Choose a laptop by starting with your college program’s current hardware and software requirements—not by choosing a brand or a generic “best laptop” list. For lighter 2D design and web work, a capable thin-and-light may be enough; sustained video, 3D, CAD, animation, or rendering calls for more memory, graphics capability, and storage. “AI tools” alone do not determine a spec: first find out which tools you plan to use and whether they run locally or in the cloud.
What should you check before choosing a laptop?
Ask your department which operating systems, app versions, plug-ins, peripherals, and minimum or recommended specifications it supports. Requirements can differ by program, even within one college. The College for Creative Studies (CCS) explicitly recommends checking with the academic department before purchasing, and the USC School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) says students should wait for admission and current school instructions. SCA’s purchase configurations are marked Fall 2025, so treat them as dated guidance rather than a current universal requirement.

- List the courses and software you expect to use. Include specialized tools, plug-ins, external devices, and any required operating system.
- Get the department’s current requirements. Ask whether a particular configuration is required, recommended, or supported in campus labs.
- Classify your workload. Frequent 4K editing, 3D scenes, CAD, animation, and rendering demand more sustained performance than typical 2D design or browser-based work.
- Check the whole setup. Consider storage, lab compatibility, portability, and the school’s repair or protection guidance as well as the laptop itself.
How much performance does your creative work need?
Primarily 2D design, web work, and productivity
For Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Figma, web apps, and productivity, CCS says a MacBook Air may be suitable when its configuration and software compatibility fit the work. A comparable Windows laptop may also work if it meets the program’s requirements. That guidance is specific to CCS; it is not a guarantee that every design course or school supports every thin-and-light configuration.

Prioritize memory, fast storage, and performance that can be sustained through long editing or export sessions. CCS positions a MacBook Pro for demanding creative applications and advises 32 GB or more of unified memory for extensive video and motion work. For Windows, CCS recommends a dedicated NVIDIA or professional GPU for video and other demanding creative workloads.

3D, CAD, animation, and rendering
Check the exact application and school platform guidance before choosing. CCS recommends dedicated graphics for these workloads, while USC SCA’s 3D performance setup specifies a Windows laptop with NVIDIA RTX graphics. A GPU recommendation does not make two systems interchangeable: confirm that the required software, plug-ins, and peripherals run on the operating system you choose.
Which specifications are useful reference points?
The figures below are recommendations for particular schools or software, not universal college requirements. A school’s current program instructions and the current requirements for your actual apps take priority.

|---|---|---|
| CCS general Mac recommendation, 2026–27; updated September 17, 2026 | Apple M5 or newer; 24 GB unified memory minimum, with 32 GB or more recommended; 512 GB SSD minimum, with 1 TB recommended. M5 Pro/Max and MacBook Pro are positioned for demanding creative apps. | CCS’s general guidance. It is not a requirement for every college or course. |
| CCS general Windows recommendation, 2026–27 | Windows 11 64-bit; current Core Ultra 7 or better, or Ryzen 7/Ryzen AI 7 or better; 32 GB RAM; 512 GB NVMe SSD minimum, with 1 TB recommended. CCS suggests 32–64 GB for demanding 3D/video and recommends dedicated NVIDIA or professional graphics, with 8 GB VRAM, for demanding work. | CCS guidance; verify the exact processor and GPU against the school’s and apps’ current requirements. |
| Adobe Premiere 26.x; requirements page updated September 16, 2026 | For Windows, Adobe recommends 16 GB RAM for HD editing and 32 GB or more for 4K or higher, plus 8 GB GPU memory. It recommends a fast internal SSD for the app and cache, with an additional high-speed drive for media. For macOS, it recommends Apple silicon M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, or newer and 16 GB unified memory. | Premiere-specific recommendations for that version—not a general specification for other creative apps. Adobe describes its minimum specifications as targeting HD editing and its recommended specifications as covering HD, 4K, or higher. |
| USC SCA program guidance; purchase configurations marked Fall 2025 | Its guidance presents an NVIDIA RTX-based Windows setup for 3D performance, a MacBook Pro for editing performance, and lighter basic configurations. It also calls for external project storage and recommends a secondary backup. | Requirements vary by division. Confirm current instructions with SCA before buying; its lab drive guidance requires USB-C protocol compatibility and says Thunderbolt-only drives are not supported. |
Do not treat memory numbers as interchangeable: unified memory in a Mac and system RAM plus discrete GPU VRAM in a Windows laptop describe different arrangements. Check the application’s requirements for the specific platform rather than assuming one number translates directly to another.

Should you choose Mac or Windows?
Choose the platform your required courses and applications support. The school’s approved setup matters more than a general brand preference, particularly for specialized 3D, CAD, animation, video, plug-in, licensing, or peripheral workflows.

- Mac can be a fit when the department supports macOS and your main work aligns with its apps and configuration guidance. CCS says an Air may suit lighter design work and positions a Pro for demanding creative apps.
- Windows can be a fit when your program requires or recommends Windows, or your workload depends on dedicated NVIDIA graphics. The CCS and USC guidance specifically call out NVIDIA graphics for demanding 3D-related work.
- Check Windows on ARM carefully. CCS warns that compatibility can vary for specialized creative software, CAD and 3D apps, plug-ins, peripherals, and licensing. Adobe lists Qualcomm Snapdragon X support for its current Premiere Windows-on-Arm requirement, but that does not establish compatibility for every app in a student’s software stack.
What does “AI tools” mean for laptop requirements?
There is no single hardware specification implied by the phrase “AI tools.” First identify the tool and task—such as image generation, editing assistance, transcription, or a locally run model—and determine whether processing happens on the laptop or through a cloud service. The school and app requirements available here do not establish a universal NPU, GPU, or local-model specification for unspecified AI use. Do not pay for a particular AI-oriented component based only on the label; verify the actual app’s platform and hardware support.
How much storage and backup do creative projects need?
Separate the laptop’s internal storage needs from project-media storage. For Premiere, Adobe recommends a fast internal SSD for the application and cache plus an additional high-speed drive for media. USC SCA calls for an external project drive and recommends keeping a secondary backup. If you expect to use USC labs, check drive protocol compatibility: the school says Thunderbolt-only drives are not supported there and requires USB-C protocol support.

Capacity depends on your software and projects, so use the department’s requirement and your expected media workload to choose. A drive that carries projects is not itself a backup if it is the only copy.

- Headroom for your heaviest courses: favor capacity for sustained video, 3D, or rendering if those are routine parts of the program, rather than optimizing only for introductory work.
- Portability and campus use: compare screen size, weight, battery needs, and whether your school’s labs or support ecosystem fit the device. The cited guidance does not provide battery-life benchmarks.
- Protection and repair terms: CCS recommends AppleCare+ for MacBook students and three-year manufacturer protection for Windows configurations. Compare actual coverage terms, exclusions, repair routes, and cost for your location before deciding.
- External connections: check ports and drive protocols against campus lab requirements and any peripherals your courses use.
When should you buy?
If you have not been admitted or have not received your program’s current configuration, wait when practical. USC SCA explicitly recommends that students not buy computer hardware or software until admission. Before placing an order, confirm the school’s latest requirements and support rules; recommendations can change, and the SCA configurations above are labeled Fall 2025.
