How to Choose a Home Water Filter for PFAS

Choose a PFAS filter by testing your water, verifying the exact model and contaminant claim in a certifier directory, and comparing maintenance and water-use trade-offs.

Start with a test: find out which PFAS are in your water, then choose a filter whose exact model is independently certified to reduce those specific chemicals. EPA points consumers to NSF/ANSI 53 and NSF/ANSI 58 listings, but a standard number or “PFAS removal” claim on its own is not enough. Verify the model and contaminants in a certifier’s directory, then compare replacement costs, installation, and water use.

1. Find out which PFAS are in your water

If your home uses public water

Ask your water utility for its PFAS test results and current guidance. The result matters because PFAS is a large chemical class: a finding for one compound does not describe every PFAS that may be present, and treatment performance varies by compound.

If your home uses a private well

Test regularly and consult your state or local environmental or health authority about testing and what to do with the results. EPA does not regulate private wells. If you arrange testing yourself, use a state-certified laboratory and EPA-developed methods.

EPA’s current regulation page, updated May 18, 2026, says public water systems must complete initial monitoring by 2027 and implement solutions for exceedances by 2029. That public-system timeline does not replace testing or advice for an individual private well.

2. Match the filter to the result

EPA identifies granular activated carbon (GAC), ion-exchange resin, and reverse osmosis (RO) as technologies that can reduce PFAS in home treatment. The technology name alone does not prove that a particular product has a verified PFAS-reduction claim. Filter performance also differs among compounds and depends on device design and water conditions.

Technology What to know What to verify
Granular activated carbon (GAC) Water passes through porous carbon that captures contaminants. EPA describes GAC as one of the most studied PFAS treatments. It generally works better for longer-chain PFOA and PFOS than for shorter-chain PFBS and PFBA. Results depend on the PFAS, carbon, bed depth, flow, temperature, and other water constituents. Confirm that the exact model has a PFAS-reduction certification covering the compound of concern. A carbon label alone is not proof.
Ion exchange Resins can capture PFAS; EPA describes anion-exchange resins as attracting negatively charged PFAS. Verify the exact model’s PFAS claim and its resin replacement instructions. The word “resin” does not establish performance.
Reverse osmosis (RO) A membrane separates treated water from a concentrated stream. EPA’s treatment research describes high-pressure membranes as highly effective for PFAS, including shorter-chain compounds, but that general finding does not guarantee the performance of each retail system. Look for a PFAS-reduction claim for the exact model under NSF/ANSI 58. Compare membrane and filter replacement, installation, and wastewater requirements.

Thomas Speth, an EPA researcher, said GAC “can be 100 percent effective for a period of time,” depending on the carbon, bed depth, flow, target PFAS, temperature, organic matter, and other constituents. This is conditional treatment performance, not a guarantee for every home filter or water supply.

Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher – Lead, Chlorine, PFOA/PFOS, Microplastics Filter, 10 Cup, 120 Gallon Filter Life - Filter Media Made in USA
  • Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
  • Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
  • Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
  • Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
  • Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.

3. Verify the exact model’s certification

  1. Find the complete model number, including any suffix or version shown on the product or its documentation.
  2. Look for a PFAS-reduction certification under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58. EPA identifies NSF/ANSI 58 as the RO standard.
  3. Open the certifier’s product directory and confirm that the exact model is listed for the specific PFAS you need addressed. EPA points consumers to directories from CSA Group, IAPMO R&T, NSF, UL, and WQA.
  4. Compare the listing with the product documentation before buying; a generic reference to a standard, an uncertified product, or an unsupported “PFAS removal” marketing statement is not equivalent to a verified listing.

There is an important limit to what certification establishes. EPA’s consumer guidance said that, as of April 2024, current filter certification standards focused on PFOA and PFOS and did not indicate that filters reduce those chemicals to the levels in EPA’s drinking-water standard. Check current certifier listings rather than assuming that certification covers every PFAS or guarantees a particular finished-water level.

4. Compare placement, upkeep, and total cost

Choose a location that fits how the household uses water

Pitchers, faucet attachments, under-sink units, and whole-home systems differ in convenience, capacity, installation, and the amount of water treated. Do not choose based on form factor alone. For drinking and cooking, point-of-use treatment can focus filtration on the water used for those purposes; follow your utility’s or state health agency’s advice for your measured situation.

Check recurring maintenance before purchase

  • Find the manufacturer’s replacement interval for cartridges, resin, or membranes, and whether the schedule changes with use or water conditions.
  • Price compatible replacements and account for installation and disposal where relevant, not just the initial device.
  • Follow the replacement schedule. EPA warns that missing it can increase PFAS exposure risk; there is no universal filter life that applies to every home.
  • For RO, account for its separate concentrated-water stream as well as filter and membrane changes.

Use published price ranges as estimates, not quotes

EPA’s consumer guidance gives approximate purchase ranges of $20–$1,000 for GAC and ion-exchange filter types and $150–$1,000 for RO systems, excluding maintenance. EPA’s broader estimate across filter types and installation formats is $20 to more than $1,000, also excluding maintenance. These are EPA estimates, not a current market survey or a quote for a specific model.

5. Use this buying checklist

  • Do I know which PFAS were measured, and at what level?
  • Does the exact model have a certifier-directory listing for PFAS reduction?
  • Does that listing cover the compound I am concerned about?
  • Will the installation suit the household’s drinking-water use and plumbing?
  • What are the replacement interval and recurring costs?
  • If it is RO, have I considered the concentrated-water stream?
  • Can I follow the maintenance instructions and replace parts on schedule?
