They are a task-based shortlist drawn from Milwaukee’s product specifications, not a tested ranking; the right pick depends on the work and, for cordless models, whether you already have compatible M12 batteries and a charger.
Which small Milwaukee tool fits the job?
| Tool | Best fit | Power or package note |
|---|---|---|
| M12 FUEL Installation Drill/Driver (2505-20) | Installation work in tight or awkward spaces | Tool-only listing includes four attachments, a contractor bag, and belt clip; battery is not included. |
| M12 ROVER Multi-Directional Flood Light with PACKOUT Compatibility (2350-20) | Portable, repositionable lighting | Up to four hours on high with an M12 XC4.0 battery pack; runtime depends on that battery and mode. |
| FASTBACK Compact Folding Utility Knife (48-22-1500) | Pocket carry and cutting | Manual hand tool; Milwaukee lists a weight of 0.24 pound. |
| 12 ft Compact Tape Measure (48-22-6612) | Short-distance measuring | 12-foot blade; manufacturer also describes up to 12 feet of reach. |
| M12 Subcompact Brushless 1/4-inch Hex Impact Driver (3450-20) | Compact powered fastening | Tool-only listing; battery and charger are sold separately. |
For awkward installation access: M12 FUEL Installation Drill/Driver
The 2505-20 is the most versatile choice here for tight installation tasks because its four dedicated heads cover several access needs: a 3/8-inch chuck, offset driver, 1/4-inch hex, and right-angle attachment. Milwaukee says the heads can be fitted in 16 positions, and lists up to 300 inch-pounds of torque. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results.

Milwaukee lists electrical, cabinet installation, maintenance and repair, HVAC, automotive, and remodel work among its applications. Its tool-only package includes the four attachments, contractor bag, and belt clip, but not a battery. Milwaukee describes the product as having “4 dedicated solutions”; that is the manufacturer’s product-page wording.
For portable light: M12 ROVER Multi-Directional Flood Light
The 2350-20 is a compact lighting option when a fixed work light is inconvenient. Milwaukee lists up to 1,200 lumens, three output modes, and a movable head. It can be positioned with a magnet, integrated hang hook, nail hook, or the included PACKOUT twist-to-lock mount.

Milwaukee says the light runs up to four hours on high with an M12 XC4.0 battery pack, so that runtime is specific to the stated battery and mode. The product page also lists IP54 dust and water resistance, impact resistance up to 9 feet, and USB-C device charging. Milwaukee lists a 5-year tool warranty and a limited-lifetime LED warranty.
For pocket cutting: FASTBACK Compact Folding Utility Knife
The 48-22-1500 is the non-powered pick for cutting tasks. Its press-and-flip opening and tool-free blade change are the central convenience features. Milwaukee also lists a wire belt clip, scoring blade holder, metal extension over the release button intended to help prevent accidental blade removal, and a tether-ready lanyard hole.
Rank #2
- RECESSED FORWARD - BACKWARD SWITCH on the back of the head prevents you from accidental actuations in the middle of an important job
- LOW PROFILE HEAD DESIGN allows you to work in an engine bay without issue
- ONBOARD FUEL GAUGE: Lights on the side of the unit will let you know how much power you have left
- LED LIGHTING on the front of the unit allows you to see your job in dimly lit conditions
- REDLINK INTELLIGENCE: A smart chip in this unit allows it to communicate with the M12 battery plugged into it. This prevents it from receiving too much power and overheating, saving it from unnecessary damage
Milwaukee lists dimensions of 6.15 by 1.25 by 0.9 inches and a weight of 0.24 pound. Consider whether the folding format and listed carry features suit the way you store and use a utility knife.

For measuring: 12 ft Compact Tape Measure
The 48-22-6612 is the simplest choice when the task is taking measurements rather than using a powered tool. Its specifications include a 12-foot SAE blade, nylon coating, fractional scale, five-point reinforced frame, and stamped steel belt clip. The product page separately describes up to 12 feet of reach; that should not be confused with a longer blade.
Rank #3
- INCLUDES: • (1) 3404-20 M12 FUEL™ Hammer Drill Driver Bare Tool • (1) 3
Milwaukee lists body dimensions of 2.38 inches long and high by 1.32 inches wide, plus a limited lifetime warranty. The short blade length can suit everyday measuring while taking less space than a longer tape.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For compact powered fastening: M12 Subcompact Brushless Impact Driver
The 3450-20 is a 1/4-inch hex impact driver for fastening tasks where a compact powered tool is useful. Milwaukee lists a 4.3-inch length, 2.0-inch width, up to 1,100 inch-pounds of torque, up to 3,000 RPM, and up to 4,100 impacts per minute. Its page states a weight of 1.7 pounds with battery.
An impact driver is not the same choice as a drill/driver: this model is aimed at driving fasteners with a 1/4-inch hex interface, while the installation drill/driver above emphasizes adaptable heads for varied access and installation tasks. The 3450-20 is listed tool-only, so battery and charger are sold separately.
How to choose without buying the wrong package
- Start with the task. Choose the installation drill/driver for access and head options, the ROVER for portable light, the FASTBACK for pocket cutting, the tape for measuring, or the impact driver for powered fastening.
- Check what cordless gear you already own. For the M12 models, confirm battery and charger compatibility and whether the exact listing is a bare tool or a kit. The package contents can change what else you need to buy.
- Match the tool to how you carry it. For the knife and tape, the listed dimensions and carry features may matter more than power specifications.
- Do not treat “useful” as a universal ranking. These are five different tools for five different jobs; no comparative test or representative survey establishes one as the most useful overall.
An informal discussion in the Milwaukee Tool community asked, “What’s a good small/random M12 tool everyone should have?” That is one reader’s question, not a representative survey of owners or evidence of product popularity.
