A guitar that looks right may still need a specific wireless receiver, cable, adapter, or setup software. For a new purchase, the PDP Riffmaster is a current option; for used gear, confirm the exact model and that its required accessories are included before paying.
Start with the game and platform
Write down the game title, the device you will play on, and—if it is a console—the console generation. Then check support for that specific combination. Clone Hero’s controller guide covers guitar controllers, while Activision’s classic Guitar Hero FAQ reflects that supported controllers and requirements can differ by title and console.

The Clone Hero Wiki lists the PDP Riffmaster as a new guitar-controller option. GamesRadar+ describes versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch / Switch 2. Its review reports using the PS5 version with Clone Hero on PC and notes possible PC-compatibility issues with the Xbox version. That is one reported setup, not proof that every version works with every PC, game, or console. Check the exact version and the game’s current support before ordering.

Used: Guitar Hero or Rock Band instruments
A used original may suit a legacy setup, but listings vary in condition and completeness. The Clone Hero Wiki recommends checking local second-hand sources and cautions that used originals on Amazon may be overpriced. Treat availability and asking prices as listing-specific, not as a stable market price.
Before buying, ask for the exact guitar model and platform version, and confirm that the required receiver, cable, or adapter is included. Inspect photos for worn controls, damaged connectors, battery-compartment corrosion, and other signs of wear. Compare the cost of a complete working setup—not just the guitar body.

Check the connection and required accessories
Guitar controllers may connect by USB cable, a platform-specific wireless receiver, Bluetooth, or a separate adapter. A receiver that fits physically is not necessarily compatible. The Clone Hero receiver and dongle reference maps particular controllers to receivers and records incompatibilities, including receivers that look similar but do not interchange.
For example, that reference says an Xbox 360 receiver works with Xbox 360 five-fret Guitar Hero and Rock Band instruments, but not Rock Band 4 or Guitar Hero Live guitars. Match the receiver to the exact instrument rather than relying on appearance or a generic product description.

For Rock Band 4 instruments on PS4, Epic Games Support distinguishes newer Bluetooth pairing from older instruments that require the original adapter. Its instruction is explicit: “Legacy controllers require the original adapter.” Read Epic’s PS4 sync instructions for the applicable instrument and pairing steps.
Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the destination: Write down the game, platform, and console generation or PC operating system.
- Identify the instrument: Get the exact model and platform version from the listing or product documentation.
- Verify the connection: Determine whether it uses wired USB, Bluetooth, a model-matched wireless receiver, or a separate adapter.
- Check completeness: Confirm that the required receiver or dongle, USB or breakaway cable, and any other necessary accessories are included and working.
- Check setup needs: Find out whether the game requires additional software or a mapper, and whether it must remain running while you play.
- Price the whole setup: Add the cost of any missing compatible accessories before comparing listings.
- Inspect condition: For used gear, check controls, connectors, and the battery compartment, and ask for evidence that the instrument connects.
Factor in layout and feel
Fret arrangements and extra button rows differ between instruments, and comfort is personal. If possible, try a layout before buying. There is no universal best layout established by the compatibility information above; prioritize a comfortable feel only after confirming that the guitar works with your game and platform.
