Choose a label printer by starting with the label’s purpose, required size and expected lifespan—not by picking a model advertised as “best.” Direct-thermal printers are a practical fit for many short-term shipping labels; labels that must stay crisp for years, or withstand sunlight or chemicals, may call for thermal-transfer equipment and compatible ribbon and media. Then check print width, realistic workload, connections, software compatibility and ongoing media costs.
1. Decide what the labels need to do
Shipping and postage labels, product packaging, inventory identification and durable asset tracking can have different size and lifespan requirements. Write down the label’s dimensions, what it must display, where it will be used and how long it needs to remain readable. Include barcode and text density: a design that fits physically may still be difficult to read if its elements are too small at the printer’s resolution.

- Shipping and postage: Check the width and length required by your carrier or shipping platform, and whether the printer supports the media format you plan to use.
- Product and inventory: Consider whether the label must remain legible throughout storage, handling or the product’s time in use.
- Asset or outdoor identification: Account for exposure to sunlight, chemicals, abrasion and other conditions. Choose the media and printing method for the actual environment rather than assuming any thermal label will last.
- Office and mailing: Consider address labels, envelopes and other formats your workflow needs, including whether continuous tape or die-cut labels are more suitable.
2. Choose direct thermal or thermal transfer based on label life
These are different printing methods, and the printer and media must match the method. Zebra explains that direct-thermal printing heats chemically treated, heat-sensitive media to form an image. Thermal-transfer printing heats a ribbon to transfer an image onto the label material. Zebra’s overview of the two printing methods describes the distinction.
Direct thermal for many short-term labels
Direct thermal does not require ink, toner or a ribbon, which can simplify routine printing. It is commonly suited to labels that only need to remain readable for a limited period, such as shipping labels. Zebra gives a general suitability range of one week to one year for direct-thermal applications; this is manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed lifetime for a particular label or set of storage and exposure conditions. Direct-thermal images are more vulnerable to direct sunlight and chemicals.

Thermal transfer for longer-lasting images
If labels need to remain crisp for years, Zebra recommends thermal transfer. The result depends on using a compatible printer, ribbon and label stock, so check all three against the label material and operating environment. Thermal transfer adds ribbon as a consumable; factor that into purchasing and replenishment decisions.
Do not assume that a wide-format direct-thermal printer can also make thermal-transfer labels. For example, Brother lists the QL-1110NWB’s printing method as direct thermal, not thermal transfer.

3. Match width, resolution and layout to the actual label
Maximum print width determines whether your label design fits; resolution affects how clearly small text, fine lines and dense barcodes can be reproduced. Check the printer’s stated width and resolution against a sample of the label you intend to print. If the design is wider than the printer supports, you may need another printer or a redesigned, rotated layout.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. It is one example for businesses whose required format fits that width—not a universal choice for product or durable asset labels. Its manufacturer product page lists a maximum speed of up to 69 standard address labels per minute at 300 dpi. Brother’s stated maximum is based on standard address labels with text only at 300 × 300 dpi, so it should not be treated as the expected speed for every design or workload.

4. Estimate workload using more than the advertised speed
Consider both typical daily use and the largest batch you need to print. A printer’s headline speed does not capture the time needed to format labels, send jobs, reload media or deal with interruptions. Zebra specifically cautions that formatting time can affect actual throughput in addition to the printer’s stated speed. Ask whether your software, network and label design can sustain the pace you need.
- Daily and peak volume: Estimate ordinary output and the largest batch you run during a busy period.
- Media capacity: Check roll capacity and how often changing rolls would interrupt work.
- Finishing: Decide whether an automatic cutter or peel function would save enough handling time to matter in your workflow.
- Reliability needs: Match expected duty to the manufacturer’s specifications and support terms. The cited product information does not establish comparative reliability between models.
5. Check connections, software and the way you print
List the devices and systems that will create labels: a desktop computer, a phone or tablet, a shipping platform, inventory software or a shared network. Then check each printer’s connection options and compatibility with the operating systems and applications you actually use. USB may suit a single workstation; wireless or Ethernet connections may be useful when several users need access. Confirm mobile printing and required apps rather than inferring support from a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi specification alone.

6. Work out media compatibility and recurring costs
The printer’s purchase price is only one part of the cost. Check the price and availability of compatible labels, any ribbon required by a thermal-transfer setup, expected media waste and replacement or maintenance needs. Compare cost per usable label only when you have comparable media specifications and pack sizes; the manufacturer information cited here does not provide a cross-model cost-per-label comparison.

Media compatibility is model-specific. Brother says its QL printers use DK media, and its QL-1110NWB product information warns that non-genuine replacement labels could damage the printer and may not be covered under warranty. The box contents listed on that page include a DK-1247 die-cut large shipping-label starter roll with 41 labels and a DK-2205 continuous tape starter roll. Check the current warranty terms and compatible-media details in Brother’s label makers and printers guide and the product documentation before purchasing supplies.
7. Use a model example only when it fits your needs
The Brother QL-1110NWB is worth considering if your business needs paper labels up to 4 inches wide, uses direct-thermal media and can work with Brother’s DK supplies and supported software. Its listed connectivity may suit a setup that needs USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. It is not the right match simply because it is a wide-format business printer: it will not meet a need for thermal-transfer printing, and the stated maximum speed applies only under Brother’s specified test conditions.
Brother’s US page displayed a list price of $334.99 and an out-of-stock status when accessed on October 7, 2026. Those are a dated snapshot, not a current market comparison; check the page and retailers for current price and availability.
