Then compare current local prices, check ray-tracing and upscaling support in the games you play, and verify that the exact card fits your case and power supply.
1. Set your 1440p target before comparing cards
Think about what you want the system to do at 2560×1440. A player prioritizing competitive frame rates may prefer lower settings and a high-refresh display; someone focused on visual detail may accept a lower frame rate or enable demanding effects such as ray tracing. Your regular games matter as much as your preferred settings.

AMD identifies video memory, compute units, performance per dollar, and upscaling technologies as useful 1440p purchase criteria in its graphics-card guidance. Treat that as manufacturer advice, then validate performance with independent tests.
2. Compare 1440p results in games like yours
Look for independent benchmarks at 1440p and settings close to your own. A product tier or specification-sheet number cannot tell you how a card performs in every game. Review game-by-game results where possible; an aggregate score is useful for broad comparison, but it is not a guarantee for a particular title or PC.

Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU hierarchy provides separate 1440p Ultra raster and ray-tracing tables. Its overall ranking spans 19 games and uses equal-weight geometric means. It excludes upscaling and frame-generation results from its direct performance table, which helps keep those results distinct from directly rendered frames.
As a dated US-market reference, Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 overall table reported these 1440p results and median street prices:
| Graphics card | 1440p overall result | Median street price | Listed MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5070 | 74.0 FPS | $659 | $549 |
| Radeon RX 9070 | 74.8 FPS | $634 | $549 |
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | 85.3 FPS | $759 | $599 |
These figures are a benchmark-suite and market snapshot, not current quotes or a forecast for every game. The same hierarchy’s separate raster-only 1440p Ultra table lists the RX 9070 and RTX 5070 at 104.0 FPS each, and the RX 9070 XT at 116.5 FPS. Those are results from a different measure; do not combine them with the overall figures as though they came from the same score.
3. Compare performance with the price you can actually pay
MSRP is a reference, not proof that a card is available at that price or a good value today. Check current prices in your country and compare the exact board-partner models for sale. As a quick first pass for raster gaming, divide the price by the relevant benchmark FPS; a lower price per frame can indicate better value within that comparison. Use the same benchmark, resolution, and settings for every card, and remember that price per frame does not account for ray tracing, features, cooling, noise, or power.
The October 2026 US snapshot above put the RX 9070 slightly below the RTX 5070 in median street price and slightly above it in the overall result, while the RX 9070 XT posted a higher result at a higher median price. That does not establish a universal winner: local pricing, game-specific performance, and which features you value can change the decision.
4. Separate raster performance, ray tracing, and generated frames
Native raster performance
If you primarily play without ray tracing, compare raster results in your games and use those results for a like-for-like price comparison. The raster-only figures above are one example of why it is useful to consult a dedicated raster table rather than infer raster speed from a combined ranking.
Ray tracing
Ray tracing can change the relative performance of cards. Check a separate ray-tracing table and, where available, tests in the games and settings you care about. Do not assume that a card leading in raster performance will lead in ray tracing.

Upscaling and frame generation
Upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower rendering resolution; frame generation creates additional displayed frames. These features can improve the experience when supported and well implemented, but generated frames are not the same measure as native rendering performance. Image quality and game support vary, so check the specific game rather than relying on a family-level feature list.
NVIDIA lists DLSS 4 features—including Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation—for its RTX 5070 family. AMD lists FSR technologies for the RX 9070 XT. These manufacturer pages describe product-family features; check whether your chosen game supports the feature you want.
5. Treat VRAM as one part of the decision
Video memory holds data such as textures and shaders. More capacity can help accommodate demanding assets and settings, but capacity alone does not rank a GPU’s performance. Consider it alongside measured speed, the games you play, and the settings you intend to use.
For the cards discussed here, AMD lists 16 GB of GDDR6 for the RX 9070 XT, while NVIDIA lists 12 GB of GDDR7 for the RTX 5070. Those are product specifications, not a direct comparison of gaming performance.
AMD’s VRAM material gives an illustrative Far Cry 6 result of 11.7 GB peak usage at 1440p with maximum settings and ray tracing. AMD conducted the test in May 2023 on an RX 6750 XT 12 GB and compared it with an RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB. It is an older, vendor-run test on a particular setup—not a universal 1440p memory requirement or a benchmark of current games. AMD’s VRAM material

Specifications can differ between reference designs and partner cards, so check the exact model listed by the retailer. Confirm that your power supply has the right capacity and cables, that the card physically fits with room for airflow, and that its outputs work with your monitor.
| Reference specification | GeForce RTX 5070 | Radeon RX 9070 XT |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer power guidance | NVIDIA lists a 650 W minimum system power rating for its reference documentation. | AMD recommends a 750 W minimum PSU; this is a recommendation, not a claim that every system draws the same power. |
| Power connection | At least two PCIe 8-pin cables with the supplied adapter, or a 360 W or greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable, in NVIDIA’s reference documentation. | Two 8-pin power connectors. |
| Board power | Not stated in the cited NVIDIA reference documentation. | 304 W typical board power, listed by AMD. |
| Card dimensions | 244 × 112 × 41 mm clearance envelope in NVIDIA’s reference documentation; partner cards may vary. | Not stated as a universal dimension in the cited AMD product information; check the exact board-partner model. |
For the RTX 5070, NVIDIA says specifications can vary by add-in-card maker. Its family page and reference guide are useful starting points, but the exact card’s specification takes precedence. For the RX 9070 XT, use AMD’s product specifications and the partner maker’s dimensions and cooling details.
Also consider your monitor’s refresh rate. Tom’s Hardware notes that a fixed-refresh 60 Hz display cannot show all the frames a faster GPU may produce. That does not make a monitor upgrade necessary; it means the display affects how much of a GPU’s higher frame output you can see.

7. Make the choice against your own priorities
Use these cards as examples of different trade-offs, not as a universal ranking:
Quick Recap
- Radeon RX 9070: A strong 1440p raster option in the cited suite, with 16 GB GDDR6 listed by AMD. Compare its current price with the RTX 5070, and check your ray-tracing workload and the exact card’s power and cooling.
- GeForce RTX 5070: Its October 2026 overall average was close to the RX 9070’s in Tom’s Hardware’s table; NVIDIA lists 12 GB GDDR7 and DLSS 4 features. Compare street price, ray-tracing results, support in your games, and exact-card fit.
- Radeon RX 9070 XT: It had the higher 1440p average of these three in the cited suite and AMD lists 16 GB GDDR6. Decide whether the performance difference is worth the current price premium and whether your PSU, case, and game mix suit the card.
Before ordering, run through a final check:
- Find independent 1440p results for your main games and preferred settings.
- Compare the exact models’ current local prices using the same performance measure.
- Review raster and ray-tracing results separately; confirm desired upscaling or frame-generation support in each game.
- Check VRAM capacity against your settings and games, without treating it as a stand-alone speed rating.
- Verify the exact card’s power recommendation, available PSU cables, dimensions, cooling, and display outputs against your PC.
- Consider whether your monitor’s refresh rate matches the frame-rate target you want to experience.
