honor Magic 8 Lite is the battery pick. It ran for more than 40 hours in the publication’s looped-video test. The Google Pixel 9a managed 34 hours 5 minutes in the same test. Those are lab-style results, not promises for everyday use.
Start with measured endurance, not capacity
A bigger battery usually helps, but the result depends on the whole phone: screen, chip, software and how the test is run. Expert Reviews lists the Honor Magic 8 Lite with a 7,500mAh battery and the Pixel 9a with 5,100mAh. The Honor’s capacity lead matches its endurance lead in this case. Even so, the useful number is the hours each phone lasted when tested, because capacity alone does not tell you your own runtime.

Read the test method before comparing numbers
Publishers do not test batteries the same way, so figures from different outlets are not interchangeable.

- Expert Reviews loops video in VLC at 170 cd/m² brightness with flight mode on. This is a steady, repeatable load. It tells you which phone is more efficient at video playback, but it leaves out mobile data, gaming and heavy multitasking.
- Which? uses a robotic arm to simulate use, with the screen at a standard indoor brightness of 300 nits. That setup is closer to mixed use and not directly comparable with a video loop.
- Tom’s Guide reports 11:13 for the Samsung Galaxy A57 in its own battery test. The guide’s retrieved text did not include the full protocol, so read that number only as a result within Tom’s Guide’s own testing, not against Expert Reviews’ hours.
The practical rule is to compare phones within one publication’s tests, or across outlets only when the methods match. If a review gives a number without describing how it was produced, give it less weight.
Don’t assume a higher price means better battery life
Which? says its lab results show no correlation between high price and good battery life. It also says phones under £350 were more likely to have longer battery lives than phones above £350. That is a finding about the phones Which? tested, not a rule for every handset. It does suggest you can set a modest budget without giving up endurance. Which? also reports that battery life is a priority for 45% of shoppers. The retrieved passage did not give the survey’s sample size or dates, so treat that as Which?’s own figure.

Weigh what the long-lasting phone gives up
The endurance leader is not automatically the best phone for you. Expert Reviews flags the Honor Magic 8 Lite’s middling performance and weak ultrawide camera. If you play demanding games or often use wide-angle shots, those weaknesses may matter more than extra hours. A phone that lasts a day and a half, rather than two days, may be the better buy if it is faster and takes better photos. Ask which compromise you would notice daily.

Long runtime reduces how often you charge, but charging speed still matters on the days it runs out. Tom’s Guide lists the Galaxy A57 with 45W wired charging. It also says Samsung guarantees six years of security updates and four years of major Android upgrades. The Pixel 9a is reported by Expert Reviews to have seven years of software support.

Support length matters for battery as well as security. If you plan to keep a phone for many years, a long update commitment is a reason to prefer it over a phone with slightly longer test hours. Treat these as manufacturer commitments as reported by the publications. Confirm them on the maker’s page for your regional model.

- Set your budget in your own market. The strongest shortlist evidence here is UK-oriented, so don’t carry UK prices or availability to another country.
- Shortlist from one publication’s battery tests. Prefer tests with a described method, and note which method each uses.
- Match the test to your habits. A video-loop result suits streaming-heavy use. A simulated-use result suits a mix of calls, browsing and apps.
- Check the weak spots. Look at performance, camera quality, screen size, weight, durability and charging speed, and decide which you can accept.
- Confirm support length. Look for the number of years of security updates and major Android upgrades.
- Verify the exact model, price and seller before buying, since variants and prices differ by region and change over time.
Don’t buy an accessory in the hope that it will extend battery life. Nothing in the tested evidence shows one is needed to reach the results above.
The Bottom Line
If battery is your first priority, start with the Honor Magic 8 Lite (more than 40 hours in Expert Reviews’ test) and compare it with the Pixel 9a (34 hours 5 minutes). Then decide whether the Honor’s weaker performance and ultrawide camera are acceptable. Confirm the local price and support terms before you buy.
