Mobile is the biggest part of China’s gaming market, while PC offers more ways to play and consoles appeal to people seeking particular games or a dedicated living-room setup. Before spending money, check whether your specific games, services, and hardware are available for your region.
What China’s gaming market says—and what it doesn’t
China’s domestic game market reported RMB 350.789 billion in sales revenue and 683 million users in 2025, according to the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association (CADPA). The user count is a market-level figure, not a count of users on any one platform. Mobile accounted for 73.29% of domestic revenue; client games accounted for 22.28%; web games made up 1.23%. Those categories do not cover the whole market, and the remainder should not be treated as console revenue. CADPA’s 2025 industry report provides the annual figures.

In that report, domestic mobile-game revenue was RMB 257.076 billion, up 7.92% year over year. Client-game revenue was RMB 78.16 billion, up 14.97%, while console-game revenue was RMB 8.362 billion, up 86.33%. Console revenue grew quickly from a much smaller reported base. These market figures describe sales, not which platform offers the best value or experience for an individual player.
More recent figures cover a different period and should not be compared directly with full-year totals: a Shanghai government report put domestic gaming sales at RMB 188.45 billion in the first half of 2026, with 684 million users. It reported mobile revenue of RMB 135.21 billion and PC revenue of RMB 45.29 billion; PC revenue was up 27.92% year over year. Shanghai’s H1 2026 report does not provide a like-for-like full-year comparison.

How to decide: start with your games and setup
- List the games you actually want to play. Check the publisher’s official information for the exact game, edition, platform, and region. A platform’s overall popularity does not guarantee that a particular game or service is accessible to you.
- Account for devices you already own. If your phone runs the games you want, mobile may avoid a separate hardware purchase. If you already have a suitable computer, PC gaming may require less additional spending than buying a new device.
- Choose the controls and screen you prefer. Consider touch controls on a phone, keyboard and mouse or a gamepad on PC, and a controller with a larger display for a console setup. These are practical considerations, not results of a China-specific player survey.
- Compare the whole setup cost. Include the device and any necessary accessories, then check game and service requirements. Hardware prices and support can vary by model and region; the available market figures do not establish a like-for-like cost comparison.
- Check regional access before paying. Confirm the official distribution route, account or store region, online-service access, hardware warranty, and local availability for the exact device and game. Do not assume that a storefront, console model, or service is available to every mainland China user.
Mobile: the convenient default if your phone fits the job
Mobile is a strong starting choice if you already own a capable smartphone, value portability, and want games designed around phone controls or brief sessions. Its 73.29% share of China’s domestic game revenue in 2025 shows its market scale, but does not prove it will suit every player.
- It may suit you if: you want to play on a device you carry anyway, and the games you care about work well on its screen and controls.
- Consider the trade-offs: touch controls and a small screen may not suit every genre. Optional purchases can add up over time, and controller compatibility varies by game and device.
- Verify first: check the phone’s operating-system compatibility, the game’s official distribution route, and the account region. If you want physical controls, check the controller’s connector and compatibility rather than assuming it works with every phone or game.
For example, Backbone describes Backbone One as a phone gaming controller that can also support streaming from a PC or console. That product description is not confirmation of compatibility with every device, service, or game in China; check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and local availability.

PC: choose it for flexibility, with device-specific trade-offs
PC is worth considering if you want keyboard-and-mouse or gamepad controls, desktop or laptop use, or a device that can serve other purposes. The 2025 client-game category is a large part of the domestic market, and PC revenue grew in the first half of 2026. However, the source’s client-game category should not be read as a census of every PC game or distribution method.
- It may suit you if: the games you want are available through services you can access, you value a choice of form factors, or you will use the computer beyond gaming.
- Consider the trade-offs: hardware costs vary widely. Performance, portability, maintenance, and game compatibility depend on the specific machine. A handheld PC is not automatically equivalent to a console in ease of use, battery life, or compatibility.
- Verify first: check each game and official service, the device’s warranty and support region, and the total cost of the hardware you need.
A handheld PC is one option within the PC category. Valve describes Steam Deck OLED as “Powerful, portable PC gaming, designed for comfort and a console-like user experience.” This is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independent performance assessment or confirmation of China availability or support. Consult Valve’s Steam Deck page for its product information.

Console: a focused choice when its games and setup fit
A console may make sense if you want a dedicated device, particular console games, or a living-room setup and are comfortable with the associated ecosystem and cost. China’s reported console-game revenue was much smaller than mobile and client-game revenue in 2025, though it grew 86.33% year over year. That market figure alone cannot establish which models, games, or services are available—or whether a console is good value for you.
- It may suit you if: the games you want are confirmed for the specific console and region, and you prefer a dedicated device and controller-based play.
- Consider the trade-offs: models, game editions, services, and account regions can differ. A headline about console-market growth does not tell you how broad a particular console’s locally accessible library is.
- Verify first: confirm the exact model, game edition, account or store region, online-service access, warranty, and local availability with the relevant publisher or hardware vendor.
Quick comparison
| Platform | Best starting case | Main trade-offs | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile | You own a capable phone, want convenience, and prefer games designed for phone play. | Touch controls or a smaller screen may not suit every game; optional purchases and controller compatibility vary. | Phone and OS compatibility, official distribution route, account region, and any controller’s connector and compatibility. |
| PC | You want desktop, laptop, or handheld options, flexible controls, or a computer with uses beyond gaming. | Hardware cost, performance, portability, maintenance, and compatibility vary by device. | Specific games and services, warranty and support region, and total device cost. |
| Console | You want a dedicated device, particular console games, or living-room play. | Model, ecosystem, account region, content availability, and costs differ. | Exact model and game edition, store and online-service access, warranty, and local availability. |
So, which platform should you choose?
Choose mobile if the games you want work well on a phone you already own and convenience matters most. Choose PC if you value a wider range of device and control options and can confirm access to the games and services you want. Choose a console when its specific games and dedicated setup justify the purchase. In every case, make the decision around verified game and regional availability, not market share alone.
