If you would rather have a mainstream flagship for everyday use as well as games, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max are alternatives to investigate—but the available sources do not establish that either outperforms the ROG in gaming.
Which gaming phone should you consider instead?
ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro: the dedicated-gaming pick
ASUS lists the ROG Phone 9 Pro with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform and Adreno 830 GPU, plus gaming-focused controls and software. Its AirTriggers provide dedicated inputs, while Game Genie includes features such as macros, key mapping, and bypass charging. These are useful distinctions if you want controls and settings designed around play rather than a conventional flagship phone with strong general-purpose hardware. ASUS’s specifications describe the device’s listed capabilities.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max: mainstream alternatives
Current gaming-phone coverage identifies both as alternatives for people who want a mainstream flagship as well as a phone for games. That makes them reasonable candidates if camera features, general everyday use, or an existing software ecosystem matter alongside gaming. The available information does not provide current official specifications for these models or a controlled gaming comparison against the ROG Phone 9 Pro, so treat them as options to compare—not proven gaming winners. Tom’s Guide’s gaming-phone guide provides editorial context for these candidates.

Gaming-phone coverage also identifies the Galaxy Z Fold 7 as a large-screen option. A foldable’s appeal here is its screen format; the sources available do not establish its gaming performance, regional specifications, or whether its larger display suits the games you play. Check those details before choosing it specifically for gaming. Tom’s Guide’s guide is the source for its inclusion as an option.

What the ROG Phone 9 Pro’s display and configurations offer
ASUS specifies a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 × 1080. The display supports LTPO operation from 1 to 120 Hz, can reach 165 Hz in system settings, and can reach 185 Hz in Game Genie. Those are supported device modes, not a guarantee that a particular game will render at the same rate; game support and settings matter. ASUS lists a typical battery capacity of 5,800 mAh and two configurations: 16 GB of RAM with 512 GB of storage, or, for the Pro Edition, 24 GB of RAM with 1 TB of storage. Confirm which configuration is sold in your region. ASUS’s specification page has the listed details.
Cooling and accessories
ASUS identifies the AeroActive Cooler X Pro as an accessory for the ROG Phone 9 Pro and claims it can provide up to 29% more effective cooling. That figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified test result. Check the cooler’s compatibility with the exact phone model and whether it is included or sold separately in your market. ASUS’s product page describes the accessory.

How to choose for the games you actually play
Refresh rates and gaming features matter only insofar as they fit your games, play style, and everyday needs. Before buying, compare the candidates on the points that can change the experience:
- Controls and software: Decide whether dedicated triggers, macros, key mapping, or charging controls while gaming are important to you.
- Performance over a long session: Look for comparable, independently tested sustained-performance and thermal results. The available sources do not provide a controlled comparison across these phones.
- Screen and game support: Check whether your games support the refresh rates and display format you want; a phone’s maximum mode does not mean every title uses it.
- Battery in practice: A listed capacity alone does not show how long a phone lasts while playing your specific games.
- Everyday priorities: Weigh gaming features against camera needs, software ecosystem, and the phone’s other roles in your day.
- Local purchase details: Verify regional configuration, warranty, seller authorization, current price, stock, and accessory bundles before ordering.
Bottom line
Choose the ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro if dedicated gaming controls and configurable high-refresh-rate modes are your priority. Consider the Galaxy S26 Ultra or iPhone 17 Pro Max if you want a mainstream flagship that also plays games, or the Galaxy Z Fold 7 if its larger screen is the draw. The available sources do not support a universal performance ranking among them; compare current local specifications and independent testing for the games you play.
