There is no universal developer-laptop minimum: an editor and browser need less than Android emulators, large Visual Studio solutions, or a full Android operating-system build.
Start with your target platform and toolchain
Before comparing processor speeds or RAM, confirm that the laptop’s operating system and processor architecture support the exact development tools and release you plan to use. A powerful machine is a poor fit if an essential toolchain will not run on it.

Match specifications to the work you do
Official requirements are best treated as compatibility floors or workload-specific guidance, not a promise of smooth performance for every project. For example, JetBrains Rider 2026.2 lists four CPU cores, 8 GB total RAM, and 10 GB of disk space as its hardware requirements. Those figures describe Rider’s requirements, not a complete memory or storage budget for an operating system, browser, databases, containers, and other applications running alongside it. Prioritize a supported operating system, a capable current processor, an SSD, and enough memory for the IDE plus your normal browser tabs, communication apps, local services, and test tools. If you usually run a browser, editor, and a few lightweight services, you may not need the same configuration as someone running several virtual devices or building a large native application. Android application development
Decide whether you will use Android Studio with an emulator, connect a physical test device, or do both. Android Developers’ 2026 installation guidance lists 8 GB RAM as the minimum for the IDE alone, 16 GB as the minimum for the IDE plus an emulator, and recommends 32 GB for the listed Windows, macOS, and Linux configurations. It estimates about 4 GB of memory for each simultaneously running Android Virtual Device (AVD), though the exact amount varies by system. Larger projects can need more memory and CPU for compilation and IDE loading. Android Studio installation requirements.
Android Studio recommends an SSD and at least 32 GB of free space for its IDE-plus-emulator configuration. Each additional AVD may need up to 6 GB of storage. Those are free-space figures for the stated software configuration, not the laptop’s total drive capacity: the operating system, SDK versions, build caches, source code, and other applications also need room.
Windows professional development
Microsoft’s 2026 guidance recommends 16 GB RAM for typical professional Visual Studio solutions and says Visual Studio works best with 64 GB RAM and 16 or more CPU cores. It also recommends an SSD and a quad-core-or-better processor. These are Microsoft’s published requirements and recommendations, not independent laptop benchmark results; the right configuration depends on which workloads and project sizes you use. Then size memory and storage for the IDE, simulators, assets, and other tools you keep open. For visionOS development, Apple specifically requires Apple silicon. Containers and virtualized workloads
Container software’s minimum is not a sensible total-laptop target. Docker Desktop for Mac lists at least 4 GB RAM as its own minimum, but the computer also has to run macOS, the IDE, containers, and other applications. Docker’s documentation says it supports the current and two previous major macOS releases; check the current compatibility information for your intended setup. Full Android Open Source Project builds
Building the full Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is a specialized, compute- and storage-heavy task rather than an ordinary app-development workload. The AOSP requirements page specifies at least 64 GB RAM and 400 GB of free disk space on 64-bit x86 Linux. It reports approximately 40 minutes for a full build on a 72-core, 64 GB machine, compared with approximately six hours on a six-core, 64 GB machine. These are the page’s reported examples, not a promise of build times on other systems. AOSP build requirements.

How to evaluate the key specifications
RAM: account for everything open at once
Memory use adds up across the IDE, browser, emulators, containers, local databases, and operating system. Consider both capacity and upgradeability: many laptops do not allow memory upgrades after purchase. Android Studio’s workload-specific figures illustrate the difference between an IDE alone and an IDE running an emulator, while Microsoft’s professional-development guidance reflects heavier Visual Studio work. Neither figure is a universal rule for every developer.

CPU: consider cores, generation, and virtualization
Compilation and other parallel workloads can benefit from more capable processors and additional cores, but raw core count alone does not establish how a particular laptop will perform. Compare processor generation and architecture as well, and check virtualization support if you plan to run Android emulators or virtual machines. Android Studio requires virtualization support for its emulator configurations. Microsoft recommends a quad-core-or-better processor and describes 16 or more cores as best for Visual Studio.
Storage: prioritize an SSD and usable capacity
Development tools occupy space beyond your project files: SDKs, emulators, build outputs, caches, and multiple tool versions can all add up. An SSD is recommended by both Android Studio and Microsoft’s Visual Studio guidance. Estimate the space you will need for the tools and projects you expect to keep installed, then leave room for updates and future work. AOSP’s 400 GB free-space requirement shows how far a specialized source-tree build can exceed ordinary IDE needs.

- OPERATING SYSTEM - Windows 11 Pro 64‑bit, with AI‑powered Copilot, offers intelligent assistance to streamline complex professional workflows, enhance productivity, and support advanced multitasking across demanding applications. Built for workstation‑class computing, it delivers enterprise‑grade security and IT manageability
Display: make room for the IDE
Android Studio recommends a 1920×1080 display for its listed operating systems, and Microsoft says Visual Studio works best at 1920×1080 or higher. Screen size and resolution affect how comfortably you can view code, tool windows, and documentation together. If a laptop’s built-in display feels cramped, an external monitor at 1920×1080 or higher is an optional way to expand your workspace.
GPU: buy for a specific need
A discrete graphics processor is not automatically necessary just because you write software. Android Studio lists GPU requirements for emulator use on Windows and Linux, so check those requirements if emulation is part of your workflow. Otherwise, make GPU capability a priority only when your target tools or workloads call for it.

Portability, battery, and ports: decide what matters in your routine
Weight, battery life, charging, keyboard feel, and available ports may shape your daily experience, particularly if you travel or work away from a desk. There are no comparable measurements here to rank particular laptops on those qualities, so assess them against your own routine rather than treating a general specification as a model-level verdict.
A practical comparison checklist
When comparing two or more laptops, use the same workload and requirements for each. Record the exact configuration, since memory, storage, processor, and display options can vary within one model line.
Quick Recap
- Confirm compatibility: Write down the OS version, processor architecture, IDE release, SDKs, and target platform you need. Verify support for that combination in the tools’ current documentation.
- List what runs simultaneously: Include your IDE, browser, local services, containers, virtual machines, and emulators. For Android Studio, account for the number of AVDs you expect to run.
- Set a memory target: Use the relevant vendor guidance as a baseline, then account for your whole workload. Check whether the laptop’s RAM can be upgraded later.
- Check CPU and virtualization: Compare processor generation, architecture, and core count. Confirm virtualization support for emulators or virtual machines when required.
- Calculate usable storage: Check SSD capacity and leave space for the operating system, IDEs, SDKs, emulators, caches, projects, and updates.
- Inspect the display and connections: Compare resolution and usable screen area with your workspace needs; check ports and charging options against the accessories you use.
- Assess mobility needs: Compare weight and battery claims using consistent conditions where available, and consider whether you will usually work near power and an external display.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Treating one RAM number as a universal minimum. Requirements differ between an IDE alone, an IDE with emulators, and large professional projects.
- Buying before checking architecture support. An otherwise capable laptop may not support a required toolchain or emulator configuration.
- Counting only project files when sizing storage. SDKs, AVDs, build artifacts, and caches also consume disk space.
- Assuming a vendor minimum guarantees a comfortable experience. Minimums establish a baseline for a stated product configuration; multitasking and larger projects can call for more.
- Choosing a discrete GPU without a workload reason. Confirm that your target tools need one before making it a deciding factor.
