The right laptop for home depends on what you do, which software you need, and whether you value a larger screen or easy portability. These five current options cover everyday use, a lower-cost Apple entry point, Windows compatibility, creative work, and basic browsing. They are use-case recommendations—not winners from a single head-to-head test—so check the exact configuration and current listing before buying.

1. Apple MacBook Air 13-inch M5 (2026): broad everyday use on macOS
The 13-inch MacBook Air M5 is a strong candidate for browsing, streaming, video calls, and general productivity if macOS supports your applications. Tom’s Guide names it its best laptop for most people and lists 512 GB of base storage. Its battery test recorded 15 hours 30 minutes; that is an editorial test result, not a promise of how long it will last with your workload, settings, and network conditions. Tom’s Guide listed a $1,299 starting price for the 13-inch model when its guide was accessed in October 2026; check current pricing and configuration. Tom’s Guide’s laptop guide and RTINGS’ 2026 laptop recommendations provide further context on its general productivity, multitasking, programming, and light creative-work suitability. WIRED’s September 2026 guide also recommends the MacBook Air and notes that its price had moved from $1,099 to $1,299. WIRED’s laptop guide

2. Apple MacBook Neo: a lower-cost way into macOS
The MacBook Neo is the lower-cost Apple option in this shortlist. Tom’s Guide lists an A18 Pro processor, 8 GB of RAM, and either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage, with a weight of 2.7 pounds. Those specifications may suit basic household tasks, but weigh the memory and storage against your applications, number of open tasks, and file collection before choosing a configuration. The guide also flags two trade-offs: the keyboard has no backlight, and the laptop lacks Thunderbolt. Tom’s Guide’s laptop guide
Best fit: Someone who wants macOS for lighter home tasks and has confirmed the configuration meets their needs. Check first: Storage capacity, RAM, keyboard backlighting, and whether its connectors support your intended peripherals.
3. Dell XPS 13 (2026): compact Windows option
The XPS 13 is a compact Windows candidate, particularly if you rely on Windows-specific software. Tom’s Guide lists a 13.4-inch 2.5K touchscreen and a weight of 2.2 pounds. In its continuous web-browsing battery test, it recorded 14 hours 29 minutes; actual runtime will vary with usage and settings. The review flags a weak webcam and limited connectivity, listing two USB-C ports and no headphone jack, so check whether you will need adapters or a compatible hub for your desk setup. RTINGS also identifies the Dell as an option for Windows-specific software or more memory for demanding workloads; verify the memory in the exact configuration you are considering. 4. HP OmniBook 5: a larger screen for creative tasks
HP positions the OmniBook 5, formerly called Pavilion Plus, for photo editing, graphic design, and content creation. Its buying guide lists a 16-inch 2560 × 1600 IPS touchscreen, 16 GB of memory, and a 512 GB SSD. These are manufacturer specifications and intended-use claims, not independent performance-test results. A 16-inch display can be appealing for a mostly desk-based setup, but consider its size if you plan to move the laptop around the house often. Match the workload and operating system
Web browsing, email, streaming, and video calls are generally lighter needs than creative applications, large projects, virtual machines, or memory-intensive software. Make a list of the applications you actually use and confirm they support the laptop’s operating system. If an essential program is Windows-only, that can rule out a Mac; if your required software supports macOS, either platform may be viable. Compare the configuration, not just the model name
Model names often cover multiple configurations. Before buying, verify the processor, RAM, storage, display, and ports on the specific retailer or manufacturer listing. Think about whether your files will fit the drive and how many demanding applications you tend to keep open. Do not assume that memory or storage can be upgraded later; check the exact model’s specifications and upgrade options. Dell’s guide explains the factors to compare, while Tom’s Guide’s MacBook Neo listing illustrates how storage can vary within a model. Dell’s laptop buying guide · Tom’s Guide’s laptop guide
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose screen size and portability for your home
A larger screen may be more comfortable if the laptop will spend most of its time on a desk. A smaller, lighter model is easier to carry between rooms. Consider the display’s resolution and panel type as well as diagonal size: HP’s OmniBook 5 guide lists a 16-inch 2560 × 1600 IPS touchscreen, while the XPS 13 listing describes a 13.4-inch 2.5K touchscreen. These are different size and specification combinations, not a direct measure of which display is better. HP’s laptop buying guide · Tom’s Guide’s laptop guide
Read battery figures as test results
Battery life depends on workload, display settings, wireless use, and other conditions. The reported 15 hours 30 minutes for the MacBook Air M5 and 14 hours 29 minutes for the XPS 13 are results from Tom’s Guide’s tests; the latter specifically used continuous web browsing. Use such figures as results from the named test procedures, not as guaranteed hours at home. Tom’s Guide’s laptop guide
Check ports against your desk setup
Before choosing a laptop, list the devices you expect to connect: an external monitor, headphones, storage drives, or other peripherals. Compare those needs with the exact machine’s connectors. A hub or dock may help when ports are limited, but compatibility depends on the laptop and the accessories. Tom’s Guide notes the XPS 13’s two USB-C ports and lack of a headphone jack. HP describes Thunderbolt 4 on the OmniBook X as supporting docks and external monitors; that is a separate model, so do not assume the OmniBook 5 has the same port.
