First check your tablet’s exact model for a microSD slot and its maximum supported capacity. Then choose a card within that limit based on what you’ll store and whether you need portable file storage or app storage. A card’s format label or capacity alone does not guarantee that a particular tablet will accept it.
Check whether your tablet accepts a microSD card
Not every Android tablet has a microSD slot. Find the full model name or model number in Settings, on the packaging, or in the device documentation, then check that model’s manual or official support page for both a slot and a maximum card capacity. Do not assume that another tablet in the same product family has the same limit. Samsung’s support guidance notes that some of its models do not accept cards; its Canada capacity list is specific to models sold in that market, so regional specifications may differ.

Choose a capacity the tablet supports
Card-format names describe capacity families, not what every tablet can use. Samsung lists microSD cards as up to 2 GB, microSDHC as up to 32 GB, and microSDXC as above 32 GB up to 2 TB. A tablet can support less than a format family’s ceiling, so its own published maximum takes precedence. Samsung’s format and compatibility guidance explains these ranges.

Match card performance to what you’ll do
For basic file storage and still photography, Samsung says regular microSD or microSDHC cards may be sufficient. For high-resolution video, it recommends microSDXC, citing its greater capacity and read/write capability. Follow the tablet and recording app’s requirements where available; a card label or headline speed claim does not prove better performance for every task. Samsung’s guidance covers these use cases.
Some cards also advertise application-performance or video-speed classes. For example, Samsung’s announcement says certain 128 GB-and-higher cards in its named EVO Select and EVO Plus product lines carry A2 and V30 ratings. These are the manufacturer’s specifications for those products, not independent test results or a guarantee that an Android tablet will run apps faster. Samsung’s announcement gives the product details.

If your tablet supports adoptable storage, card speed matters for apps and other activity using that storage. The Android Open Source Project says Android benchmarks a card during adoption and warns when it is significantly slower than internal storage; that warning does not establish how a particular card will perform for every device or workload. AOSP’s adoptable-storage documentation explains the check.
Choose portable storage or app storage
Android’s two storage modes have different trade-offs. Google describes portable storage as suitable for files such as photos and videos and movable between devices; it cannot install apps. Internal, or adoptable, storage can hold files and install apps but is tied to the device rather than serving as a transferable portable card. Availability depends on the tablet and manufacturer. Google’s Android Help describes the modes.

Do not assume a card will expand internal app storage. Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage, and notes that many apps cannot be moved to a card because developers can disallow it, often for performance reasons. Check your tablet’s own settings and support information. Samsung’s guidance covers these limitations.
Compare cards using the right checks
- Compatibility: Confirm the exact tablet model, presence of a card slot, supported card format, and maximum capacity.
- Capacity: Choose enough room for the files you intend to keep, without exceeding the tablet’s limit.
- Workload: Consider whether you need basic file storage, high-resolution video recording, or app storage the tablet actually supports.
- Performance labels: Compare classes relevant to your workload, but do not treat a high sequential-speed claim as proof of better results for every Android task.
- Computer use: If you also need a full-size SD reader, check whether the card bundle includes a full-size adapter rather than assuming it does.
Set up the card and handle errors safely
- Back up existing files. Formatting permanently deletes the card’s data, according to Google Android Help and Samsung troubleshooting guidance.
- Insert the card and follow the tablet’s prompt. Choose portable or internal/adoptable storage only if the tablet offers the mode you want. Menu names and paths differ by model and software version.
- If the tablet does not recognize it, Samsung suggests removing and reinserting the card, then testing it in another device. Back up important files before trying to format it.
- If formatting fails, Samsung points to the SD Association’s Memory Card Formatter for PC or Mac as a possible troubleshooting step. Formatting still erases data, so preserve anything important first.
