Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose a local AI agent by checking four things: where its data goes, whether your computer can handle the model and workload, whether it can use the tools you need, and how much setup and permission management you’re comfortable with. “Local” does not necessarily mean every part of a workflow stays on your device: a local model can still use cloud search, embeddings, or other integrations.
What counts as a local AI agent?
A local AI setup has three distinct parts, and each affects what “local” means:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Model and inference server: The model generates responses. It may run on your computer through software such as Ollama, llama.cpp, or vLLM, or run at a hosted provider.
- Interface: A chat or desktop app lets you choose a model and start work.
- Tools and permissions: These let the agent search the web, read files, run commands, or control desktop apps.
Open WebUI supports local model servers and hosted APIs, but its documentation distinguishes connecting a model provider from connecting an autonomous agent. A local model alone does not provide every capability associated with an agent. Open WebUI’s provider documentation describes its endpoint options and the distinction.
How do you evaluate privacy?
Trace the data path for the complete workflow—not just the model. Check where inference, embeddings, document extraction, search, memory, and app integrations run, and what information each sends.

Open WebUI says the selected endpoint determines where inference occurs. Prompts and included context go to the provider when you select a cloud model. A local inference endpoint does not, by itself, make separately configured cloud search, extraction, or embedding services local. Open WebUI’s provider documentation explains endpoint selection.
Open Interpreter says workspace files stay on the computer, while instructions and context needed by the agent go to the model selected in the active profile. It says other information leaves the computer only when a configured integration—such as email, Telegram, or an MCP server—sends it. Its FAQ also says a local Ollama or LM Studio profile supports local models and that offline tasks work when they do not need the internet. These are statements from Open Interpreter, not an independent audit. Open Interpreter’s desktop FAQ
Ollama’s privacy policy says it does not collect, store, transmit, or access prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content processed locally. The same policy separately discusses limited device and usage metadata and transient processing for cloud-hosted models. Treat this as Ollama’s policy for its service, not a guarantee about every component in a local AI stack. Ollama’s privacy policy

What hardware do you need?
There is no universal minimum computer specification established for local AI agents. Requirements depend on the model, context length, and workload, so identify those first and then check the current guidance for the model you plan to run. A graphics card or higher-memory computer may help with some workloads, but neither is a blanket requirement for everyone.
One configuration-specific example from Open WebUI’s FAQ: it says Ollama chooses a model’s default context length based on GPU VRAM, and that GPUs with less than 24 GiB get a default of 4,096 tokens. In the FAQ’s RAG troubleshooting context, Open WebUI recommends increasing context length to 8,192 tokens or more so retrieved material can fit. These figures are vendor guidance for that example, not universal hardware rules. Open WebUI FAQ
Open WebUI also says its default local CPU SentenceTransformers all-MiniLM-L6-v2 embedding setup uses roughly 500 MB of RAM per worker for a single-user deployment, and advises external embeddings for multi-user deployments. That figure describes the embedding component, not the total memory an agent needs. Open WebUI Essentials

- Check the model’s current requirements and the context length your task needs.
- Account for supporting services such as embeddings separately from model inference.
Which integrations and permissions matter?
Start with the actions you actually want the agent to perform. A model list does not tell you whether an agent can safely access the files, browser, terminal, or apps your workflow requires.

How much setup and maintenance can you handle?
Open Interpreter’s first-launch flow asks you to choose a workspace folder, select a profile containing a provider, model, and credentials, and grant operating-system permissions. Its installation documentation lists macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows, and Linux. Open Interpreter installation guide
Open WebUI can be deployed with Docker, Kubernetes, pip, or bare metal. That range offers deployment flexibility but requires comfort with the selected installation route; the documentation does not establish an independent ease-of-use ranking. Its Getting Started guide supports a staged approach: begin with a model and enable only the tools and knowledge features you need. Open WebUI Getting Started
- If you want a simpler start: Prioritize a clear installer, an understandable model selector, visible endpoint settings, bounded permissions, and straightforward update and backup instructions.
- If you are comfortable self-hosting: Deployment choices and configurable integrations may matter more than one-click setup.
Will a local AI agent work offline?
It can, if the model and every required supporting component are available locally and the task does not need the internet. Open Interpreter says local-profile tasks that do not require a website, API, or hosted model can work offline; tasks that depend on those services cannot until connectivity returns. Its installation page says voice transcription uses a local speech model after installation. Open Interpreter FAQ · Installation guide
Open WebUI’s FAQ describes local operation without external calls by default when configured with local models. Downloading models and setting up optional integrations may still require connectivity, and a local model cannot provide live web information on its own. Open WebUI FAQ
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose
- Define the job. Write down whether you need private-document work, coding, desktop actions, research, or offline use, and note how sensitive the data is.
- Set your privacy boundary. Decide whether inference and supporting services must all stay local or whether a hybrid setup is acceptable. Check each endpoint and integration, not just the model label.
- Match model and workload to hardware. Select the model and context needs first, then verify its current requirements for your computer.
- List required actions. Verify integrations, permission scope, and sandboxing for the files, apps, or commands involved.
- Compare the operational work. Check supported operating systems, installation route, credentials or account requirements, updates, backups, and command-line needs.
- Start with a bounded test. Use non-sensitive files and the smallest useful permission set before connecting personal accounts or consequential apps.
