For most people with an Apple Silicon Mac, Fedora Asahi Remix is the first Linux distribution to investigate: Asahi Linux names it its flagship polished end-user distribution. But do not install based on “M1,” “M2,” or another chip label alone. Check your exact Mac model and the features you rely on in Asahi’s live support tables first; support differs by model and generation.
What is the difference between Asahi Linux and Fedora Asahi Remix?
Asahi Linux is the project working on Linux support for Apple Silicon hardware; it is not the name of a single Linux distribution. Its FAQ describes Fedora Asahi Remix as its flagship end-user distribution, developed in collaboration with the Fedora Project. The project says the Remix is both a polished distribution for users and a reference for other distributions incorporating Asahi work. Read the Asahi Linux FAQ.

That makes Fedora Asahi Remix the sensible default to evaluate, rather than a claim that no other distribution can use Asahi’s work. The FAQ does not provide a model-by-model comparison of alternative distributions, so it cannot establish that another distro offers equivalent installation or hardware support.

Check the support table for your chip generation and exact model before choosing. Asahi’s overview links separate tables for M1, M2, M3, and M4 Macs. Its FAQ says support is available for most M1 and M2 machines, but directs users to the feature tables for current details. A broad statement such as “Linux supports M1 Macs” is not enough to determine whether your particular Mac’s Wi-Fi, sleep, camera, display outputs, or other hardware will work.

Start at the Asahi feature-support overview, then open the table for your generation. Status labels matter: “WIP” means work is in progress, “TBA” means the work is not currently underway, and absent hardware is not supported. The documentation does not give a timeline for features that are not ready.
M1: support varies by model and feature
The M1 feature table records differences among listed devices. It shows working Wi-Fi and Bluetooth entries for listed Macs, but not every feature is at the same maturity level across every model. For example, the table marks Touch ID as TBA and shows that microphone and HDMI support depend on the device. Use the row for your exact Mac and inspect each feature you need rather than extrapolating from another M1 model.

M4: do not infer support from older Macs
The current M4 feature table marks several major capabilities—including GPU, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort Alt Mode, and suspend/sleep—as TBA for the listed M4 chip groups. It also says the MacBook Neo has no installer. These statuses are live and can change, so verify the table close to the time you plan to install. Do not assume support for a feature on M1 or M2 means it is ready on M4.

How should you compare Linux distribution options?
For an Apple Silicon Mac, compare options in this order. A preferred desktop environment matters, but only after you know the underlying hardware you need is supported.

- Support maturity: Treat a stable/current entry differently from WIP or TBA. If a required feature is still in development, or work has not started, the distribution may not suit your needs today.
- Distribution integration: Fedora Asahi Remix is the project’s flagship polished end-user choice. The Asahi FAQ does not establish a comprehensive, model-by-model comparison with other distributions.
- Desktop preference: Choose among the available Fedora Asahi Remix images only after checking compatibility. KDE Plasma is the flagship desktop; GNOME and Minimal/Server images are also offered.
- Installation approach: Be comfortable following the current installation guide from macOS, including its instructions about disk space and boot setup, before proceeding.
How is Fedora Asahi Remix installed?
Fedora Asahi Remix is installed from macOS using the Asahi installer; the project does not describe this as a generic USB live-boot installation. Its Fedora Asahi page presents this command: curl https://alx.sh | sh. Before running it, consult the current Fedora Asahi installation information and follow the linked live installation guide for prerequisites, partitioning, boot-policy choices, and recovery instructions. Read each prompt and make disk-space and boot decisions with the guide open.
Which desktop should you choose?
KDE Plasma is Fedora Asahi Remix’s flagship desktop. GNOME and Minimal/Server images are also listed on the Fedora Asahi page. Choose based on how you want to use the Mac—full desktop, GNOME environment, or a minimal/server setup. The available information does not establish that one desktop is required for hardware support, so make compatibility decisions from the feature tables rather than desktop preference.
