In 2026, LCS teams qualify for international events through three separate regional splits: the Split 1 playoff winner goes to First Stand, two LCS teams qualify for MSI through Split 2, and the top three Split 3 playoff finishers qualify for Worlds. MSI results can also affect Worlds invitations and regional seeding, so Worlds qualification is not determined by the LCS split route alone.
These rules are specific to the 2026 season. Riot says regional split formats differ, so the LCS schedule and brackets should not be assumed to apply to other leagues.

How the 2026 season is organized
Riot’s 2026 season overview lays out the year as regional Split 1, First Stand, regional Split 2, MSI, regional Split 3, and Worlds. Each region runs its own split format and style; the international event sequence is shared, but domestic schedules and playoff rules can vary. Riot’s 2026 season handbook is the reference for those season-wide rules.
For the LCS, the three split routes are distinct:
| 2026 LCS split | Regular season | Playoffs | International qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Split 1 | Single round robin; best-of-three matches | Top six teams; modified double elimination | Playoff winner qualifies for First Stand |
| Split 2 | Format not stated in the cited season overview | Format not stated in the cited season overview | Two LCS teams qualify for MSI |
| Split 3 | Single round robin; best-of-three matches | Top six teams; modified double elimination with a gauntlet-style losers bracket | Top three playoff finishers qualify for Worlds |
The Split 1 details come from the LCS entry in Riot’s 2026 Split 1 handbook; the Split 3 details are in its 2026 Split 3 LCS entry. The season overview gives the regional MSI allocation but does not establish the LCS Split 2 bracket, so it is better not to infer one from another league’s format.

What the LCS routes mean
Split 1: the First Stand route
LCS Split 1 begins with a single round robin in best-of-three series. The six highest-placed teams enter a modified double-elimination playoff, and the playoff champion earns the LCS place at First Stand. That is the LCS qualification rule in Riot’s 2026 Split 1 handbook.
Split 2: the MSI route
The 2026 season overview sends two teams from each region other than CBLOL to MSI; CBLOL sends one. The LCS therefore has two MSI representatives. The cited overview establishes the number of LCS qualifiers, but not the league’s Split 2 match format or the precise domestic mechanism used to select those teams. Riot’s season overview
Split 3: the Worlds route
In Split 3, LCS teams play a single round robin of best-of-three matches. The top six enter a modified double-elimination playoff, whose losers bracket uses a gauntlet-style progression. The top three finishers in those playoffs qualify for Worlds, according to the 2026 LCS Split 3 handbook.

How First Stand works
First Stand follows Split 1. Each region sends its split winner, while the LCK and LPL also send their second-place teams. Riot’s 2026 handbook describes an opening group phase made up of two groups of four in double-elimination brackets, followed by a single-elimination best-of-five phase. The winning region receives a bye directly into the MSI bracket stage. Riot’s 2026 season handbook
That bye is a benefit for the winning region at MSI; it does not replace the ordinary regional qualification routes that determine which teams represent regions there.
How MSI qualification and format work
Riot’s March 22, 2026 update lists an 11-team MSI field: two teams each from the LCK, LCS, LCP, LEC, and LPL, plus one from CBLOL. The update describes a four-team double-elimination Play-In from which one team advances to the bracket stage. Seven teams start in that stage: each region’s first seed and the second seed from the highest-ranked two-seed region at First Stand. Riot’s March 22, 2026 MSI and Worlds update

There is a material difference between that dated update and the wording on Riot’s MSI standings and overview page: the overview describes a four-team best-of-five GSL and says both 2-0 and 2-1 teams qualify, which does not match the update’s statement that one Play-In team advances. For the 2026 progression, the dated update is the clearer reference; consult the live official bracket for the event’s final match-by-match details rather than combining the two descriptions.
MSI matters beyond the trophy. Riot says the champion qualifies directly for Worlds, while the champion’s home region must still qualify that team through its domestic playoffs to retain the invitation. The region finishing second at MSI receives an additional Worlds seed for its domestic league. These MSI-based places affect the Worlds field alongside regional qualification. The standard LCS route is through Split 3: its top three playoff finishers qualify. Riot’s March 22 update also describes MSI-based places, so the full Worlds field is not simply a count of the teams qualifying through their regional splits.

Riot lists a 19-team Worlds field for 2026: three teams apiece from the LCK, LCS, LCP, LEC, and LPL; two from CBLOL; the MSI champion; and one additional team from the MSI runner-up’s region. If the MSI champion is to keep that invitation, Riot says it must also qualify for its home region’s playoffs. The update describes a four-team, double-elimination best-of-five Play-In, with one team advancing to Swiss. Riot’s March 22, 2026 update
As announced on October 7, 2026, Worlds is scheduled for October 15–November 14 across Los Angeles, Allen, Texas, and Brooklyn, New York. The announced schedule places Play-In in Los Angeles from October 15–18; Swiss in Allen from October 23–31; quarterfinals and semifinals in Allen from November 3–8; and the Grand Final in Brooklyn on November 14. Start with the specific season handbook for each league. Riot explicitly says regional split formats differ, and a split’s name alone does not tell you how teams qualify. Compare these elements instead:
- Regular-season structure: whether teams play a round robin, Swiss stage, or groups.
- Series length: whether matches are best-of-one, best-of-three, or another format.
- Playoff design: the number of teams admitted and whether the bracket is single or double elimination, or uses another structure.
- International allocation: how many places the region receives for each event and how domestic results assign them.
- International consequences: whether an event result changes later Worlds access or regional seeding.
Keep those regional rules separate from event-wide rules. For example, the LCS Split 3 playoff determines its three standard Worlds qualifiers, while MSI results can add an invitation or a further regional seed under Riot’s 2026 update.
