Compare sustained-load cooling, controls that fit the games you play, battery and charging behavior, display features, and the length of software support in your region. Manufacturer specifications can narrow a shortlist, but they do not establish which phone performs better over a long session.
1. Check whether cooling can sustain your games
A fast processor may deliver strong performance briefly yet slow down as a phone heats up. For long sessions, look for details about the cooling system and high-performance modes, then seek independent sustained-load testing of the exact model and configuration. The manufacturer materials cited here describe features, but do not provide neutral head-to-head measurements.

What the current examples establish
ASUS announced the ROG Phone 9 series on January 7, 2025, with Snapdragon 8 Elite, GameCool 9, and a 6.78-inch 185 Hz display. These are manufacturer-announced specifications, not independent evidence of sustained performance. ASUS’s ROG Phone 9 announcement describes the series’ features.
REDMAGIC’s official FAQ says the highest performance mode heats the phone faster and recommends an external cooler for frequent use of that mode. Treat this as manufacturer advice, not a guarantee that an added fan will prevent overheating in every game or environment. REDMAGIC’s 11 Pro FAQ provides the company’s description.

When an external cooler makes sense
A clip-on phone cooler may be worth considering if you regularly play demanding games for extended periods, use an aggressive performance mode, and have confirmed the cooler fits your phone and case. It is an optional accessory, not a requirement for every player. Check whether it obstructs buttons, cameras, or a controller mount, and whether the phone can be charged comfortably while it is attached.
2. Decide which controls suit your games and grip
Extra controls help only when they match the game’s inputs and your preferred hand position. Compare built-in shoulder controls with a separate controller by checking what can be mapped, how the controls feel during your usual grip, and whether the games you play accept those inputs.

Built-in shoulder triggers
Some gaming phones use customizable touch or ultrasonic zones on the shoulders. ASUS support describes AirTriggers as ultrasonic zones that can be mapped to game actions and adjusted for sensitivity. Its instructions were last updated June 6, 2023, so menu names and available settings may differ by model or software version. ASUS’s AirTriggers support page explains the feature and setup.
Triggers can make actions such as aiming or firing easier to reach without adding a controller, but they are not a universal advantage: mapping options, game compatibility, and comfort depend on the particular game and player. Test whether your fingers rest naturally on the trigger areas and whether using them interferes with your normal touch controls.

Separate controllers
A separate controller can add physical buttons or sticks, but fit and compatibility matter as much as the button count. ASUS lists the Tessen mobile controller for the ROG Phone 9 series and an optional AeroActive Cooler X Pro; check the current regional product listing for supported models and accessory details. REDMAGIC lists its Cyber Gamepad as compatible with Android and iOS as well as other platforms. Those are vendor compatibility statements, so confirm the exact phone, operating system, game, and connection method before buying. ASUS’s product page and REDMAGIC’s FAQ describe their respective options.
3. Match battery and charging to your session
Battery capacity alone cannot predict gaming runtime. How long a phone lasts depends on the game, brightness, refresh rate, network use, performance mode, and other conditions. Compare capacity alongside charging options and whether the phone can bypass battery charging while plugged in, then look for independent runtime testing under a workload similar to yours.

ASUS lists a typical 5,800 mAh battery and bypass charging for the ROG Phone 9 series. Bypass charging is relevant if you often play while connected to power, but check the model’s instructions and behavior rather than assuming it eliminates heat or battery wear in every circumstance. These specifications do not establish how many hours the phone will run in a particular game. ASUS’s specifications page lists the battery and charging feature.

Refresh rate and touch features matter only to the extent that the games you play support them and you notice the difference. Compare display size, refresh-rate support, and any stated touch features against your preferred games; a high maximum refresh rate does not prove that every game runs at that rate. ASUS lists a 6.78-inch 185 Hz display for the ROG Phone 9 series, but that manufacturer specification is not an independent assessment of game performance. ASUS’s product announcement gives the listed display specification.

5. Compare software support for your region and ownership period
Update commitments differ by manufacturer, model generation, and region. Compare the promised Android-version upgrades and security-update period for the exact model sold where you live; a commitment is not a measure of update quality, delivery speed, or the phone’s overall software experience.

Because regional policies can differ, check the official page for the version you can actually buy before deciding how long you plan to keep the phone.
6. Balance gaming features against everyday use
A gaming-first phone still has to work for your ordinary routine. Consider whether its software suits you, whether its size and weight are comfortable to carry, whether its camera meets your needs, and whether charging or gaming accessories fit your setup. Those tradeoffs are personal; gaming-focused features alone do not establish that a phone is the best all-around choice.
